Top Games measured by Gross Revenue on Steam in 2024

Destiny one of the top earners, yet still failing. WOW.
TFS was one of the biggest release of the year but its all about engagement and player retention, and in that regard it failed. Looks like loads of people showed up for the finale then checked out, myself included.

No mtx, but they did release in-game mod support a few months ago and added some much needed tools for modders.

I think the only strictly single-player game at the top is Wukong. Otherwise you got Horizon Remastered, Cyberpunk, Metaphor, or Veilguard in the lower tiers.
Think that is Horizon Forbidden West not the remaster.

BG3 was/is a top seller and single player. At least as far as there's no mtx. I know you can do co op but that's not multiplayer in the sense that's its not making additional money off if it.
Simply put, they won the lottery in 2023 (this year its been WuKong).

Look at how many AAA singleplayer games, AA singleplayer games and indie single-player games launch on Steam day 1 and aren't anywhere in this top 100 list.

IMO, there's no rule for success except keeping your budgets managed, so even if you underperform on your chosen platforms, you don't lose your shirt and have to start from zero.

It's funny, a lot of games and yet I have only played/or am interested in playing 8-9 games.
It is clear that the interest, preferences and tastes of the majority of today's gamers are quite far from my interest, preferences and tastes.🤷

BG3 is top tier, I won't say equal to Witcher 3 back in the PS4 days, but somewhere there, an outlier, can't compare with your normal single player releases

Crazy that the top 10 most played games on Steam (CCU) back in 2019 required the game to have 100K simultaneous players, after the pandemic it required 200K, last year it was 300K and this one is at 450K players.

Also it's surprising that half of them are pay to play this year.

Don't really understand why there's a big PC push outside of GaaS, it is not moving the needle at all.
Depends what needle they aim to move. It moved my needle, I’ve bought almost every single player release on Steam from Sony. And there are good sales if you wait a bit, there is a Playstation Studios winter sale right now with up to 75% off. Good stuff!

Seems like Bungie is just bloated and spends too much money for what it is producing.

Free money. It's not a competing platform in the traditional sense and they don't need to sell huge amounts to make profit. These don't cost 50 million to port or anything. I don't see the issues here.

As Warren Buffett once said, It’s like picking up Pennies in front of a Steam roller, pun intended

Bronze is really scraping the bottom of the barrel, huh.

I suppose it depends on how much revenue these games have made against the budget set for their games, minus the 30% Steam cut.

What's worrying is how quickly Metaphor dropped off in terms of sales. It launched strong with a million on it's first day, probably through pre-orders, and now finds itself well outside of the top 20 on almost every available chart despite being relentlessly glazed by every outlet, winning a ton of awards, and given all the PR it could ever want for a AA title. Infinite Wealth and P3 Reload followed similar paths. Started off strong with a million in a week, and now find themselves outside of the top 20 on almost every chart despite both having almost an entire year to accumulate sales. With their budgets though, they're probably not far off making their money back already.

If you're talking about something like Veilguard, then it's a bust.

There are Atlus fans who come in droves to buy and play the titles day 1, once they're done with it they're done with it.

Atlus has largely done a great job of serving all those fans, creating new ones and managing their expectations. But ultimately, their franchises require a massive time investment.

It's honestly the same as Falcom but bigger by an order of magnitude.

It's an additional sales channel for them. More $$$ helps with keeping talent with good bonuses and benefits which keeps the hits coming.

Like keep in mind that all these big publishers sell keys in bulk to legit key sites like GMG or Fanatical, probably each taking keys in the thousands. It's not just Steam CCUs that count as a sale to Sony. They also did well buying Nixxes and keeping the ports in-house, further increasing margins and spreading out costs.

The other thing is these sales are not "pennies", estimated owners on SteamDB for something like GOW Ragnarok goes between 295k to 2.4 million! All these people bought in at a full $70 too. This is a title that many here think sold "mediocre", nevermind something like Horizon or Ghost of Tsushima.

That's pretty typical for single player only games to drop off fast after the initial launch... but it may be way steeper now.

Usually price cuts get a bump in sales but even those might be what they used to be.

Wallpaper Engine selling for $4 is a top 100 seller. Amazing, Never heard of it, but it's been around since 2018 and has almost 800,000 reviews. Yes, 800k!
It's an app but it's really good and people are still uploading stuff for it, plus if you buy it on pc you can also use it on your phone.
