The comments were made on Discord, not on any sort of Nintendo owned space. Afaik this came to light after their private chats leaked, although they also sent some racist stuff to other players.
Racism is not cool, but Nintendo's reaction to this would be like checking the Twitter post history of every member of the Spanish Eurocup team and removing the win from them the moment you find something not PC.
I think it's too much, thought police and all that, but hey it's their tournament so they can do whatever they want.

Nintendo has been known to use an iron fist in regard to their rules and regulations. They are a private company from Japan. They do not care about other companies' policies above their own. They do not care about homebrew and modding scenes. They do not care about the gaming community's freedoms. So this part shouldn't surprise anyone when it comes to Nintendo:
From everything I've known, from content creators to tournament players to convention owners, the unspoken rule is that if you are dealing with Nintendo at all for any monetary gain, you tread very carefully around Nintendo because they are the shot callers in every deal.
Why play with fire when everyone has warned you what happens when you play with it?

It won't backfire and no one important will want to touch this due to such scathing evidence of racism and it being Nintendo. It's a bad look to use this specific case as an example of a good defense for the American amendment of freedom of speech.

Legally speaking I doubt they can withhold the winnings, but they know who they're dealing with and are daring them to lawyer up. Attorneys' fees alone are worth more than the amount in winnings and they'd rather send the message that they stand vociferously against the conduct, even if it means they have to push the legal envelope.

I don't think they've taken the cash from the original winners, only removed their banner from the game and took the title from them. But not the cash.
Probably the reason why they don't name a new winner, it would cost them twice the amount of money they originally meant to spend.
