If AI could produce amazing games, which cultural values would be most popular in those games?

With the discussion of female protagonists and DEI stuff in general, I came up with this thought experiment: if AIs could produce amazing games (I doubt this could happen though without massive human input) what cultural values would be the most popular in the games? To make this more concrete think of RPG games.

Would the land of straight ethnically homogenous be the most popular, or would it sprinkled different faces and LGBT people? Would it have male leads, female leads or "other" leads? Would it show all religion as bad, some religions as bad or all religion as good?

My thinking here is that games currently are a package deal and showing a particular game is popular doesn't tell us what the highest preferences of gamers are. For instance, you could currently have a situation (I'm not saying this is the situation) of the tyranny of the minority (Nasim Taleb's term) whereby a market niche has a strong preference for one thing (say LGBT stuff) so it is put into games to get them to buy it knowing that most gamers don't like it but it doesn't bother them enough to stop them buying the game.

With AI each game would be bespoke to each user so we would be able to see his preferences most clearly without distortion from the minority or the majority.

Edit - the point is not whether AI could do this, I am highly doubtful it ever could. My main question is the genuine preferences of gamers, the AI part is just a way to think about a bespoke game created 100% around your tastes and preferences.

Ah, yes, the classic “thought experiment” where the only variable is you inputting your biases into an AI and then waiting for the algorithm to spit them back at you, validating your assumptions. Truly groundbreaking stuff
But I'm not interested in my preferences, but rather what preferences most gamers have.

Same as any other pop culture I assume 🤷‍♂️ Look at popular music artists and celebrities for looks. Look at popular movies and books for stories.
But it’s always possible to feed AI with an agenda and then it’ll be like now.

AI, is just a glorified autocomplete query based engine. Based on what we seen for AAA titles which is what it will pull it's data from. Expect woke stuff coming out of it, heck, I would think it will actually recreate DA: Veilguard just because it got the most feedback followed by AC:Shadows.

Not unless it’s pushed to do that.

Corporate AI has DEI ideas and biases built into it (see Gemini producing images of a black Hitler) and it's likely game publishers would license something from one of those big corps. We wouldn't get the likes of Dustborn because the hate there is too overt, but rather Forspokens and Unknown 9s.

AI and "amazing games" are not compatible terms.

Let's ignore the simple fact that an amazing production requires a sentient consciousness. AI doesn't have one. Will never have. AI is programmed by people and incorporates their values. The AI preachers are mostly transhumanist sickos with a fake coating of wokeness on the surface. It's the worst combo you can imagine. Not very amazing in my book.

AI will never achieve anything remotely close to what a good artist or writer can do. It's a tool aimed at killing any creativity and critical thinking, things you need to produce something good.

Plenty of beautiful and inspiring landmarks aren't man-made.
Would mount Fuji be any less culturaly significant to Japan ?

Cultural relevance has nothing to do with whomever made the thing. It's how the public at large enjoys and gets inspired by it.
I 100% expect AI-made stuff to break into pop-culture and be just as appreciated as if man-made.

So, that's just a standard description. Now add in an RPG with full questlines and we'll see what the AI will write and come up with.

Everyone in here acting like they don't have their own biases... including me... people are so ignorant of themselves at times but its good discussion. Perhaps everyone should have a version of what they perceive to be real from AI like how people view Galactus in different ways depending on who they are.

You speak of AI. I don't think you understand how these systems work.

Besides that, your point regarding the reflection of values with mass appeal in relation to the numbers a game does on the market is absolutely valid. Same goes for film, literature and all other types of mediums as well.

I can try that, copilot again:

**Name:** Lyra Stormblade

**Age:** 28

**Race:** Human

**Background:** Lyra was born in the isolated mountain kingdom of Eldoria, known for its skilled swordmasters. Raised as the daughter of a legendary warrior, she was trained in the art of the sword from an early age. Her village was once attacked by a malevolent dragon, resulting in the loss of her parents and many villagers. This event drove her to become a master swordswoman and to swear an oath to protect the innocent.

**Weapon:** A one-handed sword named "Dragonbane," forged from magical steel that can pierce dragon scales.

**Skills:**

- **Master Swordswoman:** She is one of the most skilled swordfighters in the entire kingdom.

