That was a pretty strong SOP, and one of the better ones they've had in the past year or so easily.

At first I thought Saros was Cory Balrog's new game, and jokingly said it might've been Housemarque....how'd that joke turn out right!? xD. It looks really cool though; loved the Vishnu/Hindu influences and the darker atmosphere. This might sound weird but it gave me some DND: Dark Sun vibes if you know anything about that side of DnD.

The futuristic GTA-like game (who's funding that again, is it Tencent?) looks good; gunplay seems fast and the premise of GTA meets Blade Runner meets buddy cop should make for an entertaining story. I also enjoyed that Stellar Blade-ish action-adventure game (Tides of Annihilation); sexy protagonist and seems to be some neat old-school side-scrolling platform sections in there as part of the game loop, alongside general platforming & combat. The Victorian theme was also a dash of nice flavor and should make it distinct enough from Stellar Blade's sci-fi/cyberpunk vibe.

I thought that Oddworld-like game was funny, because of how much it reminded me of that series except with an octopus. Didn't Housemarque make a game with an octopus on PS4? I forgot its name, but I'm also reminded of that. The game with the claymation style looks really cool and I'm glad it's not exclusively PSVR2, so you can play it on a regular PS5. The new Onimusha looks interesting, tho maybe it was just me but the actual combat animations seem very weighty almost to the point of being a tad slow? It's been ages since I've played an Onimusha game though, maybe it's just always been that way.

Also interesting to see how much SEGA stuff was on display here; looks like the benefits from Xbox-led marketing/advertising (or really, lack of benefits) ran out. I'm expecting they're gonna be doing a lot more reveals and marketing with PlayStation & Nintendo going forward because let's be honest, those platforms are going to account for at least 80-85% of SEGA game sales (same with Atlus) on console at least. Better to maximize your marketing dollars where most of your customers are at; I'd include PC in there but there aren't really a lot of PC gaming events and I guess SEGA/Atlus doing Day 1 Steam releases for their games is advertising enough.

I knew those Parasite Eve rumors were likely BS so glad I didn't take the bait; also funny to see none of the Xbox stuff like Hellblade II or South of Midnight were there. Those games are likely 100% coming to PS5 at some point, I'm just glad show time wasn't taken up with announcements of late ports, especially for a "game" like HB2 which is just universally considered a big disappointment. Also interesting to see no PC ports announced, tho considering rumors that isn't too surprising after all and I think that's for the best. Sure the new Supermassive game is going to PC but that's done through a 3P, and XDEV. Again I think for PC SIE only really need to support it with most of whatever GAAS titles they put out going forward, so that'd include stuff like Marathon I take it.

But not every GAAS needs to go to Steam, and needless to say the non-GAAS stuff doesn't need to be going there at all or at least for (literally) several years, maybe with exceptions for non-internal stuff (i.e XDEV-collabed games like the new Supermassive game) or collections of remastered old PS1/PS2 type games (e.g Mark of Kri Remastered Collection). And for some of the remastered old game collections I can see it being a decent idea to bring some of those to Nintendo and Xbox platforms, but I'm talking quite small stuff. Like hey maybe a re-release of Jersey Devil on Switch 2 could do pretty well.

Overall I'd give that SOP a 9/10 and, so far 👍, it's the best gaming event of the year. Tho there hasn't been much else so far besides the Xbox Direct, and I expect Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct will supplant the SOP for title of Best Gaming Event of the Year (up to that point, anyhow).

Not to be a dick, but why the hell would anyone care about from where the games are coming? It makes no sense to me.

The primary purpose of these SOP shows is to spotlight the next quarter, with the odd long-term reveal sprinkled in to introduce them to the market. I made a post describing the format earlier this evening... and guess who won the pony? I did.

At the end of the day these are mainly trailer collections, so if a title is sufficiently high profile that it can stand alone... then there's basically nothing to be gained from their inclusion. They might as well just issue a press release to the major sites, the PS Blog and then upload to YT. The same thing gets accomplished. Obvious example is something like Death Stranding 2, Kojima is going to hype it by himself way more effectively than one of these shows will.

Which is fundamentally why I found all the negativity so astoundingly retarded. Back in the day E3 and the other big trade fairs were significant because it was a huge one-stop-shop for information and reveals that you wouldn't otherwise get. These days with all the significant advanced marketing being internet-based, and thus 24/7 365 days a year, the significance of showcases is diminished to almost nothing.

