Great games ruined by forced play of side character

Dmc5 comes to mind. The summon guy so bad I can't even remember his name. Fortunately it wasn't overkill.

Now I'm currently playing god of war Ragnarok and oh boy.
Not only did they take the worse thing from the first game the annoying brat but now forced you to play as him.
The first section wasn't overly long.

But the second time, I kept thinking when's it going to end and it's 3 hours long. What were they smoking? This game went from great to nearly awful for me. I have no desire to play as this whiny little brat who's boring and just not fun to play as.
Looking at his skill tree I suspect I will have to play as him two more times.

Devs never learn.

I realllllly don't understand the insistence so many devs have on doing this. Like just give us a cutscene (we can skip) if you want to show us a story form some side-character's perspective, because I don't know why anyone would enjoy a game grinding to a halt so you can do some really under-developed side character gameplay. Like you build all these gameplay systems for the main character and then ditch them so we can do some lame sequence with another character.

In the case of Ragnarok it's more developed than say.., playing as Mary Jane in Spider-man.. but still.. why do I want a 2nd skill tree? Why put that dev effort in when you could just have a more interesting skill tree for the main character, the one I spend most of my time with?

I struggle with wanting to play Witcher 3 again because of the Ciri sequence.

Yeah Atreus sections in Ragnarok were probably the worst parts of the entire game for me. I had other complaints but they’re more regarding the takes on characters rather than the actual gameplay. The Atreus sections flat out sucked, drug the pacing to a grinding halt, and were just plain not fun.

I’d add the MJ parts from Insomniac’s first Spiderman game to the list as well. Never played the 2nd but in the first they were boring and entirely unnecessary. Not a game ruining experience like the Atreus parts in Ragnarok but still not that great at all. I play Spiderman to play as Spiderman, not sneak around as Mary Jane.

Spider-Man 2's insistence on having you play as Mary Jane with her supergun is one big reason that made me skip the whole game. If they really want to have her as playable character then do it in a Mary Jane game. Mary Jane: Redheaded Redemption. I couldn't care less about controlling anything other than Spider-Man in a Spider-Man game. Just as I don't have any interest in riding a horse in a Gran Turismo game.

The first thing that popped into my head was the Shinobu sections of No More Heroes 2.

I didn’t mind the character, but I recall the controls and platforming being extremely janky. Thankfully the segments are short, but the game would’ve been better without them.

Solid Snake wasn't in MGS 3 and 5. The name of the game is meaningless in this context.

He is the main character of the Metal Gear Solid Series. Raiden was a side character.

Remember being so excited to play full game after playing the demo only to be handed over to Raiden. It was a shit move by Kojima.

Reverse groomer.
Different strokes for different folks. V was fun character to play.
Nero, on the other hand (pun intended)... yeah, that cripple sucks.
Nero was cool, but V can just be spammed thru... when you seperate the bulk of the combat from the character, it just makes it easy to sit back & spam Y and X while the 2 animals do all the work

Nero was never cool. He occupies a special hell just above Donte and Verdick.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
Never had an issue with this. I feel like its some big ass cry baby shit to complain about this stuff.

If a game is great then a game is great, I dont care if the side character gets some time to shine.

Even in SpiderMan 2, its just a couple missions.

In Daytona USA n Saturn you could unlock a horse mode. Shit was hilarious 😆

Here it is for anyone curious:

Plays with kids toys, in the adult gaming world
I hate Dante and think he's a try-hard poochy type character. Nero is what got me into DMC

To answer the question....Shadow ruins whatever Sonic game he's in

Wrong.

Metal Gear Solid.

Solid Snake is the main character. We were given a side character in MGS2 which was a massive disappointment after playing the Demo/Opening.

Solid Snake is the main character of the franchise…Raiden is a side character, end of discussion

You don't play as zelda, either.

C'mon you guys have had a long time to process this lol. Snake was the side character and you played the prologue with him.

Its hilarious that after 24 years, people still don't get the point of the MGS2 Snake/Raiden swap.

Anyway, been playing FF7 Rebirth on PC and i still haven't changed my mind about that Cait Shit section in Shinra Manor. Fucking terrible section of an otherwise great game.

Couldn't care less what the point was. No one wanted to play as Raiden especially after MGS1 and the hype created after playing the Demo/Opening.

I literally bought a game to play that demo. Had no interest in Zone of the Enders.

It was to show snake from a different perspective. That’s well known, but it doesn’t make Raiden any less worse as a character.
