... with this little Japan-only gem:

King's Field was released on December 16, 1994, only thirteen days after the PlayStation console's Japanese release.

And the rest is history:

Happy anniversary, you amazing beasts!

I still find the early history of FromSoft so interesting. King's Field itself is clearly "inspired" by the likes of Ultima, but they accomplished quite a feat there with having a game like that this early in the life cycle of the PS1 itself finished. The next couple of iterations were obviously much better and the AC games had (arguably even more) a huge following as well.

So, what did these guys first cook up with Demon's Souls, which they had to scrap, gave up and let Miyazaki take over because the project didn't really took off yet. How different was it from the Demon's Souls we know, how much King's Field (or Shadow Tower) was maybe still in it? They probably didn't scrap the Art Team overnight, so I'm thinking there were some overlaps in designs or something at least. Obviously Miyazaki himself was hugely influential, but he himself had to be influenced by the already talented people working there himself when he got hired with basically zero gamedev knowledge. It's interesting to think about what kind of an enviroment this had to have been for something like Demon's Souls to emerge from.

One hell of a developer, massive win for Sony if deal closes.
That organic growth will be huge for Sony.

What's the obsession with being bought by any large publisher? Sony is by far one of the worst choices due to their woke push. Soon enough your Knights in Armours will have purple hair or be bald, dildos for swords and a "strong and independent" personality with the ugliest women in gaming to date. I hope they stay independent.

Where do you read obsession in my post? Just making fun of Sony's organic growth statement. I'm not a fan of publishers being bought, that's a console warrior/fanboy fetish.

A god-tier developer with an impeccable track record. Their influence and importance in the industry cannot be overstated.

I'd love current Fromsoft's take on a new King's Field.

The most atmospheric game ever, loved the f out of it at the time. ..It was also the clunkiest game ever, but let's not speak about that, it's not important..

I said its a massive win for Sony. I disagree with you on them being one of the worst choices. I think the opposite actually.

...And created the most boring ass sub-genre: "Souls Like".
Yeah, bought Dark Souls back on 360. Haven't gone near their games after that or anything advertised as souls like.

Edit: actually bought Star wars: fallen order on sale, noped out of it after about 5 hours.

I’d like to know why they named themselves “FROM”. It’s a weird name.
