Games with good stories (excluding visual novels and walking sims)

Quantum Break.
One of the rare time-travelling story that actually works (in a way). All the characters have different motivations based on their knowledge of the situation, and they're all understandable from their own point of view. The exploration/action gameplay is actually good (need to read all the documents hidden here and there to grasp the different sub-plots), and even the attached TV-show/cutscenes are enjoyable.

I've watched longplay videos of 13 sentinels. Characters talk too much, it was like visual novel, as you said. How is the gameplay, though? Would you recommend trying it for the story or the gameplay?
Yes, the game is essentially walking and talking, as the dev described it as "stage plays". However imo there is no padding whatsoever, every conversation every line will make sense at the end and I was nonstop yelling "holy fuck".

Definitely go for it for the story, if you are into Japanese anime Si-Fi theme.

That said, I think the combat is great, it's in the tactic turn-based form, it's very fun and satisfying.

I played Silent Hill 2(Og) recently and it was awesome. I've played many great games with good stories, so it's likely that a game I've played before will be recommended in here. It doesn't have to be a suggestion tailored specifically for me; others can also benefit from the recommendations. I also enjoy reading another compliment about a game I love.
First, you must realize that SH2 is an impossibly high standard to follow up on. It's an unrivaled masterpiece. You'll have no choice but to lower your standard somewhat.

I'd say play the metal gear solid series if you haven't yet (through the collection or other means).

Edit: Cyberpunk is an excellent recommendation too!

Bloodborne, but it will take a proactive mindset to fully unravel the mysteries

Mmm, it isn’t easy to think of games with a truly good story, especially in recent times. Story wise, I’ve always been engaged by the Uncharted and TLOU games.

I’ve just finished The Witcher 3 for the 2nd time, and it has a great overall story, made up of many smaller brilliant stories, so this would be my pick of choice.

I do prefer stories that are grounded in realism, even if they happen to be part of a fantasy, like TW3.

Disco Elysium is another with a compelling story, though I’m happy to admit that some of the concepts went right over my head.

Cyberpunk is engaging story-wise, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Persona 5 also has an engaging story, though you’ll need the patience of a saint to see it through.

A couple of walking sims stayed with me, including Edith Finch and Everybody’s gone to the Rapture.

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy games from 6 until 10
The whole Ace Attorney series, better if played in order (the two ones in old times are spinoffs, but both are excellent)
Same for the Layton series (third game prob. pinnacle)

Bloody Baron from Witcher 3 has been discussed to death, but that was the last time I was actually impressed by writing in a game.
The Baron was a wife beating drunk, but he seemed genuinely aggrieved by his actions and wanted to set things right. The story was well told and had tons of cool shit like the tree thing and the crones and the decisions you make actually affect the outcome in some surprising ways.
I tried to help the bastard on my first playthrough and managed to save his wife. When I found him swinging from a tree back at his hold I was actually surprised. Then I heard there was a way to end it with him alive and the family reconciling and I was even more surprised.
The whole thing was bolstered by some stellar voice acting from the main players. Guy that voiced the Baron was brilliant.

you forgot to mention that the game is about moving boxes for 8 hours.
At least the first one. Never played the 2nd one.
Legacy of kain Defiance is more like a video game with varied gameplay
2nd one isn't that bad. Give it a shot, the story is better in this one than the first.

There really aren't many games with genuinely good writing or stories if you've read some books and seen some decent films. Disco Elysium is probably the best I can think of fairly recently. Maybe Pentiment also. I've always had a soft spot for Snatcher, Kojima's best game. Deus Ex Machina on the 48k Spectrum too. To everyone saying last of us, not only does the OP say no walking sims but it's really not particularly good, unless you think The Walking Dead or Will Smith's I Am Legend are also good. In which case I'm so sorry for you.
