PS5 Pro owners, how silent is your unit? Any noticeable Coil Whine?

Whisper quiet just like my old PS5. Then again, It is in a 72 degree room with plenty of ventilation all around the console.

I wonder if we have a fan lottery and some are louder than others. It would help if people can take pics of the fan blades / Center of the fan to determine what models they have

Yeah does make me wonder. The Pro is soooo quiet compared to the Slim. I'm so much happier with the acoustic profile here, even playing harder games like TLoU II etc. So pleased. Again, it's not Series X quiet, but it's really excellent - in my case.

If I stand next to the console while playing I can hear the fan more than my OG PS5 DE.

Fortunately, I play games not standing by my console but sitting on the couch like a civilized human.

I think I have found the most comprehensive analysis/solution for this problem.

Skip to 24:40 for the summary.

The air flow design dries the joint soldering. Previously, others found that adding silicone between capacitors added inulsation, reducing the sound sometimes. However, this didn't work for many. The reason for this is because they focused solely on one or two components - the actual solution, according to this video explanation, is 'reflow every surface mount pad on the entire board'. Good news, you don't need to remove or replace anything. Bad news, it is time consuming.

Absolutely shocking stuff from SONY engineers here.

I think it could be useful for those that take issue with it, but personally I have no problem with the noise.

Maybe it's because I'm sitting away too far, or there is always too much background noise, unless I put my head right next to the system, from my experience it remains silent.

i dont know about coil whine, but the Pro is definitely louder than my original PS5, i mean loud as in i can hear it when there is literally no other noise(paused game), not loud as in PS4 pro 😆

I don't have one, but I do know everyone claiming theirs is silent either has bad hearing, is not being truthful, or doesn't know what "silent" means. Silent means literally no noise at all. No electronic device with a fan is completely silent. It may well be very quiet, to the point where you can't hear it if there's some ambient noise in your room, but it's not silent.

Is that considered loud? I feel like if you need to deep throat the Pro with a camera to capture coil whine, something is up.
It is all relative and it really depends on the noise floor of your room and the distance you’re sitting away from the PS5. My definition of a silent device would be something like MacBook Air since it is fanless with absolutely no coil whine. A quiet device would be something like the Series X or a Mac Mini that both have fans that are barely audible and almost no coil whine.

At this point, it appears that there may be some unicorn PS5 Pros with little coil whine and fans that do no emit any annoying whining/UFO sounds. It still sounds like the fan spins at higher RPM speeds that the launch PS5. So, a bit of a fan and coil whine lottery it is. The OG PS5 had absolutely no fan issues, but the coil whine was a lottery. The PS5 slim had no coil whine, but the fan lottery was real. Now we have the Pro where you have to play the lottery for both coil whine and fan sound profile.

It still depends on how far away you sit from the console. My console is on the desk and when someone calls something like that quiet I can only laugh about it. My Pro is definitely louder than my big Launch PS5.

I'm returning my Pro.

This is the second unit.

I've never experienced anything like it before with my other PlayStation consoles, and to see that is so endemic in their motherboard design is disheartening.

I tried resorting to headphones, but guess what? When I plugged them in to be charged by the Pro in rest mode, that coil whine began again.

So disappointing.

To be fair, this problem is not exclusive to Sony. My LG 48CX OLED also has audible coil whine when it is off and in standby mode. However, it’s dead quiet when it’s turned on. Even the Series X has an almost imperceptible coil whine when it’s left in the instant ON standby mode that lets it start super fast. However, you have to have your ear right next to the console.

I’ve also seen many powerful GPUs either having coil whine or causing motherboards or PSUs to produce coil whine. This is why making your own PC can be challenging if you are a quiet computing enthusiast.

My own “solution” years ago when I was dealing with the PS4 Pro monster was to run a long hdmi cable and put the console in an empty reach-in closet with the door closed. It did not overheat because of all the available space in there and the fact that it was not really hermetically sealed but it did cut down the noise to bearable levels.

Returned mine today, as well. Going to try my luck with one more. But honestly, a large number of them seem loud. You've got to be super lucky, I think.

does it get louder when playing 120hz games?

I was about to pick this up today, but all these returns you’re talking about and the coil whine and fan issues sounds like a lottery I don’t wanna participate on. Will skip this for this gen.

No coil whine but the fan makes a slight spinning sound as if it's not very well made.

Inaudible when playing games if I'm being honest.

The noise appeared in the following scenarios:

  • Playing in Performance Mode. Even in the menus, during Performance mode, made no difference. However, It was fine in Fidelity Mode.
  • Going through the menus on COD (which is a 120Hz game.)
  • When in rest mode charging controllers.
This is a screenshot from a Microsoft Zoom call with their Xbox engineering team. That video is still on YouTube, I believe, and they speak at length about how the acoustics were part of their design ambition when it came to the cooling. Clearly, by looking at the tens of thousands of comments online over the last 4 years, Sony did not factor this, or have not been able to for whatever reason. The fact that the Slims and Pro have the same issue suggests one of two things: (a) Sony doesn't care or (b) they cannot make any changes without a complete redesign.

