Qualcomm Announces Next Gen Snapdragon-G Series Chips, Built For Handheld Gaming Experiences

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Highlights:
  • The next generation of the Snapdragon G Series includes Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, and Snapdragon G1 Gen 2, each tailored to deliver next-level performance and immersive gaming experiences.
  • The Snapdragon G Series offers gamers the ability to choose to play cloud, console, Android, or PC games while on-the-go.
  • Starting this quarter, OEMs including AYANEO, ONEXSUGAR and Retroid Pocket will have handheld gaming devices powered by new Snapdragon G Series platforms.

It's being speculated that the Retroid Pocket 6 will release later this year with the G2 Gen 2 chip, which has an approximately 200% faster GPU than the Snapdragon 865 used in the Retroid Pocket 5.

They also specifically mention the Ayaneo Pocket S2, the OneXPlayer ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1 (quite the product name!), and the Retroid Pocket Classic.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
It's actually a device I'm kind of interested in

Dual screen, foldable, clamshell design. Looks... familiar?

I almost purchased a RGCube XX for its aspect ratio to emulate 3DS, because my retroid pocket 4 and Steam Deck’s aspect ratio isn’t the best for 3DS. But this looks much better for 3DS emulation

Can it run Crysis?
These new chips are about a 30% performance increase from the previous generation. Here's a Retro Game Corps review of the AYANEO Pocket EVO, which uses the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2

They didn't test Crysis (not even sure if it runs in Winlator yet), but some of the PC games they tested were struggling pretty badly on this device - What Remains of Edith Finch getting about 15fps at 1080p is pretty criminal, but probably down more to the fact that it's running via emulation.

Whole Crysis trilogy is playable with Winlator

And they run on High (not 3 tho) at native resolution in my 8g2

PC games on android is a sight to behold rn.

I've played AC 2/Brotherhood, Hitman Absolution, Crash 4, Alan Wake, Crysis 1/2/3/Warhead, Dead Space 1/2/3, Bioshock, Yakuza Zero and more.

People have no idea how advanced it already is

I want to see how this new chip compares to the Elite, the best of the best we have today.

Can't run any PC games, meh.

Maybe it can.

The thing with the G series from Qualcomm is that they're more powerful on paper than a similar Snapdragon 8, but in the real world they don't have as much support so don't perform up to the specs.
