its not about vram or anything, game runs bad on maxwell architectureHow much vram does the game try to use at your settings? My guess is too much. I had a 970.. it's the card famous for having 3.5 GB of usable vram... and I've noticed in the games I play that the usage in modern titles can be quite high.
with 471.11 (specifically) game runs a bit better
it has nothing to do with these GPUs being old, a 970 when properly supported, can go head to head with a series s (no joke). a 970 still performs close to a 1060 in most of games (new or old), and 1060 is just a bit behind 1650super, which is exactly where series s sits at
970 being old has nothing to do with its performance in this game;
its just a matter of developer support;
then again, its extra burden for devs to accomodate for endless architectures that nvidia is pushing out every 2 years. not every dev has the resources/time to cover all bases. as you can see, Gotg developers clearly have phased out maxwell in their minds, cemented by the fact that they suggest a 1060 as a minimum whereas Forza horizon lists a Kepler GPU as a minimum and surprisingly, my friend's 750ti can run it at 1080p/30 FPS
now, its widely known that forza 5 is a good optimized title, but GOTG is not that bad either. Pascal GPUs still run it good, and Turing/Ampere is mostly having a good time
i cannot blame developers, i would say blame is on nvidia. they keep reiterating architectures since they have economical power to do so. meanwhile AMD is weaker in competition, hence they iterate existing architectures instead. even the RDNA shares tons of common points with GCN. Thanks to that core they share, all PS4/Xbox One games run seamlessly on nextgen gen consoles. None of this would be possible with the mindset that Nvidia has.
and lastly, it might be caused by a driver bug as well but it went under the radar sadly
so,
