History says you're wrong. Doing the same thing but faster/better has always led to lower sales. And that then leads to them doing something "whacky" as you put it.
GB sold great. They went and made a GBA - same thing but faster/better. Sold worse.
Then they went and made the 2 screened DS and sold a ton.
Then they said we will make a better faster DS and include 3d too. Same thing...sold much worse.
They kept doing the same thing but faster/better with their consoles - NES, SNES, N64 and finally GC and each one sold worse than the one before. ... until they will did something quite different with the Wii and had their best selling console ever.
They said well let's do Wii U -keep the Wii name in there, add a 2nd screen but have b/c and wiimote support. Flopped hard.
Then they changed gears, combined their console and handheld and had big success with something different in the Switch.
