Target not selling physical Xbox games anymore?

Just got back from Target, this was the Xbox Series game section. Has there been any news of Target not selling physical Xbox games anymore? Sorry if this is old news.

They still had plenty of PS5 and Switch games. On an end cap they had Black Ops 6 but that was the only Xbox game in the entire electronics section.

If I'm not mistaken, both Target and Walmart have or were in the process of significantly reducing their Xbox sections. Not sure if the other consoles will be reduced, but possibly PS5.

There just isn't enough demand for physical releases. I seem to recall reading about them starting to do this.

I think this all started around sometime last year?

I thought both were reducing physical media inventory big time. This includes DVD/Blue Rays as well. I think Best Buy is doing something similar.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I noticed this maybe a month or two ago - the Xbox section at a couple different targets were basically vacant. They have the cards with the codes for digital copies, but that's it. Playstation and Switch still have plenty of presence on the shelves.

Only story I could find was this, claiming they were reducing physical media but games would be unaffected:

The last time I bought a game from Target was Harry Potter on PS5. Even back then they didn’t have much. It’s weird but I don’t ever look at games when I go to Walmart and Target. Back with the Wii and 360 I sure did.

lol yeah the reason I even went down this aisle was because my daughter was looking for a $25 Roblox card, but they only had $50 and $100 left by the main gift card section. This change could’ve happened months ago.

Crazy how you’ve got a similar selection at gas stations and grocery stores. I’ve bought a handful of Steam and PSN cards from Walgreens.

Troll the games are just selling so fast because of Xbox 2025 momentum.

Switch & PlayStation 5 games are not selling as fast

I wonder if this is just post-holiday restock/or inventory?

Sounds like the perfect time to open a gamestore? (I am legit thinking about this in a different way)

I went to Target tonight to grab a few things and decided to check out the gaming section. It looks like Target is no longer selling physical Xbox games, but continuing to sell both PS5 and Switch physical games. They also still have their dvd bluray section too. Before, the Xbox section and Switch section shared the same aisle. Walmart however still has an Xbox section with physical games.

Targets in Los Angeles still carry them, saw them a few days ago

you can verify this online, select in store pick up, select LA Central for example, then search for a popular game like GTA 5 or Madden or something

Sign of the times. Digital taking over physical. And pending the retailer, they might not even bother with that.

Costco is phasing out selling books. And I dont think they've sold DVD/BR movies in years. They used to have a big table of the best selling movies (recent releases, Marvel, Disney). I think that's all gone. I dont think any Costcos I've been to lately regularly even sell consoles or games for years. They will sell consoles on skids during Xmas. And at most they got a very limited number of games or gaming cash cards or sub plan vouchers right in the gift card section.

They used to have tables of disc games and game pads across all consoles.

Series S and the new standard Series X have no disc drive. The PS5 Pro doesn’t come with one either. You can add one obviously, but that’s extra cost and supposedly hard to get. Physical is gonna be dead by next gen (probably already said).

Costco is getting rid of physical furniture too, only digital couches now.

Offtopic an all digital PS6 means backwards compatibility is mostly dead too.

Not surprised, people voted for this. Next gen PS & Xbox won’t have physical outside a very very tiny selection.

Resetera (I know) but an interesting poll that wasn’t shit up, over 80% of people playing Avowed are playing through gamepass either on PC 36.4% or xbox 45.3%

Only 4% of respondents bought a physical copy….

The biggest issue from this will be the death of backwards compatibility on large collections. We might get physical next gen but it will be the last gen we do or really ‘own’ anything.

Gamers were full of shit (at least core gamers on forums bitching and moaning).

Remember back when everyone was complaining about digital games, system checks, online required connection etc.... Discs ruled for a laundry list of reasons from price, to trading/lending, to collectability, to lack of ownership of digital games if you read the TOS etc... There must had been 10 key reasons.

Fast forward to around 2020, and I think console gamers were already around 60-70% digital I think. Nintendo skewed lower, but PS/Xbox was higher. Now, it's got to be an even higher rate. Probably 80% I'd guess.

This is worthless because the "physical copy" of Avowed has no disc... not even the premium steel book comes with a disc. There effectively is no physical version of Avowed.

I think everyone should prepare for the next generation to be digital ONLY

Sony will probably go the PS5 Pro route with the disc drive separate and difficult to actually purchase one. Nintendo will be the last one with fairly prevalent physical game presence.

it looks like that for both xbox and ps over here. the writing is on the wall that next gen will be only digital.

Probably not the case for PlayStation. Xbox, sure. PS operates in more countries, many of which will not be ready to transition to digital by next gen. So I'm guessing there will definitely be a drive in PS6 and major publishers will continue to support it.

Sounds reasonable.

Next gen PS6 will probably be like PS5 Pro. One digital system with an optional disc drive attachment. Then again, PS5 Pro is a limited sales mid gen refresh, it might had not been worth doing a disc model.

You never know. Maybe PS6 will still have both systems available.

I do not believe there is a disc model for PS5 Pro. You have to buy the drive separately. I expect something similar next gen for PS6.

