South of Midnight (Compulsion Games - Xbox/PC/GamePass) - First Previews Going Live

SOme of you said the jerky animations is only for cutscenes but Im looking at the gameplay and its there as well, the jerky low fps animations that spider-verse uses and spider-man 2 if you use that specific skin on miles. Fucking trash. I hate that shit. Stylized choice my ass.
maybe that is a factor as to why these previews are hands-off. the first sentence from the IGN preview is Red Flags galore.

Probably because it is seemingly woke. I am NOT happy about this.
it is woke. At least by my definition (using DEI as a marketing beat). And we know Sweet Baby Inc. was the consultancy company in charge of "authentic representation". odds are not in its favor.

Big oof:

"Compulsion Games says that while they expect gameplay to be engaging, it isn't nearly as much of a focus as the story, music, and other elements they've clearly put the lion's share of work into. Instead, they're keeping levels relatively short for a ten-ish hour story and putting all of their chips into South of Midnight's exceptional presentation and worldbuilding".
thank god for gp

Let me fix it.
welp time to masturbate GIF

This is really getting to be old.
it doesn't help that it has become a business model for the consultancy companies themselves, but media and influencers/commentators too. I think this is why it is so important that this kind of entertainment continues to flop.

Is the community manager that hates white make gamers still there?

well acording to some ex devs as soon as SBI got involved they changed the main character from white to black

The pearl clutching over a potential race swap, in this particular game, is so bizarre to me. I grew up in the deep South listening to handed down stories about haints and spirits and all manner of spooky magical things from people who really believed in them. I had relatives who would pour rings of salt around their beds at night to keep evil spirits away. From everything I've experienced in my life the main character in this game being a young black woman makes more sense to me than this antebellum Disney princess render here.

I think that's what a lot of the kneejerk reactions about the game miss. Thematically the character we see in the game now makes sense. I don't know why some people are upset by it.

The game may end up being crap, but it won't be simply because of the race of the main character.

They're using such a stylized art-style that it probably doesn't make sense to use UE5's heavy features.

But UE4 means the PC version's probably gonna be plagued with stutters.

?

The frame rate is 'normal' in game play, the stop-motion effect is only in the cut-scenes.

Shouldn't be in it at all. It's horrific and hurts my eyes. Plus id never support a game made by someone who said white male gamers were a mistake. Clear prejudice.

Finally got to watch it. This was like a full direct basically. 30 min documentary. The art style is much cooler than I was expecting. The south architecture and swamp environments look really good. You can kind of tell that a lot of it was based on real life models and miniatures. The crochet / southern lace weaving powers look sick. My expectations were pretty mid going into this but it looks like it could be awesome.

Jury is still out on the story but I like everything I've seen so far.

Oh and Olivier doing OST is phenomenal news. Dude is always great.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

That's fine, if you have an issue like that you're in your rights to boycott the game.

Just wanted to clarify the point that the stop motion thing is just in cut-scenes.

Game looks pretty good, but man that framerate on the cutscenes makes me have a conniption fit. I could never play this.

The world and setting are unique, which I like. And is the art style when you are looking at screenshots.
But that stop motion style animation even during gameplay looks awful IMO. That's the sort of thing that can look cool if you apply it only to specific elements (like a specific character, or type of enemy or visual element in the world), but not when you use it for everything.

Another game that will fail commercially, but I might try it in gamepass, the stop motion stuff looks interesting.

The environments do look nice.

The game lacks a hook. I feel like it would have more appeal if it had a darker, voodoo/Lovecraftian vibe. It looks too storybook for my tastes.

Also, the premise sounds lame as fuck.

As she confronts enemy creatures known as Haints and untangles her family’s past, Hazel seeks to reweave the tears in the Grand Tapestry and find a place that feels like home.

Love letter to the south, gothic southern fantasy. That's the hook.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Interview with the Vampire, but their own spin on it. Much more swamp and Appalachian terrain as well.

It depends. Was the original vision/design the white "princess" character? And then SBI was brought in and they nuked someone's creative idea for the sake of DEI? That's where the problem lies. Let the creators create things. If we need more representation, let's get people of varying backgrounds in the position to make the types of games they want to make.

At this point I'm not sure it matters what the original intention was because people are going to believe what they want to believe. All I know is that this character makes sense for this game. Compare this with the new Saints Row. None of the main characters made sense and it was clear what had happened. I don't think it's as clear with South of Midnight.

Artistically and visually, this is shaping up to be incredible.

The game play looks standard, nothing out of the box, platforming and combat with powers.

Yeah, sadly the gameplay looks average as funk. Hopefully we get a good soundtrack out of it, at least.

i agree with you , a black protagonist fits in that world but the problem was not the race swap , the problem is that the swap was made for diversity ( the community manager's words not mine )

they could have just said " hey we are making a game about black people folklore and its only natural to have a black protagonist" instead of " cis white males shouldnt be the majority , we need more black people "

The stop motion effects can be turned off, I don't see any woke elements and the game looks fantastic in concept design and visual sense.

Absolute day 1.
