[I collect VHS tapes]

Fallout 1 and 2 were some of the first RPGs I ever played, and I immediately fell involve with these sort of worlds

fast forward and it just sorta hit me I haven't played many post-apocalyptic. I'm specifically interested in post-nuclear type games.

I just picked up Metro Redux and I think I'll likely try the STALKER games after. I'll obviously also be playing Atomfall when it comes out this month.

Been eyeing the Wasteland games. Which should I play first? any other recs appreciated.

Edit: I should add I’ve played all the FO titles. Loved all of them besides FO4. Never got around to finishing that one.

Coincidentally have just been playing Ashes 2063. Game based on the Doom engine, mostly shooter with some light rpg elements. Completely free and comes with 4 episodes bundled (with more being made).

Other than SMT 1&2 and SMTIV Apocalypse (sequel to SMTIV) most games have their own contain story, you can start anywhere you want.

My suggestion choose one of these three...

Nocturne is probably your best bet, both because it's the best of the mainline SMT games and it's also a good introduction to how hard the series tends to be... yet, it's still surmountable.

Despite being the newest entry, I'd specifically not recommend SMT5, which is a pretty stark departure from the rest of the games. I also thought it was pretty weak overall - all the worst traits of open-world games.

Boring answer I know but the original Wasteland on C64 or Apple. Definitely left a decades long impression and at the time was a refreshing change from typical RPGS.

It's a great genre. Fallout is king, but lots of good ones.

Two that are unlikely to get a mention:
Enslaved is a great game that doesn't really focus all that much on the post-apocalyptic part of the story.
Elex has a pretty elaborately developed world that's unlike any other game.

I like fallout 3 more , better world, better environment , better settings , better atmosphere, more horror , yea worse quest and choice.
