My Quest 3S has arrived, finally. It was a bit delayed so Amazon refunded me the shipping costs which was nice, that means I got it even cheaper than local stores here.

The unboxing experience was pretty great and high end premium product like, though it seems to lack any kind of start/setup leaflet, I didn't even know what's the power button or if I should charge it before turning it on etc., still it was pretty painless to get it going after all except when logging in with Facebook account and even requiring a phone at some steps (beyond allowing the new sign in device), like why? Anyway, it feels like a premium product and I like the box doubling as a storage base for when you aren't playing, it's really neat. Beyond that, the viewing experience screen wise is better than the CV1 I last had, as it was much lower resolution despite being OLED. I suppose it's not crystal clear and sharp but it's more than fine unless the given app/game runs in even lower than "native" resolution which makes it a jagfest but I'm sure that's the case on any VR device.

The foam padding seems better than CV1 but I'm sure I'll get a third party replacement cover later and try to avoid sweating while playing until then, lol.

The interface/OS is pretty nice but they really should bundle something like the original CV1 "first contact" as "fist encounters" made to pimp mixed reality potential was just meh, bland and unexciting in comparison, though the room scanning and such was pretty smooth and cool.

The bundled Batman seems polished but I was unimpressed tbh, combat is kind of weird, rigid and gesture-like and the scale of everything seems a bit off to me, including slightly oversized hands and the height of objects and scale of rooms/locations. Maybe it's the cartoony art style, I dunno.

I'll probably give PC VR an attempt though I'm sure my wi-fi isn't good enough for that and then look up how to sideload things like RTCW, Half-Life, Doom 3 etc. VR mods that run in stand alone. I'll get Metro after I'm done with Batman cos a friend worked hard on that and otherwise Idk what's next, lol, I splurged a bit too much so I will have to stick to the freebies for a bit. I'll also need a decent link cable if wi-fi PC VR proves as bad as I imagine for me so that I can play all my current VR stuff as I have most of them on Steam instead so even if they're stand alone too I don't have them.

Edit: I remembered I had a few games on the Oculus PC app that weren't on Steam, most were PC only but some were crossbuy so I'm downloading Lies Beneath now but Journey of the Gods is not even showing up when searching, what's going on with that? I own it, give it to me even if delisted!

I've also confirmed Air Link doesn't work for shit on my set up, lol, it was lag city, I couldn't do anything.

Instead of playing I'm posting, ffs VR developers relent a bit so I can play, don't you know VR is dead :p

Quest specific bundle. There's also a repeat of there Steam VR bundle.

Do these activate on the main app store for Meta or what? I currently can't add a freaking card on my Meta account so can't buy anything, lmao. I imagine that site doesn't have the same issue so I could get them. I would probably play Swarm and Death Horizon from the small selection on there.

Edit: yep, it worked, you just get a key to activate on the Meta store, nice. But I actually started with something not on sale, Amid Evil, lol. Meta don't want my money atm so I got this one and Unification from some store credit I got (though I trialed Into Black and others first, great game for later).

Edit again: I bought more, SWARM, Cosmodread, Arcade Paradise and Startenders because I thought it's that 3rd Owlchemy game, Cosmonious High, my bad! That and Arcade Paradise aren't my thing, but the others ace. I almost got Tactical Assault as well but it's a Steam key only, not for Quest...

Looks like you already got it working but for myself I used the Meta phone app to redeem them since my headset is always being used by someone else.

Also Arcade Paradise is a decent recommendation. It also has a neat MR mode that lets you place an arcade cabinet in your room. Creed is supposed to be good but I already have Thrill of the Fight. Ragnarock is fun but there's a ridiculous amount of DLC not included. Swarm and Zero Caliber are supposedly good but I've yet to try them cause everyone's hogging my headset.

Having a funny back and forth with Meta support in regards to the issue where I bought Journey of the Gods as a crossbuy game, activated it on the Rift back in the day, now that I finally have a Quest 3S the game has been delisted (apparently owners can download it and it gives a warning about potential issues with outdated software but otherwise works) so I don't get the option to activate it on my Quest to have the stand alone version. First I kept getting folks telling me that not every game is crossbuy and it's up to the developer so I had to re-explain the situation and the issue which has nothing to do with that as it STILL says the game is "proud to support" crossbuy on the pages you can access, now they've switched their tune to how they can't do anything and it's a developer's responsibility and decision to list/delist games (again, the issue isn't the delisting for new customers but that I as an owner don't have it in my Quest library because I never got to activate it for Quest, only for Rift even though I bought it for both) even though it's an Oculus Studios published game which I also have to spell out for them because they can't even read the game page properly apparently. I wonder what they'll think of next to deflect. I could contact Turtle Rock Studios, maybe they have some spare keys to give me but they could just as easily tell me to fuck off and speak to the publisher. So yeah Meta need to fix this. Or at least understand the issue and then tell me they still can't help if they really can't take the matter up to someone who can flip the switch of ownership for the game on my Quest library. God corporations can suck so much some times. I don't even care for the game, it's great but hardly replayable fully linear as it is so I'd just check it out for a few minutes on my new Quest but the ineptitude and deflecting is hilarious. Their account/ownership system hasn't accounted for the possibility of something rare like this happening, ie owning a game but not activating it before it gets delisted, why try to pass it off first as not crossbuy, then throw blame to others.

