[Pure Xbox] We rated Indiana Jones and the Great Circle 6/10, but it is our GOTY 2024 (by our readers)

Bloggers trying to save face in the most embarrassing way possible proves once again that these people can't have any integrity or respect for any of this. They will just post anything, hoping to get enough ad revenue to survive, because they are incapableof getting any actual jobs.

"Ha ha, we're literally retarded and our readers told us to eat shit. Read more about it here."

I have my huge problems with it, but it's a clear 8/10 in my books despite some gameplay flaws and strange technical art.

I liked the puzzles and figuring out the tombs and such. Hate the combat. Like the stealth, but the frying pans and hammers, etc. that disintegrate after a couple of hits is a bit absurd. Think the Vatican was the best area by far and they should have left it for last. The visuals are fantastic. The story is good. Voice acting is amazing. Still think an Indy game should be third party, but that isn't in Machine Game's wheelhouse and first person turned out better than I thought.

I've tried really hard not to diss on this game since I haven't played it....but have you all not considered that releasing a game right before or during voting is going to give it an outsized number of votes. It's called recency bias. Do you perhaps think this could have an effect and perhaps there should be a gap between eligibility and voting in order to combat it?

I'll give you an example. Indiana Jones was too late to TGA this year, no?

Do you think it will win goty next year then? I'd argue it has no shot, not because it is bad, but because it will have released so long ago by then. Again, time between release and voting would be a key factor imho.

Most games have a honeymoon period and if you asked us to rate it then, it would be a 10/10. Only after a game is over and we've had time to consider it, can we truly be an accurate judge.
100%. Games that miss the GOTY cutoff are never, ever seen in the next year, even if they are technically GOTY eligible. They just die.

Their 6/10 score was definitely an outlier that felt like it was out there to generate rage clicks.

Across all platforms this year, Indiana Jones would likely be my personal runner up for GOTY. I still give the nod, slightly, to Astro Bot. Bear in mind I haven't gotten to play all of the major releases (like Wukong) due to finances so I'm going by what I have played this year. My top five, in order, would be: Astro Bot, Indiana Jones, Stellar Blade, Metaphor, and FF7 Rebirth.

It’s not about being detached from regular gamers. A gaming journalist is just another gamer with an opinion and personal taste in games, just like any of us here. A critic’s opinion isn’t worth more or less or is more correct or more wrong than regular gamers opinions. It’s literally just one opinion. The only distinct difference from regular gamers like us is that a game critic gets paid to write down his opinion on a game while we do it for free here on GAF.

For me it’s a rare 10 and the GOTY just like for the readers there. Absolutely loved it.

For someone else it could be a 5. Valid opinion too. It all depends what types of games you like and if you can deal with first person perspective and the often slow speed and most importantly if you’re a fan of Indiana Jones or not. Like I don’t personally think someone who don’t like the old movies would rate it over 8. The fan service is definitely a big bonus. I guess it’s kinda like how Astro Bot is for PlayStation fans. Lots of the good things that got me smiling would fly over the heads of those not as deeply interested.
This reads like the reflections of a gaming journalist who would praise the game with a 5/5. The world is shrinking around you Eriksson!

Its just opinions at the end of the day.

Game is an absolute classic for me and I can see it's flaws. I could see Someone giving it an 8. Maybe a 7 but I wouldn't agree with them and that's fine.

6 seems like someone who doesn't know what a good game is.

i'd have to agree with the 6/10 rating. The gameplay just isn't there for me. I did a few of the missions in Egypt and dropped it.
I want to try the game but this is the main thing I'm worried about. I don't think I've heard much of anything positive about the gameplay. The stealth sounds horrible and I'm a huge fan of stealth.

Once again it proves how detached those "gaming journalists" are from actual players.

Here is the reader's complete top 10...

10. Death Stranding Director's Cut
9. Star Wars Outlaws
8. Dragon Age: Veilguard
7. Metaphor: Refantazio
6. Dragon's Dogma 2
5. Space Marine 2
4. Stalker 2
3. Hellblade 2
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
1. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

If I could reorder them....