Especially now that Xbox has basically retreated behind Game Pass, and Nintendo is yet to ramp-up the hype on Switch 2, its not like Playstation has any competition, and thus audience to court away from their offerings. The whole "big show"deal is redundant.
Well they are doing 'eye drops' announcements on SoPs of a game one at a time...

This generation has been weird and we know the stuff in the back-end related to Live Service hasn't been going well. Put that in with the Insomniac leak in which we never heard again about Wolverine and the supposed Venom game and it's a recipe for disaster for expectation for these events.

The only thing we need to be questioning from this State of Not Play is... Why the fuck does Sonic need a kart?!

Personally from a Playstation state of play id like to see at least a couple of big Playstation studio titles. A deep dive and release date for Yotei would have been nice, a gamplay trailer and beta announce for Marathon, at least a few snippets of gameplay from Housemarks new title or Intergalactic. Hell would it hurt for another Wolverine trailer at this point ? or a Venom Trailer?

Maybe im weird, but thats what i expect. Not all them of course but a couple would have been nice.

We got one: Saros from Housemarque.

That's their new single-player game, it's said to be AAA, and it's coming next year (sooner than I thought). And it looks cool. They'll show off gameplay probably later this year, I'd think potentially at the TGAs or early 2026.

It's too soon for Intergalatic gameplay considering the game was only revealed barely two months ago, and isn't set to release until 2027 (likely). We probably get gameplay for that in early 2026, but could be sooner.

Its not my thing at all i was just using it as an example of what i expect from a SOP.
No, I'm just saying that it just doesn't exist; which is what people should assume for anything that's not been announced.
I mean, a lot of people got excited when they saw that it was planned for 2025, yet they were not aware of the later leaks that put it as a 2027 game due to expanded scope, or so was said.
At this point, how can you even be sure if this is still a thing in development, even?

Yeah i really liked Returnal so excited for that but no gameplay, just like they finsished the last SOP, with an "in engine trailer"

What about Fairgames gameplay, gummie bears reveal? Marathon gameplay? More Ghost of Yotei ? They have stuff cooking, tough to get excited about stuff thats likely coming end of gen.

I've got minimal interest in live service stuff so their lack of inclusion is a bonus to me! Wolverine is going to be a big holiday season release so I'd expect it to be revealed nearer the time.

And sorry, but I have to disagree with the expectations thing; as I explained in a post earlier the purpose of these shows is not that of a major keynote where a roadmap for the next 2 or more years is laid out. Its mainly to spotlight the next quarter and a half, with a sprinkling of long-term reveals on top to add a bit of scale.

If Sony wanted to do a blow-out of all their major first party product for the next couple of years they wouldn't package it as a State Of Play. Period.

If some of the audience are too thick to wrap their heads around it after nearly 6 years of these mini-shows I'm sure they don't give a damn. I know I don't!

Can somebody save me a bit of searching - what was the name of the first person perspective game that was like stop-motion Tim Burton stuff with weird creatures and a charge-up gun?

I agree with your point, but the drip feeding of info regarding 1st party will only make the “core” crowd more frustrated.

Looks like they going for multiple events this year and if PS6 is aimed at 2028 (I don’t believe in 27” due to wafer price and some AMD inside info I have on semi-custom roadmap) then we might see their plans for the next 2 years in display

Was already excited for Monster Hunter. The Shinobi game looks cool.

Am I alone in feeling like most of these AAA post-apocalyptic fantasy games from new studios are giving me major generic vibes? None of them look terrible, but none of them look that interesting either. Like all of these are big fancy UE 5 AAA looking games that look like they will ultimately flop at market and result in the closure of the studio. It just feels like there's zero focus on gameplay innovation right now, and instead it's artists driving design.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT GAMING

Well, again, Saros is 2026; when SIE do game reveals they always start with a CG trailer so nothing's changed there vs. 10 years ago or even longer. What's more that's basically how everyone first reveals a game. When it's further along, they do another showing with gameplay, then a deep dive gameplay. Then more gameplay stuff, press previews, and then the game itself is released.

We don't even know if Saros is H1 2026 or H2 2026 because it could be another 12-20 or so months before release. So there's plenty of time to show actual gameplay. Intergalatic is probably 2027 at the earliest, so I wouldn't expect gameplay until sometime 2026.

