Its not the muscles, its the lack of feminine features (waist and shoulders) combined with the bulkyness that sticks out
If you knew nothing of the game you would be inclined to think last pic is a man.

She actually doesn't look that huge in other shots. It's weird. Like here:

Her arms are thin. But maybe she started to lift like mad after her gf died 🤔

Ellie looks pretty alright, now if she had no neck, was jacked as a train, had a partially shaved head and partially tinted hair...yeah, maybe then i would think that the opinion of "Ellie looks too much like a man" or "LESBIAN, RUN" is a sensible or understandable one.

Also, that scene in the OP, it's obviously intended too show Ellie's man like features, AKA how tough she has become.
Edit: Ellie has always being the Tomboy type too, how can her looks here be any surprise to anyone.
God the protagonist from Gears 5 is so fucking ugly and poorly designed she looks like a complete joke. If you showed me a character like that in a vacuum I'd say it's from a knockoff bootleg MOBA or something. Look how far apart her eyes are, you could fit an entire fist between them

I had to replay twice to make sure who in this shot was. I seriously hope there is a backstory to how she managed to get those side delts, traps like Bane and a solid upper back. I don't think its naturally possible for a female to achieve this much muscle density at all. Look at Olympia fitness competitors, even they are not this dense and defined. This is post apocalypse universe . Unless, im missing something, i was absolutely dumbfounded by this design choice.

I mean look at this:

azE1wQh.jpg

Looks like she has been hitting those chin up bars and dumbbells more than she's been playing guitar.
Do you even lift?

I don't completely agree OP. But your post has some merit. Her back looks like a somewhat slim male. She does have a bit more masculine structure than most females, but its definitely achievable for a girl without drugs.

What's more odd is, what is she eating and doing on a regular basis to maintain any sort of muscular structure in a post apocalyptic world? Just the stress alone will waste people to nothing sometimes.

But for people saying it isn't achievable in our world naturally, you're fucking crazy, that or you have terrible genetics for muscularity and you're projecting your "everyone is on steroids" nonsense to make yourself feel better. I have a younger brother that everyone accuses of doing steriods, the guy drinks heavily, smokes, eats shit food and never works out. Still has abs and thick muscle bellies. Imagine if he gave a single fuck? He doesn't, but some people are just blessed.

Realism is one of those subtle details that make a game that much better.

But, if that’s the case, why not have a normal looking, toned Ellie?

I wouldn't be against that idea. I don't care either way. From my perspective it's just a minor inconsequential detail. You could go either way.

You need food to build mass. She is clearly well fed if this is natty.

maybe she’s eating people? Lol. Tho there were some giraffes in the first game. I’m sure there is some food still available but not like a diet we are used to.

Under the situation, we are talking about folks eating organic as they have to live off of the land and having to fight to survive on a daily basis, so its as cave man diet as you can get, so it wouldn't surprise me folks are fit. In fact, people get unfit when they have more technology as it makes us use to siting and having automation do things man used to do. So I think this thread is just an exaggeration seeking to find something that isn't there. Yes....women can be this fit, not everything is conspiracy folks.

I don’t see the issue

I think humans were much more muscular and fitter in most of their history compared to now. Steroids or not.

Ellie is still somewhat attractive but holy shit her partner Dina is so off-putting you really want her to be only in the prologue.
Wasn't her real life model not as nosy and had big tits? I think?

OP did you not get the memo. A 'badass' 'strong' woman in modern feminist representation has to look and act like a man. This is totally unsurprising.

Sorry but this comment just reflects that gaf is turning into the antiERA (always looking for shit to bitch about ) she is still Ellie except older and I have seen plenty of fit girls who have that kind of body.

I am really wondering how many in here have actually been with a woman because some of you clearly seem to have some strange ideas about women.

Perhaps The Coalition didn't hire enough ND designers.

Absolutely haram.

She's cute, flaws and all. She looks way better in person than what ND managed to capture.

In Uncharted Lost Legacy both girls had a very masculine and too muscular body, and male characters were either dumb or bad guys. The game had a certain girls power! sjw vibe/flair that basically killed my hype and became my least favorite Uncharted game just because of that.

In some weird way made me disconnect from the game and felt the game was for someone else. Something weird because that never happened to me with many other games with female protagonist or sjw vibe that I played.

In this case, they made Ellie a bit more masculine, but for me she looks good. She looks a bit muscular and has wounds and scars because of the rough life fighting against monsters and thugs while surviving in a difficult environment with limited resources, but still looks like a woman. She doesn't have "male" shoulders as happened in Lost Legacy, and doesn't look like too muscular to me.

Silly childish insults. If you disagree with my point then state the reasons why and back it up. That's the difference between here and Era, we can have differing opinions and civil discourse about it.