9. Hellblade 2
8. Dragon Age:Veilguard
7. Star Wars Outlaws
6. Stalker 2
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
4. Dragon's Dogma 2
3. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
2. Space Marine 2
1. Metaphor: Refantazio

I left Death Stranding out because I played that years ago and doesn't feel right ranking it against games of today

This is the exact reason why so called games journalists are completely irrelevant.

If i want to know about a game I'll just visit here or the steam forums, that way i will get a accurate information regarding the game.

This game was hugely affected by recency bias. Had this come out in January/February of last year, it would have sold like shit and been long forgotten by now.

"Gaming" journalists are not even "gaming" journalists anymore.

"Gaming" journalism died when Xbox One/PS4 era began.

Imagine getting mad because the popularity contest winner got a 6/10 from these guys (not a dig at Indy before anyone thinks otherwise).
Not an independent news outlet.
Owned by same parent company as Push Square.

Gaming media is nearly 100% fraudulent.
Non-news, they've always been sister websites to Push Square, Nintendo Life and Time Extension (most of which, if you realize, are dedicated to a single platform).

They’re not wrong imo. I give it a 7/10 but if it had just ok graphics and voice acting, it would probably be a 6/10 for me too. The great presentation bumps it up for me.

What’s interesting imo is that when you read the review, their only complaint is that the game isn’t Uncharted. They lament the lack of set pieces, they complain about the open areas and their so-called “lack of focus”, they disliked the stealth and lack of action.

They’re entitled to their shit opinion but the players’ vote shows that this approach (instead of the “Disneyland ride”) actually works for them.

It doesn’t. It’s a great game that does a fantastic job recapturing the feel of an Indiana Jones adventure.

Release timing was a shame though, if this came out 6 weeks earlier I feel like it would’ve been talked about a lot more for end of year awards
Yeah it was thrown under the bus with that release date. Would’ve easily been nominated for the TGA GOTY award. At absolute minimum it would’ve given Troy Baker a voice performance award. But as it is, unless the hype somehow pick up again and the PlayStation release blow up with lots of talk, the jury will forget that it’s eligible for TGA 2025.

I loved stealth in the Wolfenstein games and stealth in this game is far less enjoyable.

What is it about this game and all the desperate sensationalism?
The bootlicker shills can't handle that it is a great game not on their $800 doorstop so it needs ramming down their throats by every outlet until they finally understand. Blame the bootlickers not the game.

The Xbox as a gaming platform has been a complete disaster for the best part of a decade as far as I am concerned ending with four years of sparse but mostly lacklustre releases on the Xbox Series X|S consoles and a Game Pass subscription that did absolutely nothing for me as it is comprised of mostly old third-party games and indie releases that are available on other platforms anyway.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle though was a genuine surprise and was my favourite game of 2024, although I bought and played it on Steam (PC) and not Xbox. And the fact that I can play Xbox games on PC at better framerates and with better visuals is why Xbox is basically irrelevant to me as a gaming platform.

Ohh yeah, wow, I guess that did exist... and reading this, I want to say I was aware, since it sounds more like a program where they have people on standby to connect with the community or for product feedback but I never thought it would result in behavior that is often called out here or it was for that purpose, lol. Well, well, what can I say! Anyway, thank you!

Unfortunately that was the first score of the game I saw.

I’m glad I don’t put too much stock in gaming reviews anymore besides user scores on Metacritic, and even some of those can be deceiving.

I feel bad for developers and publishers because reviews can affect public perception.

That being said, Indiana Jones is a great game to me, easily an 8 or 9/10.

You can tell with the game design and engine it has one foot in classic gaming on an old engine while doing an incredible job uplifting the graphics at times. It wasn't a surprise to see some seeing it as dated yet it will have strong appeal with gamers that just want something to get into and enjoy old Deus Ex Riddick gaming. Hopefully it will have long legs.
