Ya there's many online games that match make this isn't unique to destiny however another factor is the rise of games that tell you shit all about the mechanisms and whatnot... Destiny is also guilty of this and I bet warframe has a large community too.
Not that I think this is necessarily a bad thing but for example warframe you cannot really play without a wiki or forum and destiny I'm always helping people out with things they had no idea about

May not be the biggest, but HaloGaf is definitely the most notorious. It seems all Halo threads get shut down eventually

No, it's Destiny LFG for primarily PS4 with a couple of Xbox posts.
Actual discussion really seems to pick up whenever Bungie has some actual news.
All anecdotal, but that's what I saw.

I am of course biased on the type of community threads I go into, but I love the Guild Wars 2 community here on GAF. Particularly based on what the players have accomplished. The devs have given shoutouts to the community thread, some of the groups members have made tools and guides that help many players, and inside the game, GAF guild helps other guilds who is failing missions.
Every saturday evening we do casual guild missions together. We have tons of beginners who come with us and no man, charr, sylvari, norn or asura are left behind as we go through insane guild jumping puzzles, or fight over vast numbers of other players in World vs World mass server PvP.
GAF guild is also a very diverse guild with people doing different things in the game. Some are dedicated to the PvE, some to the dungeons, some to the fractals, others are all-arounders, some pop in and out with some hiatuses due to real life.
They've done really good. Some have made outside the game tools like controller support (the best config I've seen), guides that are appreciated on other sites!

curious about this as well. most OT i've been into are pretty much the same people boosting pages. and when i went into the destiny OT thread months earlier it was pretty much "LFM LFM LFM LFM LFM" spam
and don't get me started on the halo community. extremely vocal players speaking for the community on which halo they think is the best. does anyone remember the original thread title when halo 5 ads was leaked? jesus.

From the new games its probably Rocket League.
For a largely single player experience, Bloodborne has to be one of the biggest this year. I'm surprised that a game like The Witcher 3 hasn't had as many posts as the Bloodborne threads even though that came out on 3 platforms and comfortably sold more. It's probably because the majority of posts on BB are asking for advice on certain bosses/areas haha.

OTs went up a week before release. With all the Destiny threads it reached a tipping point where the mods decided to change the rules to 24 hours before release.
Ended up being a decent change. Since one rule was adjusted there were many who also wanted all re-appearing threads shifted to Community, including platform threads such as SteamGAF. Any move to community reduces the variety of non-regular posters so some weren't too happy about it for a long time.
There is joking around, insulting and then there's this shit. Don't yo udare to associate SteamGAF with this turd of a shit piece of Scheiße. Sakura Spirit and all Sakura games are disgusting in every possible way and shouldn't exist in this plane of existence. When you ask who is behind you when you're walking home at 4 pm in total darkness, it's Sakura Spirit. If you lost your keys despite being sure you had them in your pocket, it's Sakura Spirit. The moment when your girlfriend cheats on you because you lost your keys somewhere in the dark and arrive too late at ther house. Sakura Spirit. This game should be thrown of steam like the persians from the cliffs of the Thermopylae. It's not worth your time, it's not worth your thoughts, it's not even worth the good selling cards. SteamGAF is better than that. SteamGAF isn't some dungeon filled with cannibalistic rats that have to eat way of the rotten bodies of their fallen. We are not the ashes behind the oven of fate. Don't you look down on us. Sakura Spirit is not part of SteamGAF. We are humans! We ARE humans! Don't you ever forget that when you want to insult us again.

Honestly find that aspect annoying since it means it's hard to have a talk about a game post release because your post will get lost amongst the, quite frankly, spam.
Yeah, I especially hate OTs for games with online because of this.
