The thing is gaming industry created a stereotype ( ra ra ra im a woman I can do everything better, look at me, this gameplay is garbage but look this is a WAman at the helm BUY or your a racist woman hater). Anytime someone from the alphabet mafia is involved, its been most of the time a disaster. Games are expansive. People dont want to keep spending all this money and keep getting burned.
Now, as far as Ghost the trailer was cool. I'm a big fan of Ghost. I've played plenty of great games with female protags. But I don't think that gamers reaction of being on the fence is un warranted.
I really hope the game turn out great. I loved the Jin, and I hope I can get to love her character as well.

Pretty much this.

Instead of celebrating a pretty awesome trailer and (most likely) an amazing game that we'll get to play soon, a bunch of people here are complaining about things that may very well not be true at all.

As the old saying goes, "a fly always picks the dirtiest spot."
If Tetris came out as a new game today one side would declare the devs bigots for not enough shape representation, and the other side would complain about DEI because the janitor at the company is trans.

Of course they didn't get a Japanese woman for the role. So predictable.

Yes, she has a Japanese name and, no, that doesn't maker her Japanese. She was born and raised in the USA (California). Just a quick scroll of her insta page and you can see she is about as opposite from a typical Japanese woman as you can get.

You mean like the actor who played Jin Sakai in GoT1? Born in Kuwait and is an American citizen?

Not Japan but if you want to see an awesome ancient Asia war epic, watch the Chinese version of Red Cliff. John Woo film from 2008.

Vicki Zhao is a freaking cutie pie and plays an awesome female warrior.

That's the thing with woke stuff. They can't write good characters, or stories. It's legit trash that tries to get by on production value alone.

I think people are just tired of girl bosses in games
Yeah I’m definitely tired of it. And the Mulan thing where it could’ve been a male character with a headswap is boring. There is always the possibility to pack in some nice curves but they always avoid it. Boring. Sometimes modders fix it on PC but it’s not always possible.

The wolf here is nice though. Not the most unique idea perhaps but someone said earlier that it reminded them of Shadow Dancer and that’s a cool thought, I like that, just needs a white ninja gi.

Exactly. Though, at least Daisuke Tsuji spent part of his youth growing up in Japan. Culture in Japan and the USA is so incredibly different, I'd much rather have a Japanese actor mo-capped, though I concede there is an issue finding English speaking Japanese actors. This is why Ken Watanabe is in every American movie that requires a Japanese person.

I think this game has the potential to be as good as the first one or even better .. honestly...if they avoid the woke storytelling virus....but at the same time I could take a long break from girl boss leads in heavy action packed games ..

Yeah but a movie is different from a game. You can just scan the actor similar to what they did with Horizon. Someone else can do the mocap then find a separate voice actor.

I will say though that there is also the process done by Santa Monica where the mocap and voice is done by a single person but the model is completely made up. Same thing with DMC where voice and mocap is done by the same guy but the model is made up or based on a different person.

The point is in games, you are not constrained to have the same person do the voice, mocap and model. If there are issues regarding her voice acting or mocap, it is easily replaceable by other people with no one the wiser unless you go look up the credits.

If she does a terrible job, I'll be first in line complaining about it. I just can't find the reason to with what little we got with the trailer.

Sounds just like the actor that played Jin who was raised in Sacremento from the age of 8, who is also an American citizen.

I’m going to be blunt here, I’m a simple man, unless there is some eye candy I always prefer to play as a male character.
Me too. But certain games like Alien Isolation per ex. are perfect fine with some regular female lead as it was.. theres certain games, genres and storys the are a perfect fit for female leads.. as always is all about balance.. this balance has long been lost and thats what some people in this thread seems to not get... all they can see is "muh female bad.. derp"

And of course the problem is that the current female characters are written as basicaly man and more often then not also animated like one. I couldn't thurst a modern western game writer to write a good normal believable femine female character right now to save his life.

Did I say it's in the trailer? It's all over social media and apparently they consider it a selling point for the game that this nasty b*tch is starring in it. Why don't you just carry on passively-aggressively posting laughing emojis under every post you disagree with.