- **Acrobatics:** Lyra is extremely agile and can perform complex acrobatic maneuvers in combat.

- **Supernatural Strength:** Thanks to a magical amulet she wears, Lyra possesses strength that surpasses many other warriors.

- **Dragon Slayer Knowledge:** Having studied dragon weaknesses for many years, she knows exactly where and how to strike.

**Personality:** Lyra is brave, determined, and loyal. She has a good heart and a strong sense of justice, but also carries a melancholy over her lost childhood and parents. She is also wise and strategic, often using her intellect as much as her strength in battle.

**Motivation:** Her main goal is to vanquish the dragon that destroyed her village and to protect others from similar fates. She is also on an inner journey to find peace and reconciliation with her past.

Absolutely! Here’s an engaging RPG plot for you:

**Title: The Dragon's Oath**

---

**Introduction:**

In the kingdom of Eldoria, a prophecy foretells the return of an ancient dragon that once wreaked havoc across the lands. The dragon, Draakonir, seeks vengeance and the complete domination of Eldoria. The only hope lies in the hands of a small band of heroes, each with their own unique skills and backgrounds.

**Main Characters:**

1. **Lyra Stormblade**: A master swordswoman with a thirst for vengeance against dragons.
2. **Thorn Ironfist**: A dwarf warrior known for his strength and resilience.
3. **Elara Moonwhisper**: An elven mage skilled in ancient arcane arts.
4. **Jax Shadowstrider**: A rogue human with a knack for stealth and lockpicking.
5. **Sarina Swiftwind**: A nimble archer with unparalleled accuracy.

**Plot:**

**Act 1: The Prophecy Unveiled**

The heroes discover an ancient scroll hidden in the ruins of an old temple. The scroll reveals a prophecy about the return of Draakonir and a powerful artifact, the Dragon’s Oath, which can bind the dragon and save the kingdom. The artifact is scattered across the land, and only by reuniting its pieces can the heroes hope to succeed.

**Act 2: The Gathering Storm**

The heroes embark on a perilous journey to gather the pieces of the Dragon’s Oath. Along the way, they face various challenges:
- **The Forbidden Forest**: Filled with magical creatures and ancient traps.
- **The Cursed Cavern**: Home to a powerful lich who guards one piece of the artifact.
- **The Floating Isles**: Enchanted islands in the sky, accessible only by deciphering ancient runes.

**Act 3: Betrayal and Revelation**

As they gather the pieces, the heroes uncover a dark secret: one of them is destined to betray the group, compelled by an ancient curse. Trust is tested, and they must overcome internal strife to stay united. They eventually identify and confront the traitor, who redeems themselves by making a great sacrifice.

**Act 4: The Final Confrontation**

With the Dragon’s Oath reassembled, the heroes travel to the Dragon’s Lair, a massive, volcanic fortress. They face Draakonir in an epic battle, combining their unique skills to weaken the dragon and bind it using the artifact. Just as victory seems certain, Draakonir reveals a hidden power, and the heroes must make a final, desperate stand.

**Epilogue:**

The heroes emerge victorious, but not without losses. They return to Eldoria as legends, their names etched into history. Lyra, having avenged her past, finds a new purpose in training the next generation of warriors. Peace returns to Eldoria, but the shadow of the prophecy lingers, hinting at future adventures.

Seems okay

Let’s add romancing:
Absolutely! Here’s a romantic scenario involving our fantasy character, Lyra Stormblade:

---

**Title: A Moonlit Encounter**

**Setting: The Enchanted Forest**

**Plot:**

The night was serene, with a silver moon casting a gentle glow over the Enchanted Forest. Lyra Stormblade, weary from her recent battles, sought solace under the ancient trees. The forest was alive with the sounds of nature—whispering leaves, chirping crickets, and the distant hoot of an owl. She settled by a crystal-clear stream, its waters shimmering in the moonlight, and began to unbuckle her armor, seeking the cool comfort of the night air.

As she dipped her hand into the stream, a rustle in the bushes nearby caught her attention. Instinctively, her hand moved to the hilt of her sword, but she relaxed as a familiar figure emerged from the shadows. It was Elara Moonwhisper, the elven mage who had been her companion on many adventures.

