LTTP: Why is Guardians of the Galaxy So Underrated?

When they boot the game they think of something else, not the game itself, now that obviously did quite number on this game, or any game that cause distraction because of something else on their eyes better.

I've been playing this game all weekend, and I'm shocked at how underrated this game is - not just by average gamers, but even by official reviews, which settled on a Metacritic average of 80. I genuinely can't understand why that is. Is it because the marketing was so bad that it permanently tainted people's perception of the game? Is it because of Avengers being so bad that it permanently tainted people's perception of western SQEX games? Is it superhero fatigue? EIther way, I've just lost even more faith in the opinions of journalists to tell me what is worth playing.

After firing it up I realized within a few hours that this is a masterpiece of a game. It's basically the modern incarnation of Mass Effect 2, complete with team combat and light puzzle mechanics, Bioware-at-their-best-level dialogue, and a great story. There is zero open world bloat. No side quests. You're going to new places the entire game, and almost every location in the game so far has stood out as being unusually original and interesting visually and in terms of story. And honestly, the dialogue is probably better than Bioware's best. It's genuinely entertaining and funny almost the entire time.

It stands at the very top of the superhero genre as well. Arkham Asylum, Spider Man (90% a Batman clone with tons of polish), and now Guardians.

Graphically, it is literally one of the most impressive looking games I've seen ever. The environments remind me of the kind of polish I saw on FFXIII when it first came out. It's that good.

Will this game ever get the sort of admiration and prestige it deserves? It's literally right up there with Mass Effect 2, Spider Man, Arkham Asylum and some of the best western games I've ever played. The only downside I can think of is that the combat is pretty casual, without a ton of depth. But it's honestly still fun combat, and fits with the tone and pace of the game. It's just not difficult.

I just wonder if this game will be appreciated several years from now after we hear what the Deus Ex team moves onto next. This is pretty much the best thing western SQEX has ever made, by far.
I'm coincidentally playing through it now, people forget that the initial reaction to the reveal trailer was really, REALLY bad. Like Concord bad.

The character designs were memed on, and people assumed it was gonna be as bad as Marvel's Avengers (especially given that SE were behind that too).

I'm playing through this now (though slowly, work has been punishing for me this month), so I might chime in with thoughts as I go.

Avengers released right before and disappointed the world. Single handedly ending the Marvel era. Guardians look really similar in gameplay trailers. Everyone just assumed the worst. I barely like even the best Marvel flicks, and I thought that Guardians game was very good.

I finished it recently. The combat was average and the puzzles were very simple and boring. They could have done so much more with the puzzles considering they had a team of 5 guardians and their abilities to play with. So the overall gameplay itself was at best average. For that reason I don’t think it’s underrated. Its gameplay is not very good. Combat is serviceable but not super fun and the puzzles are mediocre.

The quality of the characters and the writing was up there with the movies so that is the real standout aspect of the game. So it’s a game with average to below average gameplay but with a good cinema-like writing and character experience. If you want a game that could genuinely be considered a Guardians of the Galaxy movie spinoff that stands alongside the Marvel films in quality of writing and characters then the game meets those standards and should be praised for doing so. But it’s gameplay is ok at best and even mediocre in parts so from a gameplay perspective it shouldn’t be highly regarded and so with that level of gameplay I think it natural that it’s not highly rated or remembered by a lot of people.

big issue to me was how bad Avengers was, and how the charecrers felt like porn knockoffs of the MCU. Does this one have the same issue of “kinda sorta cheap chinese MCU knockoff?”
I've seen this a lot for both Avengers and GotG, and I hate it so much.

Most of these characters have existed for over half a century. And they've been depicted differently by every artist. Expecting Iron Man to always look like Robert Downey Jr is stupid as hell. People didn't clown on Spider-Man for not having the movie faces.

It came hot off the heels of the shite avengers game... pretty much the reason why.

It really is a great game that actually tried to be different, it easily could of just been a 3rd person shooter or something.

It is an absolute shame that it's been under represented, it's more of a shame though that crystal dynamics keeps getting put on big projects and shitting up the games and the industry, while Squeenix dumped this studio as well.

Completely agree about it being wildly underrated. Maybe a case of it getting overshadowed by Avengers and the negative reaction to that one, even though they are not all that similar when it comes to what they were trying to do.
Avenger is definitely the reason that Guardians flopped.
Back then I watched a lot of the show case reaction videos, and when the trailers for Guardians were shown most of the reactions were like
- same company as Avengers
- looks like Avengers
-> I dont care about it

There was zero hype, and the positives opinions were all after launch when there were very positive reviews and some people got their hands on the game

If the Avengers game was in the same style as the Guardians of the Galaxy one instead of the low effort GaaS shite we got them I’d wager both games would have been successful.

Because Avengers and general super hero videogames these days suck.

Guardians is a nice Game, it plays like Remant tons of actions and exploring is according to the game scope , as most people played it because got it on Plus. It's the Best super hero Game since the Batmans arkman and is a shame developers focus on Gaas instead singleplayer aventure.

I wished this was more like Mass Effect. Choose my team, pick objectives, less linear, etc. Looking back at my old posts, the combat really annoyed me.

I got it for free from EGS and haven’t gotten around to it yet, will soon.
Need to finish as many games as possible before Monster Hunter Wilds comes out.

Thank God someone else called out the mediocre gameplay. It's totally functional and totally serviceable, but that's the best I can say. Here's your core loop: circle strafe around the enemies, use Guardian powers, use special ammo, use regular ammo, and repeat as your cool downs allow. There's no strategy. There's no thought. There's no challenge. There's no variation.

GoTG's gameplays feels like what would have happened if Ubisoft made Mass Effect.

I had fun with the game.

It was great in some areas, but in other ones wasn't that good or was even mediocre. I think it was good, but not great.

It had more "personality" than Mass Effect had in terms of the banter between the members of the team, (as well as the great music) that being said it will be a miracle if we ever get another installment...

…I never thought in a million years I wouldn’t see another GoTG game after the Telltale ones and not only did I get a new game but it almost fit in almost perfectly with the Telltale game’s story.

There’s always hope.

Been enjoying messing around on the Pro. This game really did set a new bar for character party banter. I swear you never hear the same line twice. It’s pretty fucking incredible in that regard. BioWare wishes they were this good with their writing nowadays.

Great game. It got caught up in the negative discord surrounding Marvel's Avengers. It never stood a chance. Somewhat similar to what happened with Midnight Suns. Great licensed games that got dragged down by a worse game sharing the IP.

About 12 months back I got 2-3 hours into it (Epic Games Store freebie, I think) and then, when I went to resume my game, it displayed a "Save file is corrupt and cannot be used" type error. It then wanted me to start over and I haven't been back since.
I'll go back to it eventually, I guess.

Because I think its a very much a on rails adventure game and not a space rpg that we want where we are free to visit whatever planet we want and explore. The entire time i was playing it I wished it was a RPG with freedom to do whatever I wanted. Nonetheless its a great game.

Simple.

It’s a Marvel IP, so I am not interested in the slightest. And I loved the two Deus Ex games from Eidos Montreal

Your loss, even with 0 understanding of Marvel movies or anything at all, it's still the best written, and most interesting, comical action-adventure game to release in the past 10 years.

Also has the best soundtrack and VA of any game just about as well - probably even tops whatever GTA radio you pick, thanks to its licensed music of ~30+ songs.
