I used to watch that show!
Mam do you have proof this isn't true or is this just trolling?

If the Switch starts catching up then I’m expecting this number to increase by another 5-10 million. Maybe they’ll find more sales hidden under the bed or something
Jimbo pulled those extra numbers out of his own ass a year or so ago. XBox has become irrelevant in recent years and Sony is well on their way to follow suit in recent years with their ridiculous practices and low effort/boring release schedule.

Clever of them to say "Over" so they can just keep making up numbers each time the Switch get's close. "170 is over 160" "220 is over 160"

If they know the total, they should say the total.
I mean I wouldn't doubt if it was more than 160 million, especially when it was 100 bucks and often went on sale for 50 a few years into the PS360 gen where it was cheaper than a next gen game

It's the GOAT console. Edging out SNES basically due to how shitty the EA Sports SNES ports were. Inexplicable! (unless there's a cool technical explanation you can link me)

I dont know how the hell Switch started getting classified as a home console when its main selling point is being portable, but even if the Ps2 does get passed up, its sales performance was is more impressive considering it did that when gaming was considered niche and in a shorter time span. The Ps2 had the best library and released at the perfect time to take advantage of the DVD era.

The Ps3 would have probably done the same if it wasnt over priced and made with the cell architecture. I still think that console had the best features at release and the Ps6 should copy its OS.

Why did people think Jim would lie about that?
Idk man, this time around the 160M PS2 sales figure is coming straight from Sony themselves, so it's as official as it gets so surely there's no more doubters... right?

Oh wait, let's go back to #5 post in this very thread and see what they said.

Shorter time span? It took over a decade to pass the 150 million mark, the Switch hasn’t even been on the market for 8 years and is going to pass the 150 million number this holiday season. I’m not sure if gaming was niche either, the late 90s on is where consoles surged in popularity and the generation right after the PS2 sold by far most consoles ever. Even the PS2/Xbox/GC generation outsold PS4/One/Wii U.

Wow. Now, that's a pretty good sales number.
Still remember the absolute thrill of getting this on release day.
And it could play DVD's!!

Those days were pretty awesome for consoles. Ps2, gamecube and xbox were all brilliant, and each had their unique qualities.

Amazing numbers!

I had one but I can’t really remember playing many games on it. I was more of a PC gamer back then and Japanese games weren’t really my thing. Then I got OG xbox, played PGR and Halo on it and probably never turned on my PS2 ever again.

I hope Konami will now return to the glory of its ps2 days
PS needs to return to the glory of its PS2 days.
PS2 limitations provide constraint that forces studios to be more creative while lower game dev costs allow studios to take bigger risks.
The strict restrictions are why it's the last true game console - game size limit, no DLC, no micro-transactions, no F2P. It's built around great single player offline games and provides a game focused UX.
Until PS engineers a new bespoke CPU/GPU (not x86 AMD) that provides limitations/constraint and has lower game dev costs - the PS2 HW's the only way Sony can bring back their winning formula.
The Ps3 would have probably done the same if it wasnt over priced and made with the cell architecture. I still think that console had the best features at release and the Ps6 should copy its OS.
If the PS3 had been a logical successor to the PS2 it would have done the same number of units.
An affordable PS2 console with better specs (EE2+GS2) will sell better than the original PS2.

The original PS3 design was the closest to a PS2 successor we could ever hope for. It would have likely been even more expensive to manufacture (at least initially) than what we eventually got though - Ken's ambitions couldn't be boxed in to a mid-gen upgrade.

I mean - maybe someone could engineer a PS2 class console using an FPGA now that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Add a distribution platform and...

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
If you two want to believe that in 13 years of production that Sony didn't replace, lose, have damaged in transport, stolen or gave away any more than 636,884 consoles allowing them to sell at least 160,000,001 consoles then that's fine. I'll think the number etched in the picture has to be incorrect if they did sell 160 million.
yea it applies the same for switch.

160 million dvd players. Not saying that it wouldn’t have done well without it. But the first entree level lowest priced dvd player during first launch years at the time helped a lot. Some individuals just bought it for that, not a game machine.
That's an odd thing to say.

A game console sold because of what it offered as a whole package. All those features (including the DVD player) were in there for a reason: to sell the gaming console.

Doesn't matter if the Switch outsells it. The PS2 still won by a MASSIVE landslide over the GC and Xbox. And it was painfully clear the GC and Xbox lost. Even the Ninty fans admit it even though they want to argue that it still made a profit (doesn't matter, Nintendo changed its strategy from competing on power to being different, otherwise if they were content with the GC's mild profit, they would've continued making more consoles like GC). Whereas the Switch is competing against the PS4 and PS5 which aren't that far behind and are still widely regarded as successes. GC was a failure in every regard.

Mostly unimportant but Nintendo fanboys are demonstrably in shambles so it's fun.
They take every Playstation success as an attack on their ego. That's why they're the absolute worst fanboys. They vehemently want to belittle everything Sony has ever done and turn everything into a pissing contest. (oh wow Astrobot sold 1.5 mil copies, well Super Mario sold 130334455 copies lolololzz)

Switch may not have dropped in price but it did sell in like what, 3 SKUs - Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Switch OG. I bought all 3, so that must mean several other Ninty fans did the same thing with rebuying hardware, so it makes the Switch's sales even less impressive. And then there's like several different bundles and editions like Zelda TOTK and Switch Lite Hyrule edition and knowing full well how fanatical their fans are, would literally collect EVERY edition available to showcase their massive videogame collections. Like seriously, Nintendo fans will rebuy the same thing in different variations and colors many, many, many times over bc that's how obsessed they are.

Also, Switch is a portable. I mean, can you imagine how easy it is to lose those things?? I wouldn't be surprised if lots of ppl had to rebuy a lost Switch.

I buy a PS2, it gets the YLOD, they send me a new one. Sony produced 2 consoles but I only purchased 1 console, apparently they only produced 160.6 million consoles but are claiming they sold 160 million of them.

The likely answer is that, the picture is nonsense and they produced millions more than sold because of all the issues we've mentioned. They can say exactly how many were sold but are choosing not to.
Most likely they just replaced the disk drive and returned the same unit.

PS2 YLOD? Wow your credibility just went down faster than SBF in a crypto scam. You're embarrassing yourself. Yeah, and I bought all 3 Switch versions - Lite, OLED, and OG. I guess my consumer habits diminished the Switch's sales too.

The GOAT.

But. Nintendo could easily surpass that by dropping the price of Switch to 150 - 200 USD.

Even then, Nintendo still lost their stranglehold in the portable market. They went from 2 pillar to only 1. DS line was discontinued.

Uh oh, a console being congratulated for selling a shit ton, but isn't Nintendo? Better suck off poor little Nintendo as they are somehow a victim in this celebration....

PS2 was an amazing console, for a lot, the best. So many memories and experiences that won't be forgotten. Outside of the games, whuch were so incredible and varied, but just hearing the start up sounds were exciting and comforting. Then off course putting in a disc and hoping not to see the dreaded red error screen was quite intense. Seeing an OG model against the last slim variant is quite something too.

This is how you know that the switch is absolutely, without question, going to surpass the PS2. Gotta shine up those numbers as best you can at this point.