Where is the idiot said that this game is not woke infested, oh well will get it on sale in a few years later. Fuck you sony.

Clearly I'm out of the loop. I just see a video of her pulling out a sword.

Female protagonists in video game always exists, like foverer. Since Samus Aran to RE games, etc. This is not the issue at all imo. The thing is, video game is being using like a tool to spread propaganda and political agenda that they call "modern". Why? Because video games become so popular that this "tool" is another "effective" tool to use for that matter. But just like movies and books, you still free to choose your destiny, what to consume, after all, for now lol

It's as clear as water, clear as some Illuminati ritual bullshit 🤡

How do they not see this and noped out.
That's not a normal person.
I like to give the benefit of the doubt, but I ain't buying until I know it's free of clown world crap.
And if it is I ain't buying it, like everyone keeps saying "you don't have to buy it"
But unlike Sony and their Studios

It's because those at the studio support it. Be prepared for some serious bullshit in this game, a lot has changed in the developer world since the original GoT was announced in 2017.

All she did was swing a sword, what so weird about that.

I'm honestly afraid of a potential Uncharted reboot...

Mind you, I never minded Tomb Raider having a female lead.

I also would never want to see Tomb Raider with a male lead (that's why we have Uncharted/Nathan Drake, right?).

Ya know. I actually like it’s not Jin. Don’t get me wrong. He is a great character, but his story… a devolution from samurai into the ghost, was told and closed.

But that’s the thing. That’s really a compelling story.

Can Sucker Punch deliver the same kind of depth and development to a female protagonist? So far, they have shown the talent to do so.

The concern is that a lot of other “modern” media hasn’t developed their female leads and they are just conduits for a political agenda (instead of just kick ass awesome characters).

Give a complex and interesting story arc with a layered protagonist, then we got a winner of a game.

Spot on. Behaviour, animations, often clothes, even looks in some cases, are made as if it’s an average man these days in the west. And of course no hips butt or breasts to speak of because that’s so very shameful.
But then what’s the point? If they actually want to make a man then why not just let us play as a Nathan or Arthur or Jin then? Is it such an interesting concept to make a tomboy Mulan type of character now that everyone has to do it? As someone said we’re in a female version of bald space marine era right now.

I think an older Jin, now a father having to deal with a rebellious, willful son of his own, would be a good narrative flip of the first game. The themes of honor, duty, lineage, and family could still play out.

Plus you could still have some characters, like the sake merchant, show up. Seems odd they would go so far ahead. I wonder if setting it in 1600 they have yasuke in it themselves.

While that ship has passed, what Sucker Punch could do now is have Jin Sakai's story as one of the Mythical Tales that Atsu encounters, ideally with an unlockable skill like the Ghost Stance.

That'd be SOOOO cool!

Nothing wrong with main character being a girl

There IS something wrong with the voice actress and all her pronouns. She's 10000% mentally ill and needs help.

Hopefully it doesn't carry over to the game her bull shit.

I mean 'she' (going by the body structure) already said that she identify as any gender randomly. so, she might identify as a dude in the game too! I mean we can ask her what gender she was identifying when she was working in the studio.

some of you are fucked. games looks great and female protagonists have been a common thing in games for decades.
Most modern day "AAA" titles seem to feature a female protagonist as opposed to a male. Even Concord, a MP title, has mostly female characters.

Star Wars Outlaws
Horizon
The Last of Us 2
Returnal
Ghost of Yotei
Ratchet and Clank (you spend half of the game playing as Rivet)
Spiderman 1/2 (pointless sections with MJ).
Stellar Blade

I don't mind Horizon/Returnal having female leads. Ditto with Stellar Blade or Outlaws. They're original IPs.

I'd be much more annoyed if my favourite male characters were gender swapped in games like a God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Doom Eternal etc.

Nevertheless it seems like female protagonists dwarf male protagonists in most modern day titles.

Ultimately I simply prefer to play games with male characters. I prefer boring one dimensional males as my protagonists.
