Question about splinter cell

VinnyMac

Member
ok so I finally got my hands on a fat ps2 for a good price, I've been picking up games i passed on to play. I want to get into splinter cell as I've always been an MGS mark so I never gave it a shot. does playing them out of order mess the story up or is there a cannon way to play the games like mgs?

Play the Xbox versions ideally. PS2 were butchered up.

They’re not really connected story wise but the mechanics evolved throughout the trilogy so as always it’s best to play in release order.

Splinter Cell - Pandora Tomorrow - Chaos Theory.

Then finally Double Agent.

Don’t go any further than those.

DO NOT play these games on a shitty PS2. This was one of the best games for demonstrating how much better the Xbox was than the rest of the competition. Seriously don't do that to yourself.

PS2 was a fucking joke piece of garbage that only succeeded because it was a cheap DVD player and had the backing of extremely talented and creative Japanese minds.

The story of these games are quite barebones compared to MGS, but the gameplay is good. Since every game iterates on the previous, it makes most sense to just start with the first.

Even Double Agent was kind of iffy. The 360 version and Xbox 1 versions of the games were literally completely different, and were made by different studios. The Xbox 1 game is better, and feels more true to what Splinter Cell is... but you can really tell that there's a lack of budget and polish that went into that one. I thought it was decent, but nowhere near the level of quality the first three had.

Splinter cell was much better on xbox for sure, but the rest of your take is fucking absolute brain rot garbage. Oh it only succeeded because of it's great functionality and support from devs which equals great games! That's a fucking positive thing, not negative.

I don't remember the story being the best so you probably could play them out of sequence. Also, I would only play the first three on the OG Xbox if you can. The PS2 were considerably stripped down from what I've heard. The OG Xbox versions are also playable on the Series consoles if you have one.

Conviction and Blacklist were both better games than Double Agent.

I knew the Xbox versions of these and so many other games were significantly better but watching clips of the comparison between both is unreal. Practically different games.

I see that Gaf knows their Splinter Cell and who deserves the top spot as far as stealth games go...this warms my heart.

That being said, OP listen to the advice. If you HAVE to play on console, play them on Xbox if you can through backwards compatibility because it'll give you access to the best version of Double Agent which is on the original Xbox. Otherwise PC is the best option...but as far as I know playing Pandora Tomorrow on PC is impossible "officially" now unless you own the old dvds

Yep, really not worth playing any other version. Incredible games, though!

MGS shits on these games for every metric possible.

They haven’t aged well at all and control like a donkey with Down syndrome into a canyon of dicks ass backwards.

I love Metal Gear but I also love Splinter Cell. This is a crazy take and could not be more wrong in every way.

Splinter Cell was a technical marvel, it had realistic, very good gameplay. Chaos Theory was a masterpiece with so many different paths to complete objectives. The story was good, Sam Fisher and Michael Ironside were fantastic.

PS2 version should be fine, just make sure to get a component cable to get the best visuals you can out of the PS2, and softmod it with FreeMCBoot, I believe Splinter Cell is one of the few titles that can output in 480p. Or just get the PC version.

Play through Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory. Those are the quintessential Splinter Cell games, imho. Even though there is an overarching story line, I'd say that there's less of a focus on that in the first three games; each game is basically self-contained but references something that happened before from time to time. Afaik, they've concentrated on the overarching storyline much heavier in the games following Chaos Theory.

I didn't even know they released the first Splinter Cell on PS2. OG Xbox is where I played the original trilogy...(Chaos Theory is trash buckets far as Spy vs Mercs is concerned, fight me).

sad OP was just happy sharing he just got a PS2 just to realize best way to play these gems is on XBox.
(i played them on GCN though, which were closer to xbox in terms of visuals)

I wouldn't play Splinter Cell on PS2 either way tbh.

PC or Xbox is the way to go.
the PS2 version of the first game is ok I guess, Pandora Tomorrow already showed the limitations, and Chaos Theory is almost a different game due to how much they had to downgrade the PS2 version

Indeed, playing it on PC or Xbox is the ideal option for Chaos Theory and Pandora Tomorrow.

Playing it on Gamecube is like tasting Soy ice cream.

What a shit take
If you don't want to take it from me, an enthusiast knowledgeable on these consoles capabilities, take it from a head game designer who's worked on and released multiple games for both consoles and is Japanese as well:

The PS2 was cheap garbage. Even the GameCube shits on it but because it lacked full DVD support it failed.

Play them in order starting with the first. Congrats on finally playing the greatest stealth espionage series of all time.

Don't play them on the PS2 - those games are Xbox or bust for playing on a console.

Either way, the stories are almost entirely standalone and are kind of a minor part of the experience. MGS it ain't.

I also played on GCN (only the first one though), but I don't think what you're saying is accurate. Pretty sure the GCN version is much closer to the PS2 version. At least the first game, maybe that changed later on.

The PS2 is a great console, but the Splinter Cell 1-4 ports were extremely downgraded, so I wouldn't recommend playing those versions. I recommend PC verison (+ dgvoodoo because without it dynamic shadows will not work), or xbox versions.

interesting quote 5m38s: "I think entertainment needs sexuality and violence. If entertainment lacks sexual elements, it's entertainment no more". I wonder what would he say about games for modern audiences:messenger_tears_of_joy:?

Definitely start with the original and go from there - Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, Double Agent and end on Conviction. Dont ignore Conviction.

If you're still up for more then give Blacklist a shot.

I have hard copies of the original Xbox trilogy and recently replayed. They all hold up wonderfully for the most part. Just pure Clancy espionage action. They sure dont make em like that anymore.

And weirdly popping the old discs into my 360 gives them some sort of boost in the visuals and framerate? Ive never seen it happen with any other OG Xbox game.

maybe man, i just remember reading on EGM and they always ranked GCN being better than ps2 one, but yeah maybe difference was way more with Xbox

To be fair, the OP wasn't asking which version was best. He was simply asking if it was a good game for the system he bought.

Why bring this nonsense in?