So it seems, the console is using more power on average than the original PS5, and that increases the vibration acoustics inside, hence the sound.
i had 2 original PS5 and they both do the same thing as you described, it's like the coil whine is correlated with FPS
and had the same with an asus RX6800

Coil whine if it is there usually doss get worse at higher framerates. My MSI 2080 which had very high pitched whine would be silent at 60-90fps but soon as you pushed it to 144 it would be whine city.

Mine is silent on the menus but when cod starts in 120 hz the fans are somewhat loyd and has a little bit of coil whine...
If anybody can help me i dont mind the sound unless its a problem with the durability of my ps5 pro...
Do you think it affects the cycle life of the machine or it is not a problem?

I got to compare 2 because amazon screwed up. Both fans ramp up and one had really bad coil whine. The 2nd also had some coil whine but very faint. Now I gotta send the other back.

Also, why are screenshots impossible to transfer in bulk unless you back up or data transfer? Seems dumb.

Mine is whispering quiet. I'm running a disc version of Space Marine 2, and even the disc drive is quite noticeably quieter than the already quiet drive in my 2nd gen Fat PS5.

Screenshots in general on PS are a pain to deal with, imo. Seems everything has to be done with the app.

No coil whine thank you God!! ☝️⭐🙏

Besides that I can hear it when the fan ramp up but no coil whine means it’s a night and day difference. During the transfer when both were powered on I couldn’t hear the Pro at all because the old one was so loud vrrrrRRRRRR

10/10 would buy it again

One thing I'm noticing is that in my PS5 Pro, the game disc keeps spinning the entire time I'm playing the games hours on end, while in the fat PS5 (with the built-in disc drive), the disc will only spin for around 15 seconds when you start the game for verification purposes. The worrying thing here is that the external disc drive of the PS5 Pro/Slim will wear down sooner, and won't have anywhere near the longevity of the built-in disc drive.

I think I reduced the noise of my fan. It was making a distracting noise, even when gaming.
First I tested with placing my Pro horizontally, still made a noise so I put it back vertically.

Unscrewed my fan and put some small rubber o-rings between the screws and the PS5. Used o-rings of 1mm thickness so the fan is lifted ever so slightly from the PS5 chassis.
Tested a few games and the fan noise is reduced, still audible but around 40% reduced (at least to my ears).

Don't know if this will help others but I thought I'd mention it here.

I wonder how close are ppl sitting to their consoles.

If I put my ear to mine in standby mode, yes, I hear the coil whine. But I have to be like 5 cm from it to hear the noise.
And if anything, my hearing is TOO good, any loud noise causes me physical pain.

I do hear the fans while games are on, but it is not loud enough to drown the gameplay or even be distracting.

It certainly sucks that there is still luck of the draw here and some units are louder than the others.

It completely depends on how people live. You live next to a busy street? Your brain will filter out the droning noises subconsciously, but at the same time these noises will also overwhelm a PS5. So the conclusion to someone living like that will be "the PS5 is whisper quiet".

Me on the other hand, I live in a street with no car traffic, I can hear my fridge's generator turning on in the kitchen across the flat, multiple rooms away. I can hear my PS5s coil whine across rooms... So I would never say the PS5 is a silent system. And I learned to not believe anyone who says "this system in inaudible" - Yeah no, I'll hear it.

This is the sound I recorded. How terrible is this?

I hope a journalist picks up on this as its affecting countless people.

I can tell it's on if I'm on mute and nothing at all is happening in the house. No ventilation, no water in pipes, everyone asleep, no cars driving in front of the house.

It's audible when running games but not noisy at all. When you factor in the audio of games, you can't hear it running from what I played earlier today.

In my case, I think the coil whine is a bit quieter than the launch PS5, but it's still there. And I feel like the fan noise is a bit more audible on the Pro, which makes sense I guess.

Mine is loud. Loud enough that I'm pretty sure I'm going to return it and hope I get a quieter one.

Do you have it plugged directly into the wall socket, or an extension lead? I've read the former can help.

So after a few days using it here is my summary that seems to match most videos available:
- There is nearly no sound in idle state, i’d have to move my head right up to hear some faint fan sound.
-During load while gaming the fan spins up noticeably but i would not call it loud. mostly unnoticeable during regular game volume.
- When moving my head to the device while under load i can hear some faint buzzing covered behind the fan sound.

Compared to the Original PS5 the fan is “louder”, but the coile while is almost gone / not even comparable in the slightest.

My resume: i prefer the fan whirring over coil buzzing, as it is only noticeable when muting or at low volumes.

People saying Dead silent...You must mean when it's unplugged. Astro's playroom engages the fan and it's far from "dead silent".

Some context is important here. Yes, if anyone turns the game sound off and sits directly in front of the console then there is going to be audible noise from the fan. For me, it is incredibly low, but I literally have to turn off the game volume to hear it. But if we have to go to that extent to hear the thing then I'm not sure what point is being made. While playing normally, can you hear it? If no then it is "dead silent".

Not like.....

That's annoying. Mine sounds nothing like that. I seem to remember this being an issue at launch as well. Really just came down to the fan being used.

I'm curious.....if you look at the bottom of your Pro, can you tell where it was made?
