Nintendo/NERD potential making their own PSSR with DLSS

Nintendo upscaling patent show some interesting information. Some tipbits:The patent outlines an example where native 4K textures might bump a game’s install size up to 60GB, while a 1080 native version that uses upscaling could get away with just 20GB, which is still less than the current 32GB cap on existing Switch cartridge memory sizes

If will be interesting to compare it to PSSR in docked mode or
Xess/FSR mobile PC Portables vs Handheld mode

Edit: this thread will looking back on when Next PS Portable and Xbox Handheld are released.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Every hardware and software company's working on this sort of thing, doesn't mean they'll opt to use it over having access to DLSS or whatever else is supported natively/by most devs.

A lot cool stuff in that patent. Alex does a good job parsing it and condensing it down for a video as opposed to reading 39 pages of what seems like a foreign language.

Here's a link to the patent.

Link to original DF Weekly video clip was taken from.

Some talking points:
1. Nintendo filed a patent in 2023 that was approved in Dec. 2024
2. It's broadly describes image upconversion using a neural network
3. Also covers something similar to neural textures for reducing game sizes on carts
4. Describes both ML and non-ML implementations
5. Describes cloud streaming implementation
6. Primarily shows method that doesn't use motion vectors, but states they can be used for higher quality implementation
7. Describes a method of implementing different "DLSS" precision levels and swapping them real-time, as opposed to dynamic resolution

I wonder what this means. will they high resolution textures when the game is connected online.

My guess for a case use, if it's even used, would be going from "docked" to "handheld" power limits. In this scenario, Switch 2 might not be able to use any form of DLSS 3/4, so it has a cheap FSR/XeSS-type fallback mode.
I thought this point and your example in the other thread was pretty interesting/clever. Sounds very ‘Nintendo’.

I think the patent is casting a broad net for all possible cases. It's probably just server-side "DLSS" like GeForce Now. It's also possible they could use it for enhancing video streams like RTX Video Super Resolution.

oh ok. thanks for the explanation

Oh man, I linked this the day it came out in one of the Switch 2 threads...and literally no one even noticed, lol.

I haven't watched the DF video yet, but based on those bullet points they may have glossed over the mention of DLSS only working when attached to an outlet. Not exactly surprising, but worth pointing out.
Do you remember if this was in the original video or the patent?

The patent.
I should say that this filing is kinda insane and covers a whole lot of processes and scenarios, so the mentions of DLSS "when plugged into an AC power supply" vs. base resolution (the example was 540p) "when commuting home from work" could simply just be an option and not necessarily a hard line policy/standard for Switch 2. It could very well be just a toggle that essentially overlocks the unit to be able to engage DLSS with a known caveat(possibly a warning message) that battery life will be dramatically shorter once engaged, but that is pure speculation. It might be mentioned deeper in the text, but I didn't notice. So, take it with a grain of salt, potentially.

Nintendo Switch 2 isn't revealed yet but it keeps getting stronger.
Yes. i think the device it going to surprise a lot of people and Devs when its finally released. They are doing many things differently compared to the other PC handhelds on the market. People forget Valve Dev Gobe was impressed the switch when it was released.

Good job NERD

As in Nintendo European Research & Development.

I think this possibly maybe a full frame upscaler that could be in something like a dock. Not built into the renderer with access to 3d data.

Idk I just could t listen to this guy long enough to get all the info. 😂
