Rumor: Apple to take 3 years between full iPhone model changes

But yeah, if true, anyone that had a 6 and wanted to get one this fall...

I have a 6 and I'm still going to be able to get a new iPhone this fall. You might want to read it a little more carefully? It's body redesigns that are moving to every 3 years, not new phones period. There will still be a new iPhone model every year.

Most people are probably keeping their phones longer now, so it kinda makes sense. And yeah, they are really out of interesting hardware features to add.

Now that I'm on the AT&T Next plan and I paid full fucking unsubsidized price for this iPhone 6 Plus... you damn well better believe I'm going to hang on to this thing longer than 18 months - 2 years.

Higher resolution screen - Already can't see the individual pixels unless I look VERY closely. Useless.
More durability - Nothing a case can't solve
Waterproofing - As long as it does go kaput in rain, I am fine.
Better camera - Yes, I want a great camera
Better fingerprint scanner - Mine works fine, and even if I have to reapply the finger, it's faster than putting in the code.
Smaller bezels - Don't see how they could get any smaller, honestly.
More internal storage - I have yet to max out my storage. I'm on 128 GB.
Long-term: foldable/stretchable display. Physically morphing display, etc.
- What for?

Not convinced.

I am ok with this. My 6 can definitely do another year and with the extra time in between they can finally bring back that "wow" factor they have been missing for a while.

Like, a long, long, looooooong way off.

Projectors are big. Even Pico projectors are generally the size of a phone by themselves.

There have already been phones with projectors built into them.

And this is apparently in pre-production page according to Gizmodo.

Not convinced.

"Nothing a case can't solve" classic self-centered thinking, "this doesn't specifically affect me so nobody needs it"

Here's an idea, what if you didn't need to spend additional money on a case because the phone itself was more sturdy? I sure as hell don't like cases, both because it's an additional, many times expensive fee on top of an already expensive product, and 9 out of 10 times winds up making my equipment look like shit.

"This feature already works fine for me so there's no reason to improve it."

Don't see how the bezels could get smaller? I don't personally have a problem with them but maybe look at like, any other phone in the world, edge-to-edge screens are a thing and have been for a while with rumors saying Apple themselves are finally looking into reducing/removing them entirely next year. We even have phones where the screen extends beyond the bezel of the phone and wraps around the side.

Incoming "upgrade every three years" plans on networks instead of every two.

And they'll give you some bullshit about how it's a better value.

I read the news entirely. Of course there's gonna be a brand new iPhone every year.

Then maybe reword your post because it sounds like you're saying the people that bought the iPhone 6/6+ and were looking forward to getting a new iPhone this fall will not be getting a new iPhone this fall. They will be. It just won't have a redesigned body.

Edit: I just re-read your post to see if I misunderstood it and honestly the GIF coupled with what you wrote is just confusing me now. Your text reads like they'll be left wanting but your GIF indicates "suckers just got a phone well line back up to get another one" ? Help ):

I thought that the AT&T Next plan was specifically for people that wanted to get a new phone every 12-24 months? Why join that if you plan on keeping the phone longer.

Yeah the entire point is that now you lease the phone for a monthly fee and you can trade it in for a new phone every year, instead of paying an up-front fee and then more than the actual cost of the phone over a 2-year period.

On a semi-related note, is it safe to buy an iPad Air 2 (with LTE) for my wife? I have an Air 2 myself, and she's been wanting one as well. I'm assuming the next Air won't come out for a while, and probably won't be a huge upgrade?

It's called the iPad Pro 9.7". It's the Air 2 replacement.

Mind you I would wait for whatever the next 9.7" iteration is that ups the ram.

You actually do slightly better selling it every 12 months. You can recoup more of the cost and it ends up costing you approximately $200 to have the newest phone every year.

It's less work for Apple. I guess they will get criticised even more for not innovating, but Apple will always remain Apple. They don't give a fuck. They know people will buy their products blindly. They managed to sell a repackaged iPhone 5s for the price of an Android flagship.

all of the internals of the iPhone SE are new, it's literally not a repackaged 5S

it's basically 6S guts inside a 5S shell. are you basically mad because it looks the same?

Again, that not true. It has some chips from the iPhone 6s, but not all parts. The battery is smaller and some components like the display, front camera, outer shell, and the fingerprint scanner are all from the old iPhone 5s. I think that really lazy considering how much they are charging for it.

meh I personally think they aren't doing any cycle anymore at all. They're simply going to the "whatever is ready at the time". If a feature they want isn't ready but it is ready on what would normally be an 's' year then they'll do it. No more tick tock no 3 year cycle bullshit. Just whenever what they want to do is ready they'll do it. Maybe its 1 year maybe it's 2 maybe it's 3.

Kind of expected this when all the rumours are saying the goodies are coming for the 2017 phone, and the case leaks for this year's looked like a refined 6. Add to that next year is the Xth anniversary of the iPhone.

Not really. I know plenty of people that have ruined their iPhones by spilling water on it. I know even more that have cracked their screens when they didn't use a case. My 6s fingerprint scanner generally works well, but if my hands are even mildly wet, it doesn't work whatsoever. The bezels on the current crop of iPhones are utterly massive compared to many of their Android counterparts. 16GB of internal storage is pathetic in this day and age. The Plus models have solid battery life, but by solid, I mean 1 day of heavy use. 2-3 days would be much better. Everyone forgets to charge overnight every now and then. Quick charging is something I miss from my Galaxy.

The screen resolution and camera are already pretty solid, but those could also be improved.
i thought the latest models quick charged if you used an iPad charger...

They'll "quick charge" up to 80% regardless of what charger they're on, and trick charge after that. But yes, since the iPhone 6/+ they'll use up to 2.4A which is the 12W charger that comes with the iPads. And now the big iPad Pro can use the 29W charger that comes with the rMB!

I usually get every iPhone iteration but am skipping this generation unless they really push the form factor/bezels.

And if they stick with removing the headphone port I'll probably go Android in a year; even if Android manufacturers follo suit at least it will be with USB-C and not lightning.