Remember the xbox One launch on here then Sony capitalised and rolled out their advertising campaign on inserting the disc? After that xbox rolled out the huge day one update to fix the issues people where so up in arms about, now no one even wants to purchase physical media anymore..

There’s effectively barely any physical additions of any games that will run without a launch update regardless of the disc or not, I truely think having the physical disc in the case would of made zero difference when over 80% of gamers are playing the title through gamepass. And that’s on a dedicated gamer forum for people who genuinely love to usually purchase a title physical or digitally along with steam players in the tiny remainder as well.

I think the real world adoption of people using gamepass to play the game and Microsoft titles would closer to around 90%

The next consoles will all be 100% disc less with a $100 option add on. The consumption next generation will be 90%+ digital across the board and that’s the final nail for physical.

This is not true. The rest, I agree with - but surely releasing a physical version without a disc hinders the point of the poll.

What would be the next big title from Microsoft they release on disc, Doom?

Would be interesting to get just a xbox/pc/ps5 pro numbers account of how many actually purchase the physical disc on this one…

Might be a poll worth making on launch and having PS5 regular in a poll within itself.

If it's an Xbox exclusive, you might as well forget the poll having any value. MS is abandoning physical and Gamepass has conditioned their market for years. Yes, I think the most meaningful poll of that sort would not only include Ps5, but Switch. Some truly multiplatform title with a simultaneous release. Even still, I don't think it will favor physical or anything.

A few months ago, Game Stops in my area removed Xbox stuff from the wall shelves and placed them on smaller racks in the middle of the store. Seems to be a trend for Xbox merch now with all retailers. We will probably see Best Buy doing this next, Walmart etc.

Wrong question.
The correct one is: why do you need games on disc at all when less than 10% of the audience buy them?

A lot of it is down to game preservation.

If you buy a disc with a full game on it then you own it for life, it can’t be taken away or modified as download games rely on server availability and an account.

My daughter loves unwrapping a new game on her birth day and Christmas morning, why would I want to take that away?

This is either a misunderstanding on your part, or revisionist history. I'm not sure which, so let me clarify.

Certainly there are people who love their physical media and disparage digital delivery at every opportunity because they (correctly) see it as a threat to physical media. I don't care about physical media at all, but I sympathize with those who do. This has been and always will be a concern for some portion of the player base.

But the real point where people were "complaining about digital games" was the original plan for the Xbox One. Microsoft's original plan was not a digital delivery system like Steam, and what the console storefronts have now. The Steam model of selling games digitally via a one-time-use key that binds a license to a users account actually existed On Xbox before the Xbox One. Microsoft and Sony started allowing full games to be purchased from their stores at the tail end of the PS3 and 360 generation. I was very active on multiple gaming forums and listening to gaming podcasts/YouTube at that time. All I saw were neutral or positive comments about more choice and options .

What Microsoft tried to do with the Xbox One was different. They wanted to sell you a disc that had a key. You would buy the game disc and enter the key while connected to the online service so it could bind that key to your account. That would be fine if it ended there. You could go offline because your local console knows that your account has a license to play the game as confirmed by the ecosystem's server. This is what we have with the current digital storefronts on all ecosystems.

The part that ruined Xbox One was they wanted to give Game Stop (and other used game retailers) a system for unbinding that key from your account so they could resell the disc. Why is that a problem for the user? If Microsoft can't be sure that I haven't sold the disc for the game I'm trying to play, and therefore I no longer have the key bound to my account, then they have to do regular check-ins with an authentication server to verify all the keys on my console are still valid. If they didn't, I could buy a disc, install the game and bind the key to my account while my console is online, then go offline, go sell the disc to Game Stop where they unbind that key from my account. I could then go home and keep playing the game with my console offline, even though I no longer have the key bound to my account. Just requiring the disc to be in the drive would leave the door open for piracy if/when people figured out how to duplicate those discs.

This is where the idea of a mandatory online check-in every 24 hours came into play. With the scenario above, if I sold the disc to Game Stop and they unbound the key from my account, I would only be able to play the game without having a valid key for less than 24 hours. Then the console would connect to the server, see that I don't have that key anymore, and the next time I try to boot that game I get a message telling me I don't have a valid license to play it. Presumably I would then be prompted to buy a new key from the digital store, at which point my ownership of that game would shift to a strictly digital license like we have now.

The idea that I should have to tolerate a mandatory daily check-in with the server just so Microsoft could help keep Game Stop in business was the giant "fuck you" moment so many of us had towards the Xbox brand. That also means I have to rely on Microsoft having the authentication servers up 100% of the time so I don't get stuck in a situation where I just can't play my games at all, because their infrastructure was down. At that time, we had seen multiple events where Azure had gone down for days at a time leaving their customers non-operational.

So yes, some people do complain about digital because they just like physical media better. But the Xbox One was a very special case where they had a different plan for "digital" than every other digital storefront. It was a terrible plan and I still can't believe the management team at Xbox at that time thought it would fly.

I think this has been the trend for most big box retailers here in the USA. I think bestbuy was the first to start this. It's just not games all physical media being dropped.

Seriously, nobody is playing 1.0 games these days. That's silly.
