I get that they probably don't need the full development team now that the goal is just to churn out periodic content updates to keep the current player base locked in, but, I don't know, why not have them start development on a new GaaS title, since they obviously know what they're doing?

The shortsighted ruthlessness of the industry in the GaaS sector continues, I guess.

Honestly what a shit industry. I guess everyone’s Dad who ever called them a retard and told them to get a real job for wanting to work in the videogame industry was right all along.

Only way it seems worth it to me is to dump all your energy into a passion project in your spare time while you have a regular day job. It’s a roll of the dice whether you even get noticed but the payoff is huge for guys like Balatro guy, Manor Lords guy, Undertale guy, Stardew Valley guy, etc.

It's a creative industry. This is how it goes. It's not a "real job" in the way other jobs are.

You don't make a product to compete with your new product right away. Why spend the money making a new GaaS, just to then split your player base and possibly kill MR?

Chinese company gonna do Chinese company bullshit.

The tweet from Jack Burrows where he says that it was a pleasure to work with his American colleagues suggests as much.

Bit of industry insider advice: Do not work with China, kids.
The Chinese discovering how much money capitalist bullshit can make them

What are you applying? Other successful tech companies don't lay off people?

I noticed that too, so I'm assuming they were the localization team and they are seen as unnecessary now.

Do we know the position of these people who got laid off?

Just that it's weird that he specifically says he'll miss his American team but not the Chinese team. Sounds like they either didn't speak or didn't get along

The big devs/pubs don't offer much to game creators dreaming of making games. Your favorite team who made your favorite game doesn't exist, and the people currently working in the office don't know how the last game was made. Working for one of these companies without a union contract or at least some profit sharing deal is practically a scam.

While there's still a lottery-winning aspect to blowing up as an indie, the risk/reward of making a game with a small team (<10) and owning a big piece of it seems wildly better than being one of 50 salaried programmers on a Ubisoft game.

Welcome to the video game industry, where you can make one of the biggest games worldwide and it be a huge success and you still get laid off. What a weird time to be alive.

If they started preproduction right now, the game wouldn't be out for like 5 years anyway. Plenty of time for Marvel Rivals to have a full life cycle.

This is the director from the game's Chinese official website. Who the fuck is this Sasser claiming to be the game's director?

Chinese companies are shit to their employees, and basically use them as fodder until they burn out.
Recently there was a story of a China car manufacturer that opened a factory in Brazil, and brought over some of their employees from China to help set it up and run it, and the conditions of these Chinese employees were so horrible that the Brazilian press ran an expose and accused them of treating their Chinese employees with slave like conditions.

I'm implying that Chinese companies suck. I think that was clear.

We don't know the reasons why these people got fired. Naughty Dog fired many who worked for Factions since there wasn't any more work to do. Are you implying they should become charities?

Which has nothing to do with highly qualified foreign staff who aren't even located in China.

It has to do with their attitude, they treat foreign staff better only because they can't get away with it, but they will do whatever they can get away with.

I completely get the general sentiment here, but this is probably more on NetEase just being a totally shitty company. I don't think any other company would have done this had they had such a smashing success like Marvel Rivals.

nope. this is how the industry even on the west works. It's just that now the boot is on the other foot.

Headline is misleading. As far as I can tell the Chinese devs are still there, they just put out a new update video today.

Who exactly are the people that were laid off? Some “R&D team” what? Huh?

I paid good money for this Dynex!

I am implying nothing. I am stating, clearly and unequivocally, that Chinese companies suck. Whatever did or did not happen in this specific instance, that maxim is ironclad. I am sure that whatever details come out will bear that out.

Netease gonna Netease I guess. Game has been doing great, and still is. Still has tons of potential too. Makes me wonder if they looked at the US roles and were just crossing out roles they feel like they no longer need, at least not in the US.

I wonder how they're going to address this, or if they even will. I feel like that's not too common at all with companies based in China. But a lot of their community is gonna be concerned about the future of the game. This likely won't affect anything in a negative way, but clearly a lot of people are taking this out of context and running with it.

That was part of a wide organization restructuring due to a variety of factors, something that I'm not aware is happening at NetEase in general.
BUT, I just saw that the actual director of Marvel Rivals was Guangyun Chen and he doesn't seem to be part of these lay-offs. Still, pretty fucking weird to target this development team in particular.

This is the same guy who mouthed off about how they're amazing and not like the Concord guys.

Honestly kind of ironic he meets their same fate too.

Has there been anything equivalent to this case in the West?
I just posted a video here from bellular news.

its similar to foreign work contracted by Western studios (Naughty Dog, Ubisoft etc.) what is significant is that it is usually the other way around. The other post I did about Bobby Kotick paints a bigger picture:

The Western industry is losing competitiveness and relevance.
