You're not just walking Aerith home from a church, you're acting as a bodyguard to a beautiful young girl (a stranger to you) who is being pursued by a mad scientist. The juxtaposition between Clouds cold demeanour and her warmth is interesting. The dialogue and acting are some of the best of last gen.
The materia system and gameplay are also a godsend.
That last part I cannot get behind. The gameplay/combat system is extremely messy imho. It's a hybrid that doesn't do action nor turn-based well.
I don't necessarily hate it, and there's worse out there, but having no decent aggro system and constant pausing, changing characters, using shortcuts that you constantly rebind again, ugh.
Not to mention the materia system being convoluted as fuck due to weapon switching for unlockable skills but not having the same amount of slots.
I'm sorry but, nope. For me, the gameplay in FF7Remake is a 7 out of 10, at best.

I see your point of view, although I like the combat, but yeah it has some messy parts.
I really like how materia works, in the sense that it level up as you use it, I adore when a game does this, that's such a natural way of evolving and growing a skill, instead of just giving xp to everything you have or you chose a skill to invest it in even if you don't use it.
What I don't like is something you pointed with the rebinds and pausing. The roll is a bit weird, I have trouble using it and all the other ways of parry and dodge as materia are wrong for me. IMO, any kind of dodge, dash, parry etc. stuff in games should be a single button, and here is a bit uncomfortable and it uses a quick slot, which are just a few.
Another thing, the limited quick slots and the constant rebinds if you want to use the shortcuts, especially if you play on hard, where you also constantly change materia, as you have to grind. The game not having more than one set of builds, where you change materia, equipment, it's tiring and an oversight.
Don't know if some of these are different in Rebirth as I've yet to play it, but for me, if it is or in the final part it would be amazing.
I'm getting closer to the end part of Rebirth and the game for the most part have been a agony for me.
I like the gameplay, but the game is bloated with crappy mini games that feel like mobile games. Every new character I absolutely hate and most of the open world/roaming music is giving me a headache.
OG FF7 is my all time favorite game, so the fact that I despise Rebirth is soul crushing. Well, I can always go back to the original game.

Sucks to hear. The original can be modded to an amazing degree right now - with 4K A.I. upscaled visuals, 60 fps in combat and traversal, non-chibi character models, fully voiced characters, updated music, etc. Perhaps you'll get your kicks there.
Trying to finish Remake so I can start Rebirth but things aren’t going well. Stuck at chapter 18 final (end game?) boss Sepiroth. Quit for the day and didn’t realize there was nothing saved after the road portal, just a temporary checkpoint.
How can they not have a save point between two long multi segment boss areas? Am I supposed to just leave the PC on day and night until I manage to beat the fucker or what??

I'm in Junon area and I understand your point, so far I'm not liking Rebirth more than Remake, it has parts that are much better, like combat, but it drags in bloat and that Ubi style open world.
This happens when you want to make 3 games out of one, I think they should have made just 1 game, hell maybe max 2 parts, that way, the bloat would have been trimmed a bit.
I didn't play OG FFVII, not because I didn't like it, different reasons, but I know the story, I'm curious how do you feel about the story/changes in Remake and Rebirth?

I recently finished Remake (2 days ago) and found it serviceable. It has a lot of padding and you can tell the development team knew they were in over their heads and decided to cut the game into parts.
I started Rebirth as soon as I hit the credits of Intergrade, and immediately you can notice it is by far a much better game.

I think they wanted something epic, but there are some parts there that are complete BS, just counter him with punisher mode.
For the most part I hate the changes that they made to the story, but I'm still okay with that 'cause I understand that the developers wanted some meat on the bones.
But what I can't stand are the new super anime characters. Chadley and the girl version of him. I can't remember the last game in which I skipped all the extra dialog like I do in this game. Maybe I did that in some extend in Horizon Forbidden West.
Remake and Rebirth both are too happy compared to the original game.
I'm curious how you like the games since you haven't played the original? I definitely recommend you to try the PS4 version if you don't mind the old graphics.
Im playing through FF7 remake and i almost fell asleep , im 5 or 6 hours in and almost half of them are slow walking sessions and squeezing through cracks
There was a section when i was escorting aerith back home from the church , it was one of the most painful section in any game , then we go gather some flowers to take to the orphanage and while shes inside i have to walk around until shes done , fuck this
I can’t do it, have probably tried 10 times now. Bullshit boss fight for sure.
One time I got to the point where he gets wings and Barret arrives. I think there is about 30% health left at that point. The more common scenario is that I’m dead shortly after second character coming in.
Why is second character different this time btw? I had Aerith coming in after the first time but now it’s Tifa.
I found a way to handle the lack of a save point though. By playing on Steam Deck! Which has a rest mode function so I can leave it on at the Game Over screen so I don’t have to do first annoying boss area over and over at least. Was not a fun boss fight, most repetitive area in the game, just the same enemies over and over, awful.

You can make the 1st phase really easy, interrupting his spells with Disorder and Punisher mode to counter his attack, in 2nd phase you can also use Counterstance to counter his multiple attacks, just dodge when he leaps in the air or does his AOE attacks, those can't be blocked. As for which character appears, I think it's which character's skills you use the most previously in the Harbinger fight
This is mostly the tactic I used in hard mode, I guess there are others more good.

I actually tried the original after I finished Remake and despite how old it is, I was surprised how captivating it was, even the combat.
Remake I liked, the combat helps a lot, if it wasn't good I don't think I could stand the writing and some of the characters, the way they talk and what they talk, it's like sometimes they just start from the middle of the conversation and I'm standing there like "what did I miss?"
It's a bit better in Rebirth, so far, there are still some cryptic conversations and yeah, Chadley and his wife can fuck off, lol, and you know, the open world was good initially up until that first tower, then it all became meh, why have all these visual pointers for stuff, owls for wellsprings, etc., if I can just have it pop up on the map.
Even so, there is something in FFVII universe, it's unique, interesting, some characters I like, not a lot and it would be a much better game if they would tone down the quirkiness and bloat for the final one.
I never completed Remake. Is there a good video walkthrough that recounts the events and especially character backgrounds? When I try Rebirth, I want to feel like I already know these characters.

Hard to disagree with this. As much as i'm currently enjoying the game the filler really takes away from the story. Not sure why devs still think we need 70 hours of filler instead of just 20 to 30 hours of rock solid gameplay and story.
After remake I vowed to drop the entire trilogy and not even bother touching rebirth because apparently it has even more filter and tedious stuff. Remake has terrible writing, poor characters, bland world and stages. The only thing I liked was the combat. So much of the game was cringe, I think people just have fond memories of the original and it's "Final Fantasy".
Rebirth is the better game but it does have a lot of unnecessary bloat and stupid sidequests. Still, it is an incredible game and my 2024 GoTY next to Astro Bot.
