4th: Starfield (3 million estimated)

While Microsoft has not provided sales figures for Starfield, Warner CEO revealed Mortal Kombat 1 to have sold 3 million globally by the end of November 2023. MK1 sold more than Starfield by then and Starfield hasn’t charted the top 20 since.

All will sell well but BOTW2 will be king. I think it will release along with the Switch 2 and be compatible with Switch 1. Regardless, they will build it in a way that Switch 2 benefits it such as dynamic resolution scaling, and it will get a bump with the new hardware. Over 20 million.

Starfield will do plenty but is on Game Pass and isn’t on PlayStation. Doubt it cracks 12 mil first year. Could be a buggy boring mess for all we know with a microtransaction store menu included to add extra offence. I highly doubt it will be locked to game pass but… I bet someone at Microsoft has considered making it game pass only to drive subscription numbers up.

Spiderman will be a big hit. But it will be the third game of that formula and I think a bit of been there done that sets in with these. I’m sure HFW is still a ways off HZD sales as an example. Spiderman 2 hits a ceiling at 15 million, PC included, in its first 3 years.

Harry Potter… I wish it success. If it’s good, I’ll buy a copy. Sales wise, They botched missing Christmas and having a less cluttered holiday season. Probably doesn’t crack 10 million definitely not 12.

The things I was reading about the Harry Potter game before release was baffling.

"gamers don't overlap with harry potter yada yada " like Harry Potter hasn't had pretty popular games before. An open world Harry Potter with a full Hogwarts to explore is just simple money. They just had to do it right at the right time with the right tech. I think they did a great job for being a toys to life dev before.

That's US though, and assuming that MK and Starfield have equal popularity worldwide. Might be true - but FIFA 23 didn't sell a lot less than 3 million for example.

Backlash? Hurt sales?

Dude, it was among the three fastest-selling first-party games in PlayStation's history, only trailing behind Ragnarök and Helldivers II, while surpassing the sales of the original within a similar timeframe with half the consoles install base and without discounts. It was a massive, MASSIVE success.

Massive massive third place 😱

I guess if you times it by 2 massive massives you can be up there with the others. 🤷‍♂️

unfortunately in absence of official numbers, what we are left with trying to triangulate based on other games. Another comparative is Dead Island 2, that just recently announced 3 million games sold as of May 2024. It sold worse than Starfield in US but better than Starfield in Europe.

I picked Hogwarts because HP is such a massive franchise.

I'm not surprised by Starfield's low sales. A majority of people would have just played it on Gamepass.

I guess I never voted because I remember this poll, and I recall being pretty torn between HP and Zelda coming in first. I probably would have given the nod to Zelda though, given the hype and that it was following a 30+ million seller. Never bet against Potter.

I guess TotK could get a second wind with a Switch 2 port and end up woth more lifetime sales. Then again, so could HL, and on more platforms to boot.

EDIT: I also thought SM2 would be a much stronger contender given the IP.