Fairgame$, Marathon...honestly I'm glad they didn't spend time at the SOP for GAAS titles. It's well-known that the GAAS gambit has kinda bit SIE in the ass outside of stuff like Helldivers 2 and GT7 (tho that's not GAAS in the sense that it is primarily single-player focused); I think this SOP was a good time to reset some messaging and that's a major reason it was dominated by Japanese & Asian games for instance.

If stuff like Fairgame$ and Marathon are further out, they can save gameplay reveals until then. They probably want to wait until beta testing is ready before showing gameplay so that they can do a beta drop to swiftly build off hype from a gameplay reveal preview.

As for Ghost of Yotei, I'm guessing they're saying gameplay reveal for closer to its release. I thought it was going to be a H1 2025 game but it could be a H2 release instead. July-August potentially?

Oh boy.

This was bad. Like very bad. Will there be any AAA sony inhouse game this year?

Or is this just another year of third party games?

I am amazed by the short attention span of takes like this. You lot were saying the same thing last year...then Astro Bot came out and overshadowed almost everything else aside from Helldivers 2.

Truth is even on an off-season SIE are generally stronger than most other publishers in terms of quality output. The only ones who can arguably outdo their output on an off-season with strong confidence (90% or better) are Nintendo, Take-Two/Rockstar and...that is about it.

With everyone else it's less a guarantee, and yes that includes Microsoft and yes that's also including the fact they purchased Zenimax & ABK. Tho if you're talking purely sales numbers then I suppose COD is always something you can count on (even if BO3 severely underperformed and showed that dependability isn't always there).

The thinking behind it seems pretty sound to me; Sony don't want to shift units just during peak periods, they want to do it all year round. So they do these quarterly mini-showcases to tap the gas for the next few months, by which time there'll be another SOP to continue the cycle.

The funny part for me is the way people act like what they show is all they have! And then they bitch about what's not shown, even when there's no doubt they'd bitch about the exact same titles were they to be shown!
And of course above all else, there's no point in promoting titles that aren't going to be available for years to come or or arriving the exact same time as a bunch of other stuff!

The bottom line is that a successful showing at any presentation tends to be utterly meaningless in the long run. Classic example of this being Hellblade 2, which really wowed everyone when it was shown the first few times by Xbox, and ended up making basically no impression whatsoever on launch, and literally was forgotten within a month...

They're spewing DEI because a game with Hindu mythology in it has an Indian male lead?

Man I am glad I smart people conceived me, that's all I'll say 🤣

That one too.
People will scream DEI for literally anything and everything.

If you want to complain about things like Veilguard where the writing is just so stupid about the whole trans/non binary/inclusion thing, that's an absolutely valid point to make. Literally ham fisting dialogue to grandstand and that to, in such a shit way. That has nothing to do with DEI, that's just shit writing.

But complaining that the game is too purple or pink because of DEI to me is just wild.

What, that they aren't Sony fanboys?
Because since the start of Ps from ps1 era up to now, PS fans, always expect allot of exclusives and that is the reason, we buy PS console. Hulst and Ryan killed sony game development with live service focus and that pc porting strategy.

Further evidence today that too many years and teams were wasted on GAAS trash.

This is all we have coming now. So is Cory Balrog/Barlog whatever the fuck his name
is game vaporware?

You know its bad when they are taking time out of a state of play to show playstation plus catalog game updates
yes. cory's game is fucked. He rebooted GOW in 4 years. It's been almost 7 years since he shipped that game and still has shown nothing. Nothing.
These guys are all cooked. Neil, Cory, Ken levine, Kojima. Ken took what 12 years to make a bioshock clone he swore he would never make? Neil spent the last four years palling around with hollywood stars while his studio slaved away at a small teaser with no gameplay. 4 years and only one cutscene to show for it. Kojima took 3.5 years to make DS1 from scratch with no studio, no people, no engine, and this time around he took 6 years and still hasnt shown much gameplay.

All these guys are dinosaurs who peaked years ago and are dragging the rest of their studios along with them. I highly doubt the workers at the studio are sitting there doing nothing. they are clearly working but these guys at the top dont have their shit together and cant get a game out in time.

it took Sucker Punch 6 years to make GoT from scratch and they wasted a year on a new ip that was cancelled. so 5 years and yet the sequel takes 6 years and we dont have any gameplay footage months before launch?

I remember the GOW2 documentary and how stressed cory got because he had to get the gameplay demo done in time for E3. He had less than a year to do it and he did. Ok, that wasnt healthy. so take 2 years. Or 3 years. or rest up and take 4. but SEVEN FUCKING YEARS???

