That was a pretty strong SOP, and one of the better ones they've had in the past year or so easily.
At first I thought Saros was Cory Balrog's new game, and jokingly said it might've been Housemarque....how'd that joke turn out right!? xD. It looks really cool though; loved the Vishnu/Hindu influences and the darker atmosphere. This might sound weird but it gave me some DND: Dark Sun vibes if you know anything about that side of DnD.
The futuristic GTA-like game (who's funding that again, is it Tencent?) looks good; gunplay seems fast and the premise of GTA meets Blade Runner meets buddy cop should make for an entertaining story. I also enjoyed that Stellar Blade-ish action-adventure game (Tides of Annihilation); sexy protagonist and seems to be some neat old-school side-scrolling platform sections in there as part of the game loop, alongside general platforming & combat. The Victorian theme was also a dash of nice flavor and should make it distinct enough from Stellar Blade's sci-fi/cyberpunk vibe.
I thought that Oddworld-like game was funny, because of how much it reminded me of that series except with an octopus. Didn't Housemarque make a game with an octopus on PS4? I forgot its name, but I'm also reminded of that. The game with the claymation style looks really cool and I'm glad it's not exclusively PSVR2, so you can play it on a regular PS5. The new Onimusha looks interesting, tho maybe it was just me but the actual combat animations seem very weighty almost to the point of being a tad slow? It's been ages since I've played an Onimusha game though, maybe it's just always been that way.
Also interesting to see how much SEGA stuff was on display here; looks like the benefits from Xbox-led marketing/advertising (or really, lack of benefits) ran out. I'm expecting they're gonna be doing a lot more reveals and marketing with PlayStation & Nintendo going forward because let's be honest, those platforms are going to account for at least 80-85% of SEGA game sales (same with Atlus) on console at least. Better to maximize your marketing dollars where most of your customers are at; I'd include PC in there but there aren't really a lot of PC gaming events and I guess SEGA/Atlus doing Day 1 Steam releases for their games is advertising enough.
I knew those Parasite Eve rumors were likely BS so glad I didn't take the bait; also funny to see none of the Xbox stuff like Hellblade II or South of Midnight were there. Those games are likely 100% coming to PS5 at some point, I'm just glad show time wasn't taken up with announcements of late ports, especially for a "game" like HB2 which is just universally considered a big disappointment. Also interesting to see no PC ports announced, tho considering rumors that isn't too surprising after all and I think that's for the best. Sure the new Supermassive game is going to PC but that's done through a 3P, and XDEV. Again I think for PC SIE only really need to support it with most of whatever GAAS titles they put out going forward, so that'd include stuff like Marathon I take it.
But not every GAAS needs to go to Steam, and needless to say the non-GAAS stuff doesn't need to be going there at all or at least for (literally) several years, maybe with exceptions for non-internal stuff (i.e XDEV-collabed games like the new Supermassive game) or collections of remastered old PS1/PS2 type games (e.g Mark of Kri Remastered Collection). And for some of the remastered old game collections I can see it being a decent idea to bring some of those to Nintendo and Xbox platforms, but I'm talking quite small stuff. Like hey maybe a re-release of Jersey Devil on Switch 2 could do pretty well.
Overall I'd give that SOP a 9/10 and, so far
, it's the best gaming event of the year. Tho there hasn't been much else so far besides the Xbox Direct, and I expect Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct will supplant the SOP for title of Best Gaming Event of the Year (up to that point, anyhow).
