So I’ve been enjoying the app Bigscreen the last month or so. Just sitting back, watching 3D movies and shooting the shit with strangers.

Last night we were about to start Venom in 3D, and I asked, if Venom could beat either of the Terminators in Terminator 2. That was an insane conversation.

Then while we waited to start a movie, some dude was throwing out accusations that scientists couldn’t possibly know how long sharks have been around on this planet. This pissed off a few of the science geeks in the room.

Yeah some of the VR movie theaters conversations I've had have been pretty funny.

I've never watched a 3d movie on my quest 3... guess I should check out Bigscreen to see its rentable library. (I don't like social features though, I'll immediately turn those off.)

Or there are apparently some decent apps to play your downloaded 3D movies from Plex or local network but I haven't had the time to investigate them... has anyone tested them out?

I haven’t tried any other movie apps on the Quest 3. But even if you don’t like the social aspects, you can mute everyone and block anyone that’s bothering you. It’s really simple.

Enable DLNA in plex and you can stream your 3D movies using bigscreen.

hmm that's local network though, yes? I host all my content on a remote plex server/seedbox, would be annoying to have to use my PC as a middleman on local network for it.

Some of the apps probably let you add servers though IP, check out SkyBox and 4XVR too, if Big Screen doesn't. SkyBox is better at playing back videos anyway, and 4XVR is better yet, at 3D videos, not 2D.

Strange to have /your/ content hosted remotely on a Plex server. Half the point for me is to host it on my own network, then if the internet goes down, which happens from time to time, it doesn't disrupt my media watching for the most part. Local servers aren't affected by network outages. Plus there's always the issue of putting my personally ripped movies and shows on to a remote server, even if it's encrypted, I am always paranoid it'll be swept for copyright and I'll have it all deleted on me.

I picked up a Quest 3 128GB in-store from GameStop for $405 with the $25 off $250 pro coupon. Just a PSA: when you buy a NEW Quest 3 or Quest 3s between 9/25/2024-4/30/2025 you get to redeem Batman Arkham Shadow upon activation. GS didn't show anything about Batman for the Quest 3 128GB so I was worried, but it had an option to redeem and now says 'Purchased' in my library. Additionally they give you a 3 month trial of Quest+ subscription which will take you through the holiday season.

Quest 3 at $430 with Batman is a killer deal. I would still recommend that over a Quest 3s unless you are hard capped at $300.

Pretty damn impressive for standalone. Especially the second half of the video.

The basic difference comes down to lightning, which is noticeably more drastic on PSVR2/PCVR, but still. Pretty damn good.

It really looks like Metro was built around the Quest 3, then just beefed up on the other VR platforms.

That should be the norm going forward.
Nah, that should not be the norm.... We don't want VR graphics/visuals held back by the quest. The quest 3 is the series S of vr headsets. Other than it being wireless, it's thoroughly unremarkable and I say this as someone who owns a quest 3.

Right. If someone wants to see people that actually own both headsets, there are tons of youtube videos out there of people showing evidence of them using both and comparing them, even pushing them to the limits with PCVR.

The vast majority of these people prefer Quest 3. That doesn't mean PSVR2 is bad.

But a guy coming into a Quest thread that takes every opportunity to slam Quest in other threads more than suspect. "But I own both!" That's the oldest trick in the book and no one buys it. Even if you actually did, you're trolling.

I feel the same way though (although my words wouldn't be so harsh). I loved everything about the Rift S except for it's lack of visual firepower. I plan to get a Quest 3 soon but it's frustrating because Meta is hoarding every meaningful VR title and forcing us to buy their system when I would much rather use my Reverb G2 because of the fantastic visual clarity and sound it has.

If Meta would release a higher end, wired Quest model with visual and audio on par with the Index or Reverb G2, then I would be in heaven.

I almost went with the G2, but playing DCS I definitely so a clarity edge for Quest 3. I never thought pancake lenses could be that much of a gamecharger, especially considering the G2 has a resolution edge.

I don't think it's that bad as long as Quest keeps iterating. Eventually it'll be as strong as the PSVR2 via PS5, whether that comes in Quest 4, 5 or 6, part of the fun is the progression, it's like I still find Nintendo games quite enjoyable even though they're not on the level of Sony or Steam visually.

I think the complaints about catering to Quest platforms need to be restructured to Sony for not porting/supporting more hybrid VR games, that's where I would put the blame, not on developers looking to hit a larger audience by adding in a native Quest port.

With the Quest ecosystem being the most popular and has the most units sold, yeah, devs should build to that first, then upgrade for the other two.

Unlike you Romulus Romulus , I don't have a reason to lie. Everything I say is straight facts. If I say the quest is unremarkable, it is unremarkable. It's so unremarkable that Meta couldn't convince enough people to buy it at it's price point so they had to make a more unremarkable device, the quest 3s.

Meanwhile, people are paying $1k for an iphone with no notable upgrades, $500 for a Series X with no good games, etc. That is to tell you how unremarkable the quest 3 is. Pancake lenses? Great and thats about it. No must play games, no must use features, etc.

I'm not shitting on the quest..... I'm just telling you the reality of the quest and that is, it's unremarkable.

For sure the quest should keep iterating and improving. My argument is that games should be ported down to the quest and not ported up from the quest. The whole of vr be it pc or console should not be held ransom by mobile chipsets.

I have a Quest3 and a PSVR2. I’m a big fan of both. For PCVR gaming PSVR2 is on another level when it comes to colour accuracy and pop, contrast, brightness and black level. On the other hand I can see why folks would prefer Q3 due to no cable, clarity, massive sweet spot and lack of mura.

