Should I buy Mass Effect: Andromeda?

Ok, so Mass Effect 1 & 2 are some of my favorite games. I was a hardcore WoW player in X360 era and I mostly remember two other games besides WoW - Bioshock and Mass Effect. Finished both games on Insanity.

Now, I never finished ME3, I think I probably played less than 5 hours of it, don't really know why.

So now both the Legendary Edition and Andromeda are on sale. Mind you I will play them exclusively on Steam Deck (why does this still have the shit EA Launcher) - is Andromeda really as bad? I played maybe 1-2 hours of it years ago, remember the fighting being better than in the past games ; remember stupid scanning for no fucking reason ; remember stupid enemies and that shit allied race of some pink bipedal whales.

Fuck, I should just play the Legendary Edition, right?

Andromeda was the absolute nadir of the Mass Effect franchise, it was so bad, that planned DLC was turned into a book instead (which might still be available on Amazon I think) it did more damage to the franchise than any-bad ending to Mass Effect 3 did...and it took the Legendary Edition to restore the franchise's top-tier reputation

I liked it. It has fantastic combat. Some decent story moments and a good ending.

Other than that, its a mid 7/10 game. The biggest thing is the combat which is fucking excellent. And there is a lot of it. Exploration is ubisoft tier. Nothing special.

If you didnt like the first 2 hours then dont bother with it.

I played Andromeda and Inquisition back to back. They are essentially the same game, indeed Andromeda plays better and in some ways has a better story.

I really don't rate the other ME games at all, so I have an anti-opinion compared to the majority here.

Andromeda can be pretty good with about 100 overhaul mods.

You need to use mods that overhaul the following: crafting, blueprints/lab, inventory, research, profiles, squadmates, abilities/powers, enemy spawns, enemy balance, stores, skill points, perks, weapons, armours. (surely i am forgetting some)

Do all that and its an ok game, if youre not willing to do that then its trash and you should stay the hell away.

People swear the gameplay is good.

Everything else blows.

Just weigh your decision on whatever's most important to you.

An impressively awful game. It's almost essential just to see how not to make a compelling story, it's like running through Constantine wire to appreciate how sharp it is.

As a general rule, you should focus on playing the best reviewed and most exciting games in your backlog and wishlist. Don't fall into the trap of feeling like you need to collect all the games in a series if you know you are unlikely to play them, or some of them are bad. Focus your time on playing the best games.

I love the Mass Effect trilogy and I'd recommend playing part 3 first. It's the better game. That beging said, Andromeda isn't a bad game. It just isn't up to par with its predecessors.

Exactly this.

Andromeda isn't that bad but its easily the worst in the franchise. You should instead play the Legendary Edition, and complete 3 (which has one of the best DLCs around). There is some fun that can be had with Andromeda, as the combat is fun and it retains a lot of the usual Mass Effect qualities. But it also leaves something to be desired.

Andromeda plays well, but everything else is just weak compared to the original trilogy. You're missing nothing by skipping it, IMO.

I thought the gameplay was good but the story, which is what I'm really in for with a BioWare game, is just bland as hell. It's like eating a rice cake. So if you like rice cakes then you'll love it.

I've personally enjoyed it about as much as any other Mass Effect game and the combat in particular felt like a step ahead. It's a little goofy for sure and unintentionally so, but I don't think it's as bad as some people suggest.

It kind of depends what you want to play it for.

If you want to play it for strong characters and dialogue and storyline then no. If you wanna play it for fun combat, great controls and decent missions, then yes. Either way, it does suffer from the repetitive open world bullshit everybody is already tired of. It’s a good looking game, has a pretty great soundtrack, and it is fun to explore some fun locations, but there are too many Ubisoft style side missions and outpost etc. If you go in with lowered expectations then I think you can enjoy it, it’s so cheap these days honestly just bite the bullet. Worst case scenario you’ll have lost $5 to $10. The multiplayer is also pretty decent, not as good as ME3‘s multiplayer but still pretty fun.

I avoided it because of how poorly it was received, eventually I traded a game with someone else for it, and I had a pretty good time with it. It’s weak compared to the original trilogy, no doubt. But it’s still a decent game.

I play Legendary edition right now, I am about halfway in ME2. This trilogy is so good. Even 3. It has the best gameplay.

As for Andromeda, I quit about halfway through. The game is very dull. The combat I have to admit, its solid. You can combo and do air dashes, also quite a bit of build variety in here. But thats all there is to it. The combat is trapped into a very boring game that has ubisoft tier busywork and a story that really doesn't go anywhere. Andromeda was never boosted for consoles, so it runs pretty bad. On PC it might be a bit better but its still the same sleep inducing game.

You can tell that a great game was in there somewhere, but they fumbled it.

I morbidly enjoyed it. It was like watching Dexter: New Blood - the franchise was already dead to me but there were enough parts where I remembered why I had once loved it so much.

I gave up on it after 5 hours. Even after all the patches.
It's not worth it. And there are so many better games to play.

In my professional opinion? Buying a budget box of tampons and hiding them in your coworkers desk drawers will be more entertaining.

Gunfights are fine, but nothing deep that could justify sinking 40 hours in it.

The game is devoid of any charm. It's generic game-design and abysmal writing on top of it.

I played it, and finished it, after it was... Patched... Finished...
I really enjoyed it. Clearly not as good as the original trilogy but it evolved into a game with some enjoyable aspects eventually.

Andromedas problems is that it EA forced Frostbite onto their entire company when it's been used by one studio for one style of game then expanded onto sports, racing, etc.

As it stands after all those patches and stuff I would say it's a decent experience

No codex narration = pile of shit.

Seriously though. Bad writing, bad voice acting, bad story, bad animations, awful characters, decent combat with decent movement, unbelievably boring quests(including vaults). Just an overall boring soulless game.

I bought it on sale for $5 and really enjoyed it. Great combat.

The story was alright, easy to follow, nothing too offensive for my tastes.

I say give it a go. If you don't like it you can always drop it.

People calling the game trash are objectively wrong. The game has it's share of problems but the gameplay and movement is fantastic. It's worth it, especially for that price