“Lyra,” Elara’s voice was soft and melodic, “I thought I might find you here.”

Lyra smiled, her tired eyes lighting up at the sight of her friend. “Elara, what brings you to this part of the forest?”

“I could ask you the same,” Elara replied with a playful glint in her eye. She stepped closer, the moonlight dancing on her silver hair. “I came to ensure my favorite warrior was safe. And to enjoy the beauty of the night.”

The two women sat by the stream, their conversation flowing as naturally as the water beside them. They spoke of past battles, dreams for the future, and the bond that had grown between them over time. Elara’s presence was a soothing balm for Lyra’s weary soul.

As the night deepened, Elara produced a small, intricately carved flute. “May I play something for you?” she asked.

Lyra nodded, her heart swelling with affection. “I would love that.”

Elara’s fingers danced over the flute, filling the air with a hauntingly beautiful melody. The music wove its way through the trees, echoing the deep connection between the two women. Lyra closed her eyes, letting the melody wash over her, feeling an inexplicable warmth bloom in her chest.

When the music ceased, Elara reached out and gently took Lyra’s hand. “Lyra, I have something to confess,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “These past months, I’ve come to realize that my feelings for you go beyond friendship. You are more to me than just a comrade-in-arms.”

Lyra’s heart skipped a beat, her eyes locking with Elara’s. “Elara, I... I feel the same way. I’ve been afraid to say it, fearing it might change what we have.”

A tender smile spread across Elara’s lips. “Change can be beautiful, Lyra. Just as the seasons change, so do our hearts.”

Under the moonlit sky, surrounded by the magic of the Enchanted Forest, Lyra and Elara shared their first kiss. It was a moment of pure, unspoken love—a promise of many more nights like this, where battles and hardships could fade into the background, leaving only the bond they shared.

“Lyra,” Thorn’s voice was gruff yet warm, “I thought I might find you here.”

Lyra smiled, her tired eyes lighting up at the sight of her friend. “Thorn, what brings you to this part of the forest?”

“I could ask you the same,” Thorn replied with a playful glint in his eye. He stepped closer, the moonlight reflecting off his sturdy armor. “I came to ensure my favorite warrior was safe. And to enjoy the beauty of the night.”

I tried to ask why it went with a lesbian romance scenario first and it gave some answer about how diversity can enrichen the story or something like that blah blah blah.

So yeah, you had a point there. But designs at least seem to be what a global audience would think look good.

Tried to get copilot to spit out 2D versions, and poses for side scrolling animations and got some hilarious results. Seems like it has no clue of it’s previous posts. Asked for a walk animation, first there was this cool asian chick…

Asked for an attack animation, then it’s this ninja-like lady

Said that it wasn’t the same girl, asked for another attempt

Fully AI produced games will be a bumpy ride I think 😂🤣😂

Yep. Its biases would just be what's publicly available on the web. That's why you usually get supermodel shots when asking for a picture of a woman or man. Add to that the filters people use to post their pics there and its biases aren't going to match reality very well. It will have those biases already.

Depends on who developed the AI and what they trained it on.
If we ever get AI that's good enough to make games it's probably going to come from some big tech company and it's probably going to be programmed with the same preferences and biases that are common in them (flashback to the black and asian nazi soldiers from that Google AI image creator).

Even assuming the creators really want the AI to be unbiased, it's going to depend on what you train it on.
Let's assume you train it only on games (no social media or the larger internet). If you just give it an outside look at them it will probably still focus on adding a lot of DEI and diversity because it's a common theme in gaming right now (at least in western games). Though if you truly wanted it to make something that appeals to the cultural values of people playing games it would need access to their internal telemetry to see what types of characters people are creating, what types of characters they are interacting with the most, what choices they are making etc

I think it would be most amazing when put into an RPG.

Your actions (and those of the NPCs) would actually have a noticeable impact on the world and its events. Even doing something utterly trivial, such as stealing an apple, could have world changing consequences.

No one would experience the same game as anyone else.

It would be generally positive toward mass data collection and government+corporate surveillance. "If you're not doing anything wrong, you've got nothing to hide" is the dominant cultural mode of AI world.