The types of games I play tend to play are dark horror type games or ones in space and for that the PSVR2 is unbeatable.

For standalone Q3 is awesome. Meta have been fantastic at releasing lots of quality updates on their headset.

For folks that have both, why do you prefer Q3 for PCVR gaming? I’m curious.

Bought a quest 3 like 4 months ago and was blown away so I jumped on the psvr2 when it dropped to 300 bucks. I read all the negative stuff about fresnel lenses but figured it was all overblown. Yea, well, they suck. GT7 and RE4 are probably the most impressive games outside of Alyx. I will give them that.

Virtual desktop is amazing. It's not laggy or anything. The freedom to use it all over your home untethered is a major plus. You can also actually read text on the damn thing so it's also like a portable pc monitor.

Compared to what? It's the most "complete" product on the market. Instantly boot-and-play with no extra hardware to buy.

An untethered, which is frankly the most non-negotiable feature of all for VR going forward. The companies who are insisting on connected cables are forcing room-scale games to be an afterthought on their platforms, so one of the key dimensions of free movement gets sidelined and the whole medium is held back as a consequence.

I'm in the same boat. I prefer psvr2 for racing games on PC. Everything else Q3.

Whether you like it or not to the ma$$es quest is vr and now with the s the quest 3 should get a quest 2 like mainstream push and that money feeds 80% of the entire vr ecosystem so if you want nice vr games for the immediate future quest 3 should be a priority

To most other products? VR does not exist in a vacuum nor does it compete against itself. It’s inferior to other vr devices in its computation power. It’s inferior to other vr devices in its lenses. It’s superior to other vr devices in terms of price to performance but at the end of the day, it’s not compelling.

There are still not many reason to pick up a quest 3 or any vr device. Why should one the average person use a quest 3? I’m still searching for the answer.

I think you made a typo, the pancake lens are absolutely a generation better than the fresnel ones in the PSVR2. Which results in actually being able to fucking read things the headset is displaying outside of the direct center screen. Which is kinda important for literally everything except gaming really.

It's pretty apparent what someone gains from booting up RE4 in VR or GT7 in VR vs the flat, but do they give a shit is the bigger question?

3D TVs died and were a fad, the 3D on the 3DS was largely ignored and Nintendo even released subsequent models without the 3D. And 3D movies are pretty poor, so why are we surprised VR is also pretty niche? People by in large simply don't care about things being 3D.

VR-only is a very different thing from "I can play this game on my screen or put on the headset, but it's the same game."

That (plus untethered, roomscale focus) is why I feel that the all-in-one platform of the Quest is the most important thing for VR gaming today. In the case of PSVR, so many of the experiences are optional modes on existing games (GT7, RE4, etc), which falls into the problem you're identifying of "I can play it either way, not worth the extra complication and expense for just adding 3D." Sony's high price tag combined with this effect is basically just setting VR up to fail.

But since Quest is 100% VR, it kills the concept of making VR just an add-on mode for other titles. So you get things like a true Arkham game built entirely for VR without any flat screen compromises, or amazing experiences The Seventh Guest. That can be compelling. But making VR an option will never work. It has to be a situation where you either play it in VR or simply don't get to play it.

I don't really think the 7th Guest does anything that RE4 doesn't do tbh. You move the same way in both games, and the experience of shooting and interacting with the weapons and enemies in RE4 to me is similar to the experience of grabbing crap off tables and doing VR puzzles.

And GT7 in VR with a wheel is as transformative as you can possibly get, you're basically driving million dollar race cars at that point, minus the physical Gs.

But it's really just a don't give a shit when it comes down to it. Alyx IS that VR experience, and despite like "everyone" wanting to play it, Alyx could release directly on PS5 tomorrow and PSVR2 could drop to $100 and I doubt you'd even see half as many units move as something like Half-Life 3 would sell flat day 1.

Any chance there will be more bundles of DLC courses in Walkabout Minigolf soon? I've about played all the ones In the Whole in One version I got.
I feel like a scrooge for not buying them individually, they are only 4 bucks each, but it adds up.

Most people who have never tried VR wrongly assume VR is just 3D on your face, myself included. Calling VR "3D" is selling it short. The real problem is that (relatively speaking) very few people have tried a headset in their lives and don't have an idea what is really like.

3D TV's were for the most part flawed. I still have my 3D TV and it works great still, but the 3D always suffered from ghosting, plus the small screen always had issues with scale. 3D movies were great when shot native, but studios just pumped out interpolated 'cardboard cut-out' 3D movies.
VR is both more than 3D, but also gives you 'perfect 3D' - scale isn't an issue (and actually a major if not the major plus) because you are 'in' the game, ghosting is gone because your eyes are literally seeing two different screens.

I don't things will change significantly until they bring out something the size and weight of a pair of sunglasses that instantly switches on as soon at it touches your face and immerses you in fast and fluid eye resolution VR. We are not their yet.

Even my brilliant Q3 takes a good while to boot (can't leave it in standby as it kills the battery). It needs to be as quick and easy to use as a TV.

I leave mine in standby since launch, even if I go a full week without touching it it'll still have a decent amount of battery left, a bit under half, but I have the battery strap so that instantly makes it like 125% again. But charging is pretty fast, I just top it off Sundays takes like an hour or two tops, then it's good for another week.

I wouldn’t say they’re killing the hype. They’ve let people test the game out in advance, allowed for in depth previews. I think they’re still sort of new to the big AAA type of release that this is.

Yeah there was waaaaay more hands on previews than previous Meta games. They actually let a wide range of people play it that were Batman focused channels that didn't like VR.
