I watched a couple movies lately

Gladiator 2 - great fucking movie, if you don’t like it get your test levels checked out
Red One - this is the stupidest piece of shit movie I’ve watched in years, one of those you turn on with the family because nothing else is interesting but like… bruh come on
King of Comedy - I’m a big Scorsese fan but never watched it and it’s great. Gets carried by a brilliant Deniro and Jerry Lee Lewis.

The Fellowship of the Ring. It almost all holds up well 20+ years after release. The CG for the cave troll is not that good by today's standards.

That being said, the New Zealand scenery, galloping horses, well crafted costumes, and very good acting make for an excellent movie. Too bad Marvel movies can't live up to this.

I watched the first half in 4K streaming (on Amazon), and second half on my blu-ray. The audio and video was much better on the bluray despite not being 4K.

Civil War

It was alright, maybe a 3/5.

Spoiler for those that have seen it.

I know everywhere says Lee died but she got shot in her kevlar and there was no blood to show it hit anything but her kevlar, not sure why they’re all saying she died.

What were your thoughts?

Used the holidays to catch up on a bunch of movies I missed in 2024:

The Coffee Table
The wife and I usually find that if Jay from RLM likes a movie, we’ll probably like it (the one exception so far has been Beyond the Black Rainbow, awful). This is a good, horrifying, weirdly funny movie, throughly enjoyed it.

Speak No Evil
Didn’t see the original and by the sounds of things I would’ve liked it more. Still enjoyed it if only for how good James McAvoy is, gotta be one of the best actors working today.

Longlegs
Good, not something I’d watch again but enjoyable.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
This franchise is way better than it has any right to be. They’re not masterpieces or anything, but I’ve never had a bad time with the reboot series. Solid dependable monke movie.

Joker 2
After reading a bunch of the negativity I had a sneaking suspicion I would like this, the details I heard about were right up my alley. I kind of loved it? It reminded me of two (admittedly far better) movies that I adore: Dancer in the Dark and Punch Drunk Love.

Movie is about how hard reporters have it. Made it suck.

People under the stairs

One of Wes Cravens more unique horror films in his body of work. It has a simple premise that sets the movie up, but what it evolves too is straight up bat shit insanity. The movie is also noted for its villains, a deranged couple which is played by Everett McGill and Wendy Robie. These particular actors portrayed another weird relationship in Twin Peaks and I remember Wes Craven talking in a interview that he liked the weird chemistry between them and asked if they could turn it up a notch. And o'boy do they turn it up. Here they play the craziest, most unhinged and over the top villains you can find in a 90s horror film. They are brothers and sisters who works as landlords that extorts an entire community for money. They call themselves Daddy and Mommy and keep abducted and abused children locked away in the basement. Daddy runs around in a gimp suit most of the time going buckwild with a shotgun blastingup his entire house. In short, they have a couple of screws loose to say the least.

The movie is also very progressive for its time. A young black teenager as the main lead living in a poverty struck community. He goes up against an evil white rich couple that runs the local neighborhood in to the ground for their own means. Yes, the movie has a biting social commentary about gentrification and capitalism, racism and poverty. If it was released today it would probably get accused for being woke. It's not something you are used to see in a horror film like this and while it does get a bit cliched Craven handles the movies themes like a pro, by adding satire and over the top black comedy. It makes the movie work on many levels and it can be enjoyed from a lot of various perspectives.

I'd say this is the best movie from Craven that is not A Nightmare on Elm Street or Scream.

Watched 'Man on Fire' with my son last night. The 47 metacriritc for this is incredibly harsh, the performances are great, the editing is crazy but justified, and the traditional revenge narrative plays out solidly and then gets subverted nicely.
As far as revenge flicks go I would say this is a classic.

The First Omen

Good movie, and well done prequel but I also recently watched Sydney Sweeney’s Immaculate last year and they got Sydney to star in almost the same movie.

Just finished watching A View to a Kill. Roger Moore was too old for the role in that movie, IMO. But it has Christopher Walken so I van overlook it.

The shifting first-person perspective could have seemed really gimmicky but I thought it worked really well, particularly in a story where the difference in perspective the two characters have plays a significant role in the story.

Not quite finished with this one as my wife and I started it late, but it is quite powerful.
It is about a boy with a rare muscular disease that lived a somewhat double life within World of Warcraft - unbeknownst to his close family.
Very touching, and an incredibly unique documentary. They compiled all his actions and chats within WoW and recreated scenes akin to an animated movie.
It got dusty for me many, many times and we're maybe 2/3rds through. Highly, highly recommended.

