She seems kinda based and speaks common sense.

Haven't watched video as i am at work but will later. I already know who she is though and have watched her other videos.
She is non-woke and what we need more of in game dev.
I guess it's a generational thing as she is gen x, and we are way more common sense and dgaf.

As somebody who has worked in corporate America since the late 90s, I assumed most professionals within this space understood this, but social media proved me wrong time and time again.

And sadly, I believe it's only worsening with each subsequent generation.

In a world filled with anti-woke grifter beggars, seeing actual common sense being discussed against the brain rot that has taken over the industry for the past few years (brain rot that is slowly burning away, thankfully) is absolutely great.

We need more people like Laura Fryer discussing the problems in gaming, and less pedophilic gooners suing with actual prostitues just as an excuse to beg for more money.

The tl;dr of the video is to not respond to social media and let the game speak for itself.

I've said it before in another thread and will repeat here, game devs need social media training and the first lesson is the art of not posting.
I almost wonder if it's a strategy.

Internally, they know how their game is going to perform better than anyone outside the studio. If they're feeling frustration, or if they feel like they're cooking up a goose egg, then you go to social media to throw your hail mary. Quiet confidence is earned.

It's frustration, but at outside factors. Otherwise there is not much strategy to stupidity. Acting out emotionally never works on social media because too many people online are too quick to judge. Silence + Showcasing is the better combination in the creative field.

The reason certain creators have a mystique about them, like Miyamoto and Kojima, is because they don't spend their time talking to people online often, if at all.

Even taking Japan away from this equation, notice how a company like iD software does things. Marty will come out and talk about some of the cool shit they want to show people at a random Xbox showcase, then leave everyone with that small, exciting hint, and you won't hear much from him until that new Doom game nears release.

Notice how the BG3 guys were just beginning to annoy people online with the 'holier than thou' walls of text about how other businesses should be run. The moment they announced they started working on a new game, people liked that news more.

There's an ebb and flow to all of this that some devs lack.

It's not just LA devs either, as much as people want to complain about just them alone. For example, no one wants to hear from Keiji Inafune and Hideki Kamiya is also a controversial figure. People would rather just play a new game from Kamiya than see his words.

Is Avowed going to flop?

I don't think we have enough info. to say either way. Games mired in controversy pre-release (mostly thanks to that art director's vendetta against Musk) don't tend to do well. On the other hand, though, Obsidian has a long history of releasing well-received games and many people will give them the benefit of the doubt. I suppose we'll know once it releases and impressions from people who are playing start to come in.

There is a reason "killing with kindness" exists as a saying. If Hansen responded like a professional adult, the whole controversy could have been a short storm in a teacup. Instead, he decided to piss off everyone who disagrees with him politically.

Laura is correct.

Is Avowed going to flop?

It is coming out two weeks after Kingdom Come II.

Kingdom Come is currently number 21 in bestsellers on Steam.
Avowed is number 401.

Of course, with it coming to gamepass MS likely has low expectations. But I do think it is very unlikely to make its budget back, unless it ends up being some 90+ metacritic breakout megahit (unlikely).

"Show, don't tell."

A practice that should be encouraged more. It was already somewhat uncommon even several decades back. Now, it feels close to nonexistent.

That quote from Marcus Aurelius seems very apt in this situation:

How much more harmful are the consequences of anger and grief than the circumstances that aroused them in us!

A dev lashing out due to criticism just creates a negative air around a game. I think her thoughts on the better way to have handled it are spot on too.

Emergency air drop her in to save Xbox.

She is the only one who could, not that Chicken Satay Nutella cares though.

Best thing that would happen to them since the LEGEND Peter Moore.

She's kind of a big deal and her videos give a great inside view of how the sausage is made.

Not convinced.
She said that the developer could have turned the criticism into positive vibes, while highlighting that pronouns are just additional options that can be ignored by the player. I say the fact that these additional options are provided automatically permits the conclusion that story, characters and dialogue are written in a way "as if HR is in the room at any time", as IGN so eloquently put it. Which means that the entire game is fucked (since as an RPG it heavily relies on its narrative component), like Veilguard.

The only solution could have been to cleanse the development process of any DEI consulting.

But maybe I am wrong, and the game does have compelling narrative and dialogue, we'll see.

The irony of Musk being mad of pronouns in a fantasy, man it's literally where they will ever make sense, if even then.
Not really actually. It would be proper for a fantasy game if it didn’t exist in the real world.

They took wording specifically created in modern times to be used in the real world and put it into fantasy game. I don’t always agree with Musk, but he is super right on this.

Yea, but the fantasy is made up by a modern mind so idk. Maybe Tolkien would have put pronouns in LOTR if he was writing it today lol. I think nu pronouns are ridiculous and absurd nonetheless, but as we all can see, studios making games are filled by these morons.
