[Nintendo Life] Xenoblade Chronicles X Wii U vs Switch graphic comparison

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Hard to believe this game is already ten years old.

Until you said it, I didn't realize it. Wow. What a weird thought.

Anyway, I think the Switch version looks quite a bit better and the character art is mercifully improved. I didn't love the game when I first played it, but I enjoyed it enough to finish it. I'm curious what they've done to smooth out the gameplay and progression. I'll play this, but... yeah, waiting for the Switch 2.

I can barely tell the difference, but then again this is one of the best looking WiiU games so I wasn’t expecting much of a difference either way.

Would love to see what they can do with a sequel on Switch 2.

I do want to give this one another chance.

Peeps will say it takes less, but they're full of shit. If you play this game the way that all Xenoblade games are meant to be played (by being an OCD autist clearing MMO type sidequests for dozens and dozens of hours with a sprinkle of main quest shit in between) you won't see the real meat and potatoes until you're well over 50 hours deep. Shit, it takes a good 20 just to get a grasp on how the systems work.

I bounced off the Wii U version after a few hours because I didn’t understand wtf was going on. I’ll use a walkthrough this time.

You shouldn't have to use one, but if you gotta, you gotta. It's a weird game for sure. Definitely the red headed step child of the franchise.

Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind when I played it 10 years ago. I'll reference a guide if I'm unclear on something and don't fully understand the mechanics. That way I'm not just giving up.

I've never finished any games of this franchise... played probably 35+ hours of the very first one on Wii, loved it but life got too busy, never returned to go further. Occasionally I get the inclination to pick a new one up but can't even figure out which entry would be best.

Will probably pick this up.
I remember being hyped by it but then lost interest when I was told you get the mechs like 30 hours into the game and the story is basically an afterthought. But I've always wanted to give it a try, the world has always seemed really cool.

As much as I love the Xenoblade series, Besides the later high-level battles in the mechs and the environments X wasn't my cup of tea due to the absolute bare bones shallow story, I would still play this if it was designed as a Switch 2 game taking advantage of the hardware, A switch port just doesn't intrigue me at the moment, I was a little hyped originally with this games announcement but that has died down fast.

The main highlight for me is the colors and the resolution. It looks so much more vibrant and clear than before. Characters' faces and UI are also a nice upgrade over the Wii U version. Lin Lee got a huge improvement, and she no longer looks like a creepy doll.

Xenoblade X had some of the sexiest costumes in the series IMO. I'm waiting to see if that's censored or not. It's been 10 years, and the Nintendo of today is quite different.

Yeah, the character models are a big upgrade for sure.

I have to use the voucher soon since Switch 2 games aren't eligible. Let's say I have no idea whatsoever about the series, would this be a good point of entry, or should I get Xenoblade Chronicles 3? Is the overall gameplay close to FF12?

XCX is (at least for now) totally unconnected to XC 1-3. XCX is a good entry point for the series, whereas you really need to play 1&2 to get the most out of 3.

Gameplay is sort of similar to FF XII in the sense that it’s an “offline MMO” with AI controlled party members. It’s a lot more active though. You auto-attack and you have a bunch of special moves you’ll be using off cooldown. Many of them are positional. Some will put a field on the ground that give you bonuses/healing/etc for standing in them.

Is the combat better than XC2?

Honestly it’s been so long since I played X that I’m not sure how to compare them. I feel like X was slightly more complex and less spongy. There’s a class system where every class has a melee + ranged weapon with separate move sets for each and eventually you can mix/match them. It also lets you target and destroy enemy body parts to get extra items.

And of course you get giant robots to pilot, with their own movesets that are determined by the load out of weapons you pick.