That's right, but AVtaK was his last Bond. However it is a good movie.
It is a good movie. I enjoy it every time I watch it. It's just obvious when I watch it that Moore had lost a step so some of the transitions from stunt doubles look a bit ham fisted.

Jodorowsky's Dune

Decided to start my 2025 movie journey with this documentary about this unmade epic. Of course, massive promises or it's greatness are sang all through the thing, but I personally feel like it might not have ages especially well. It was also very different to the original novel. It's a fun watch, especially as Alejandro Jodorowsky is full of energy and speaks with passion. A good watch, if nothing else.

She is cute and annoying enough that you believe she could break through the walls Creasy has built up. Then she dissappears once the set-up is complete and the actual film starts.
But damn why did she have so much gum in her mouth.

Nosferatu (2024)

I totally loathed the last Eggers film I saw, The Lighthouse. I finished it, but had nothing good to say about it. Thankfully this film didn't turn into a sudden wankfest. It was certainly a retelling of Dracula, and therefore easy to follow. I found myself looking at my watch quite often, it tells me that the film was moving slow. I didn't care for Depp's performance, but Hoult and Dafoe were excellent as always. Didn't love, but didn't despise it either.

Neighbours from Hell
Started The Order, couldn't finish it last night, but really liked what I saw. Will finish it today. Have a lengthy backlog of movies to catch up on.

My first film of 2025, and it was excellent. Using a talk show to move the narrative forward and breaking the fourth wall kept my attention. The pacing was impeccable, each act was engaging and never felt monotonous. It wasn’t as scary as I’d hoped it’d be, but the crescendo moment at the end was a satisfying trade-off. I’d recommend this even if you don’t like horrors.

Rewatched Heretic and Dracula (1958) today.

Christopher Lee is my favourite Dracula. I really don’t like the Dracula with Gary Oldman.

Going to rewatch 28 Days Later. Still to watch Eyes Wide Shut. Also going to watch Underwater (2020) and The Outrun (2024).

Kevin Costner in the Body Guard —-2.5 stars

Sonic the Hedgehog 1. 3/4 stars
Sonic the hedgehog 2 3/4 stars

True Grit w/ John Wayne—- 4 stars. (I think i still like the remake better, but this is excellent).

There's weird films, and rhen there's this one. I don't even know where to begin. The story itself is quite straightforward, but it's told in weird ways, with campy clothes and sets, ununderstandable dialogue, and lot of scenes and cuts that make no sense. No wonder nobody liked the film when it was released. I should have known cult films are like this. Well, st least I have now seen it.

Nosferatu

One of the best movie going experiences I've had in the last 20 years. An absolute masterclass in film making, from direction to acting, dialogue, cinematography and suspense. It was frightening and beautiful at the same time, so mesmerizing in it's visual flare that I sat with my eyes wide open just completely stunned. I didn't even think about the running time or felt that I wanted the movie to end. The cast was brilliant. Bill Skarsgård was fucking fantastic as Count Orlok. Completely unrecognizable, even more so than Pennywise. The rest of the cast was equally great, with Lily Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe giving their absolute all, creating powerhouse performances that will be remembered for a long time. Especially Defoe and Depp were breathtaking in their respective roles.

I've been a fan of Robert Eggers for a long time, starting with the Witch, but now I consider him one of the best, if not the best film director of his generation. His thorough approach to research and dedication to keeping it historically accurate makes his movies wholly unique. Nosferatu is his best work and that is saying something considering the high quality of his previous work. I hope he gets all the accolades and awards for this movie. He's earned it. It's the best aesthetically and artistically made horror film since The Exorcist.

The count of Monte Cristobal (2024) French language film. It was good and had great scenery buildup and characters. It is 3 hours but good. 4/5

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Watched the Mad Max trilogy:

Mad Max - This feels like it didn't age well. It's not very post apocalyptic and more like it's in the poor side of Australia. Not to mention it's obviously low budget.
Mad Max 2 - Now this is where it becomes great and what I expected from Mad Max
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome - This movie is weird. The first half was cool and Mad Max like, then next part
doesn't feel like Mad Max and looks like a coming-of-age adventure ala Peter Pan

Saw this one last week as well and loved it.

Eggers has been a bit of and up and down for me. Witch was great, Lighthouse was trash and Northman was ok. IMO Nosferatu now was his best and whether you like his movies or not in general, I think he got a unique artistic style.

One of the few directors where I look forward to what he’ll be doing next (aside from Villeneuve and Nolan).

I loved The Witch. The Lighthouse was good. The Northman too but was disappointed it wasn't very horror.

Really looking forward to Nosferatu. I could go see it in cinema. I did have ticket for it but cancelled. Not sure what to do. Might go this friday or just wait for home release.
