Tim Rogers / Action Button Nearly 6 Hour Review of Tokimeki Memorial

Tokimemo 1 & 2 are pretty good strategy visual novel simulation anime girl dating games. I actually played through Tokimemo 2 while in college taking Japanese 102. I used a terrible PS1 screen capture card to grab screens and use them to practice translating common Japanese conversations. The games play so much fan service to every video game, and pop culture references. I wrote a mini-FAQ to the 2nd game's childhood section back in the day. There's really not anything else like them. That said I'm sad they remained Japan only games. I think they would have been successful enough to influence other western games. Maybe if that influnce had taken place, the dating elements and writing in western games wouldn't be clumsier than a sex scene in a GRRM novel.

While it's lamentable that no one has managed to crack the PS1 version (or any version with voice acting) open yet, from what I understand the SNES script is pretty close to the same. I will definitely give this a go.

Ok, so this thing is crazy impressive. They used the MSU-1 "chip" (a spec chip used for expanding ROMs beyond the SNES limit supported in emulation and via FPGA in some flash carts) to add back in CD cutscenes and some voice acting. It's nowhere near the amount of voice acting in the CD versions but it's still extremely cool and if this is the best we've got in English, then it's still pretty great.

I finally watched this video, few years late on this, but I was always not sure I wanted to sit through 6 hours of this.

In a way, I'm kinda wishing I hadn't watched it, because dammit I really wish I could play a game like this. So many people like Persona games for their dating sim parts, but that isn't the main part of the game, and really have very little choice to them. This game looks like it does what I've wanted to see for a long time, where it gets rid of all the action and fighting and just has a story built around the social linking. I feel like I've wanted to play a game like this for a while, where forging relationships was the real goal, and it had the production value that Tokimeki Memorial seems to have. Sure there are a lot of VNs, and even dating sims, but they all seem so cheaply made compared to this with far less options, and variety of locations and outfits, and dialogue from the look of it.

Now after having watched such a long video on it, I'm so bummed that I can't really play it unless I really brush up on my Japanese. Yeah I know they finally managed to translate the SFC version a couple years ago, but I'd rather play this PSX version from the look of it.

Did he vanish? He hasn't posted a new review for a long, long time. Or is his stuff now behind a paywall?
He unfortunately got shot down by a Mark David Chapman look-alike.

"Imagine a ten hours review of an obscure japanese game.
It's easy if you try..."

not tag worthy
I just remembered that guy reviewed games,
but it is the most time rogers thing to do, go on about a game for 6 hours on a random subject that relates to the game somehow. I remember this was part of his appeal. but good good man.. 6 fucking hours.
I Respect That GIF by Patriot Act

but I still ain't watching it.

I love Tim, and he's one of the few Kotaku guys that matters, but holy shit his reviews are getting out of hand more and more

It's a good game, but this video is ridiculous. It would be like watching a six hour review of the Star Wars trilogy instead of just watching the movies. I don't want to hear any of you clowns complain about having a backlog or not enough time to play games when you are watching this.

I don't watch these all in one sitting (nor are they intended to), but Tim Rogers does crack me up.

His ability to be ridiculous over such a long period with a straight face is a super power.

He still does a podcast and streams on twitch (not playing games, just sitting around talking about himself of course). But yeah he hasn't done anything to earn that patreon money in a very long time.