Edit: 3 different pages you can still access showing all this info I had to keep repeating for every new person contacting me to proclaim the issue is not there or theirs to solve, crossbuy, oculus, etc. (I don't even know why it has 2 pages for PC, maybe a relic or later Rift/Quest entries got one id).
Edit again: their latest email is asking me about my PC specs and if they meet the base game requirements like we're talking the PC version not launching or something, lmfao, how could someone even begin to believe this is the issue I've been contacting them about, this ineptitude is just unreal.

And again: we're back to contact the developer we can't add/remove games from people's libraries or whatever else. IT'S AN OCULUS STUDIOS RELEASE! I'm contacting YOU! Lol. They just refuse to acknowledge the issue is on their end because it's a rare situation not accounted for in the system.

Quest Games Optimizer (is still) on sale for $5.99 USD

I was surprised how many games are rendering in terrible low resolutions for no good reason. I mean, you would think that it was for better performance or longer battery life, but that doesn't seem to be true for many games. Even the quest environments are rendering in a low resolution..!?
I've only uninstalled it a while ago because you always needed to connect the headset to a PC on every reboot. Looks like you don't need to do that anymore.

Tbh I was a bit disappointed with how jagged and aliased many things looked when my kit finally arrived, but I chalked it up to getting the 3S instead of 3. Though it's still technically way higher resolution than the CV1 which was my last so I expected better results. I'll try this at some point I guess.

Finaly got my Quest 3 (non S).

The visual comfort is huge, pretty impressive. Just tried linked to PCVR on our game beta build and the visual gain is pretty impressive. This afternoon I try Batman and an UE5 AR prototype
Same, I got a non S Quest 3 for Christmas, only had an Oculus CV1 beforehand, the upgrade is massive especially the pass through to setup space a pass through if you exceed it. I can only play in a small office room atm but I'm setting up a dedicated gaming room in the new year.

I'm using it cabled to PC atm, bought a new router especially for wireless but havnt tried that yet either.

I only really played Half Life Alyx but it looks amazing, the lenses and resolution are amazing.

To be honest they still look like shit even with QGO. Not that I ever use those environments cause I prefer having pass through but still compare those shitty environments to what we have in Meta's own Theater Elsewhere and it's just really jarring how low effort they are.

So what are everyone's top VR games of 2024?

Batman - Easy choice for me. It doesn't need the qualifier that it's a good VR game. It's a good game that's elevated further by being in VR.
Vendetta Forever - Essentially more Superhot.
Max Mustard - Nothing ground breaking but it's fun and solid platformer.
Sky Runner / Track Craft - I really love MR games. They make me feel like a kid again.
Triangle Strategy - Same reason as above except with the added boost of me loving table top games and SRPGs.

Metro and Behemoth ain't bad but I don't think they were particularly amazing either. I found Behemoth particularly janky.

For 2025 I'm looking forward to the public release of Doom 3 RoE.

What's a good & cheap USB 3 to C cable to use for VR stuff? The included charging cable is C to C and my PC has no C. Using a phone charging cable didn't even enable file transfer on my 3S so I can't get SideQuest and Team Beef stuff. I got a few cool games over the holidays but need Beef!

The ones from Iniu or Kiwi should be good. The Iniu Cable also has a charging port.

I'm also thinking about getting the Puppis S1. My Archer C6 Router is okay, but could be better.

If you guys aren't happy with the black levels on the Quest 3 you can try this experimental setting called Content Adaptive Brightness Control

It's pretty good and even works with Link/Virtual Desktop

Definitely works. Even going from psvr2 and switching to Quest 3, the setting narrows that gap alot. Still noticeable but nowhere near as bad.

No more PowerWash Simulator VR updates due to low sales

Thought it would do better, but afaik the port wasn't great and it's also kinda expensive.

I bought it to support them but yea it's not a good port and they didnt make good use of the Quest 3. Turned off a lot of people surely.

So, this just got shadow dropped on Steam and looks pretty rad, hopefully it's awesome like its style and intent.
Just embedding its trailer cos it looks rad with 0 public/media attention but pretty good (but so very few) user reviews, VR would benefit from supporting it so it becomes better rather than have the studio shut down because of 0 sales. Also cos they revived their twitter which reminded me it exists.