It's a post-apocalyptic scenario. She is eating, obviously, but she would need loads and loads of protein to get that bulky. Is she going for the Greta special? Because carbs are not gonna do. Training under a starving population scenario would be incredibly stupid as you never know when your next meal is going to be. Plus, she's always on the move and she's fighting men with weapons, not barehanded. To get that bulky she'd have to throw men around for months, and she'd get four or five herniated disks before she even got in that shape.
I guess they bought into the whole "when someone says "badass, realistic" to compliment a western woman in a videogame, they mean "she's built like a man and sometimes looks like a man too".

Seems like people scream SJW propaganda whenever there's a female lead or a gay character in a video game.

I grew up in a different era, I guess.

I thought it was cool to see female lead characters such as Ripley from Aliens, Chun-Li, Samus Aron, Lara Croft, Beatrix Kiddo (Ok, this happened when I was much older, but she's still a cool character).

I don't even think X-Men would exist!

Crazy.

People would cry that it's getting too much into politics.

Now I understand when things feel forced.

Two Examples:

Batwoman - Just about every single trailer was forcing the narrative, which made it a complete cringe fest.

SuperGirl - She's a superhero, but they still wanted to stick the "is it because she's a woman" crap just to force a similar narrative. I only saw a few episodes, but that point just stood out and it was forced.

Now back to The Last of Us.

I know Naughty Dog wants to crate strong female characters, but it's not always about being some SJW propaganda.

Sometimes people just want a character to fit their personality.

Example:
TheLastofUsPartII_PGW_08.0.jpg

Yes, a masculine woman.

But do I consider his SJW crap?

No.

I think i reflects her personality - IF this is Ellie's mother.

Anna's letter to Ellie.

Ellie,

I'm going to share a secret with you, I'm not a big fan of kids and I hate babies. And yet... I'm staring at you and I'm just awestruck.

You're not even a day old and holding you is the most incredible thing I've done in my life - a life that is about to get cut a little short.

Marlene will look after you. There's no one in this world I trust more than her. When the time comes she'll tell you all about me. Don't give her too much of a hard time. Try not to be as stubborn as me.

I'm not going to lie, this is a pretty messed up world. It won't be easy. The thing you always have to remember is that,

Side one of the note ends here.

life is worth living! Find your purpose and fight for it.

I see so much strength in you. I know you'll turn out to be the woman you're meant to be.

Forever... your loving mother

Anna

Make me proud, Ellie!

From fandom page.
Anna described herself as being stubborn, tending to give people a hard time, and not liking children, especially infants. Despite that, her letter showed how she loved and valued Ellie in the short time they spent together. Additionally, Anna also states in her letter to Ellie that she knew she was going to die, but knew that Ellie would grow strong and make her proud.
My conclusion,

I write as a hobby and I tend to create character's look to fit their personality and that's what I believe ND is doing here.

I don't think its to show they can create a strong female character, I believe she's a reflection of her stubborn personality. If she gives people a hard time, then I can only see her having somewhat of an intimidating presence.

This of course is a reflection of Ellie's personality too, because she's also a bit stubborn and has a really bad mouth.

All of these characters are still very much feminine women compared to Ellu.

I dunno. She looks fine to me. I don't really get the whole "they're turning all the women in muh games into guys" thing everyone has gotten so hung up about recently, though.

I mean, I get it in cases like ME Andromeda or Control, where their faces looked weirdly deformed and nothing like the model they were supposedly based on. But this? I'd still consider Ellie to be pretty attractive, for what it's worth. But then again, I also have a thing for women that are a bit more on the tomboyish/more masculine side, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Still won't buy the game though. Neil Druckman can fuck off :messenger_winking_tongue:

Your entire post is Ellie is a butch because of her personality. Explain Chun Li then.

You're not getting the point.

A character's personality often reflects their character design.

Generally, some of the "smartest" characters in a video game or within your group will often wear glasses. It's a common character design that represents this.

Otacon - Metal Gear
Ignis - Final Fantasy 15
Nico - Devil May Cry

Characters who use their sex appeal will wear revealing\skimpy clothing and flaunt it.

Bayonetta
Excella - Resident Evil 5
Mileena - Mortal Kombat
Anna - Tekken

What about Ellie?

Ellie is not what you may consider as the "feminine" character.

The way she talks throughout the first game was obvious.

She's considered the "Tomboy."

You see many women like this in everyday life. There are women who are not comfortable wearing skirts and heels all the time, they just like to wear jeans and sneakers.

This makes it clear where Ellie's personality is going and how it will reflect in her design.

Ellie is a fighter who is trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Knowing this simple fact, you're not going to see many typical "feminine" characters, you're going to see many characters with a tough personality because you need one in this world.

So Ellie is going to show a tough personality due to her growing up in the world.

That's not SJW propaganda, that's simple character design.
