You don't see how ridiculous that sounds at all huh? Guess its completely impossible for this genre or Bethesda to produce anything less right? Imagine saying this shit after playing Morrowind but before Fallout 76 came out? Lmfao

Final Fantasy and Horizon were heavily touted as near certain GotY and 90+ titles as well. Getting 88 doesn't by itself mean any of those games were mediocre. Although they might be depending on your personal gaming taste, but that can apply to a 96 title as well.

Can you be disappointed that Starfield didn't get a 90+? Sure. Does it make sense to claim it's mediocre based on a 88? No.

I'm not going to play "weight of an entire platform", I'm going to play Starfield. Which by almost all accounts is a great game.

I'm sure a ton of people are sad it's not going to be the game to proclaim Phil as the future son of god. That really doesn't matter when you judge the game on its own merits.

88/100 means a great game in aggregate, personal enjoyment will of course vary.

I just find such abysmal falls from grace compelling watching to be perfectly honest and I saw it coming from a mile away... that the game was getting hyped to high-heaven from a select group while everyone else was yawning.

It's hilarious how some people are painting an 88 as some kind of great achievement here from a game in development for 8+ years and from a studio/pub that cost MS almost $8B to acquire instead of being realistic that the score achieved here is far, far below expectations for a game so hyped.

I said it before that MS needed anything above 90+ to consider it a BIG win.

An 87/100 score is extremely good, but the hype for this game was extremely high for a lot of people waiting on a high review score.

Perhaps. Personally I think it would have added to the immersion, but doesn't matter now. Hopefully I'll be able to get into space in tonights gaming session and have a better idea how it works. But it sounds like it may take a few hours before that happens in the game.

Different games have different expectations. If GTA 6 was rated a 88 everybody would be disappointed. Starfield didn't quite have those expectations, but they were expected to contend for GOTY alongside TOTK and BG3. An 88 doesn't do that

There wouldn’t be so much negativity if this game wasn’t so hyped up over the last 5/6 years or so and hailed as Xbox’s saviour.
For BGS to make nothing for 8 years and then release a game that’s not even a GOTY contender is kind disappointing.

88 is a fantastic score. Anyone claiming otherwise is trolling...

But there's a broader conversation that's been happening since the game was announced. A lot of that conversation has been captured right here on gaf. To ignore that conversation is to stick your head in the sand. Starfield being rated as the 7th best game on XBOX behind The Witcher and Street Fighter simply doesn't live up to the unfair expectations placed, largely by XB guys, on the ip

I've spoken about this at length. 87 is a fantastic score.

The hope for some MS comeback with a 95+ game such as Zelda to boost sales momentum shattered.

The game is good but not great according to reviews. It's not what MS or their fans are expecting after the drought quality 1st party games. It's game over for any "comeback".

Again, that doesn't make it "shitty." It's just not what you would want it to be. Shitty would be that you use menus to traverse and then it sends you to the wrong location, or takes actual light-years to get you there.

I wasn't very interested in the game until these reviews came out, and my opinion changed because I'm glad that I can just zip to where I want to go via menus. Obviously all of this is subjective, but I feel like people use extremes too much these days. There are many more words out there that can describe how you feel about the system that don't basically suggest the worst of the worst.

The copy and paste dungeons are rather ridicolous as well, the game is in full development for 8 years and even just hand craft dungeons they should have easily produce 500+ hand crafted dungeons and not copy and paste so many of them. Seems like it's even worse than oblivion in this regard which is pretty insane.

88 is a great score per se.
But expectations and context play an important role.
This game was supposed to be the big gun out of a 7 billions acquisition and it was expected by many to be a new Skyrim moment made exclusive to push the whole Microsoft ecosystem (subscriptions, consoles..).
It doesn't seem it will be that, just a good game ala Fallout 4.

Why would whoever reviewed this at IGN US decide to drop it by a point or two because some UK outlets didn’t get a review code? Why?

It’s just bizarre that you can’t process that different critics hold different opinions because they’re just people and people disagree.
