This sent me down a little bit of a rabbit hole as it turns out there are quite a few covers of this song.

This is the only one that passed the vibe check for me:


Not generally a Marilyn Manson fan, and I'll probably still take the original even though it always felt like a bit of an Ozzy Osbourne LARP. The song really needs the male vocals contrasted with the background kid vocals IMO.

yeah I also don't really like his original music, but his covers are usually pretty decent.

I'm just a massive Anneke van Giersbergen fanboy, so I like that Vomitron version the best by default

oh damn, I must have missed it. I thought this was an unpopular opinion, given that it's a The Who song, and it takes some significant liberties with it.

I wanted to put something here just to share a song I liked but couldn't think of anything. I considered putting down Helen Reddy's "Delta Dawn" and telling the lie that I preferred it to Tanya Tucker's original. Then happily I discovered that the original is a 5 minutes long discombobulated mess by Bette Midler.

Big thumbs up to this thread - I think whichever version you think is 'best' depends mainly on which one you heard first, but I've found a lot of outstanding covers and new artists here to add to my playlists.