Fuck off. Resign, and let new blood make video games.

I'm genuinely surprised so many people seemed to hate the SOP. Did some of you watch a different show? Did you watch it with a broken monitor?

Find it hard to believe some people didn't see a SINGLE game they'd care about out of everything shown. Like, your taste in games has to be extremely narrow & I'd argue boring (or at least super monotonous) to have hated every reveal. Couldn't be me, man. Couldn't be me.

Dont want to step on your dick but i fully disagree.

Being a sony consumer the last 30 years i have never seen such a week, none existing sony first party output. Never.

ITs been now more than 4 years. Nothing.
Got the pro. For what i dont even know.

Nah man sorry but i go by the last 30 years and this gen is utter trash. From both.

This gen will fly by in no time and what then? Most of the games shown are still cross gen.
Returnal sequel in 2026? The fuck?

Come on man

It was a waste of time because we already knew most of the games. I already preorderd some of them, why would I bother to watch those again. It's the opposite of exciting.

The PS4 era was shitted on during its first 4 years due to a lack of 1st party games. The games that ignited the generation didn’t release until after that.

I don’t know that I’ve disagreed more with a post. lol.

9/10?

Tons of reused gameplay footage from Monster Hunter and Metal Gear Solid Delta, lots of games we have already seen a lot of recently. Dedicating a portion of the show to highlighting PlayStation classic games that are coming to PS+, a spotlight for a Stellar Blade collab, any time dedicated to Borderlands 4…

They didn’t need to showcase every Sony 1st party title but the sentiment from fans for the last 12+ months is that not enough is being shown from PlayStation studios and there has been far too much emphasis on PS4 remakes. So you resolve that by highlighting a Days Gone Remake? A game that most people ignored when it first came out…

Not everything shown was bad (I’m looking forward to Saros; Returnal is one of my favorite games of all time) but this marketing team has had one blunder after another, show after show. This is another added to the list…

That was bad. Clearly the live service push has tied up resources. They must be so glad Xbox has imploded. It's hard to believe but the best games coming for PlayStation might be Xbox games because Forza 5 and Indiana Jones is better than that rubbish.

Youre being a Sony simp instead of looking at the situation as a whole.

They have clearly shit the bed this gen from a 1st party standpoint
You can easily check out my rating on the SoP in the first page of the thread.
What you all are complaining still doesn't make any sense; "what were those developers even doing!?" working on a game that you all are somehow forgetting it exists.

Also people complaining about lack of 1P there...Saros was literally there! Did you expect every 1P game to get revealed at the first SOP of 2025? We got ten months left in the year; plenty more time for other 1P reveals and 3P exclusives.

Like yes, we know there's some part of their internal flow that got screwed up by the GAAS crap, but I'm looking at the positives here. No PC port announcements. No 1P GAAS reveals. Some cool-looking new 3P games. A pretty wicked 1P reveal (Saros), and so on and so on.

Bruv I've starting to see why these companies try avoiding putting on shows. A lot of "gamers" don't know anything or even what they want 🤣. Sucks for us who can appreciate good stuff from these things without trashing them with hyperbolic takes, tho. Or at least put out constructive criticism when warranted.

It's funny because usually i'm on the hating side (at least more often). But this time i agree, i felt like i was trapped in a different dimension. People were less hysterical for the terrible Playstation Showcase where they announced their 10 GaaS.

Now i understand the people that come to defend a show that i thought was terrible beyond any doubt and that probably feel misunderstood.

New IP, midbudget games, concrete release date, gameplay, the show had all of that. It's not going to change the whole generation ofc but what the fuck were people expecting ?

lol — there are maybe 2 SOPs left this year and one of them will be dedicated to Ghost of Yokei. So at the rate the marketing team have been going, we will see everything PlayStation studios have been cooking 10 years after the world has come to an end.

As poorly run as Xbox is, their output/marketing over the past couple of years has been much more consistent than Sony’s, and Nintendo always has some 1st party surprises that get people talking.

There was 1 (one) game here that isn’t day 1 on PC. Lost Soul Aside and Stellar Blade are both published by Sony on Steam. What exactly are you celebrating?

Sega trades horses when it comes to marketing contracts.

Last year, Sonic x Shadow Generations had a PS marketing deal last year and PS even got exclusive bonuses too.

They pick and choose depending on the title and what it needs.
