Why does Sony hate their own IP?

For the 9th generation of consoles, Sony has been particularly conservative with use of its IP. Making new games is "too risky and expensive", the PlayStation 5 was even put out with 2 remasters as marquee launch titles (DeS and Spiderman Remastered).

Sony: Since you love remasters so much this gen, why are you ignoring the treasure trove of IP and content you've built over the last 30 years?

I don't need a Days Gone remaster or another fucking TLOU remaster. I don't need a remaster of ANYTHING that launched on the PS4.

Where's GoW 1&2 remake?

Where's infamous 1&2?

Where's Killzone trilogy?

Where's Resistance trilogy?

Where's SOCOM trilogy? (quasi-milsim is hot right now btw)

Where's Syphon Filter? (Sam Fisher is apparently dead so stealth/espionage is up for the taking)

Where's MotorStorm or Twisted Metal? (racing genre desperately in need of something besides GT & Forza)

Also, where's Uncharted? Nate can be done, that's fine, there's still so many other characters in the franchise. ND has been taking you for a nantucket sleigh ride this gen, 5 years in and delivered 1.5 remasters and a fucking CG trailer.

No one this side of Nintendo has released as many remasters as Sony at this point. You have to be the only person on Earth saying Sony is “conservative” with remasters just because they haven’t gotten to the specific ones you’re looking forward to most yet.

Should have clarified better - I meant conservative as in using their IP to make NEW games. Clearly they've settled on remasters, but they've basically all been shit from PS4 except Demon's Souls.

PS3 games were coded around the cell processor. Much harder to port them than PS4 games that already run on PS5 and take one guy a month to port to the PS5 sdk.

The good thing is, they are almost out of remasters of games they released in the PS4 era. To them, its an easy job since the PS4 was an HD console. minimum effort and 2 dolla job and you have a remaster ( or at least that is what they call it because its not even close to what a proper remaster is )

so soon, they will be forced to actually start doing proper remasters of old games from the PS3 and below era.

Thats when Sony will start to actually be in trouble. because their output will be so shit everyone will call them out on the shit output per year. I dont think there is another game besides Days gone from the PS4 era they didnt re release yet.

True. But if remake is too tough - emulate? I can play MGS4 on my PC today because nerds on the internet built that shit for free for funsies.

A Sony built and tuned emulator could 100% run on PS5.

Yeah, this is kind of what irks me the most.

Not that Sony is the only one doing it, Switch has pretty much gotten every single WiiU game. But unlike PS4, which was a humongous success and played by +117M people, WiiU was an absolute train wreck and isn’t B/C on Switch.. So that makes more sense to me.

I just pray Nintendo doesn’t follow suit on Switch 2.. But we’re already hearing rumors of a BotW remaster.

That's what funding 3rd party games are for, like they did last year.

because most those games sold poorly, they do not synergize with their recent/upcoming sequels or shows/movies, and they would be a significant effort to port over because they were made for the PS2/PS3.

god of war 1 & 2 were the top selling Sony-owned IPs on PS2 behind Gran Turismo, selling almost 9M combined

infamous 1 & 2 sold about 2M a piece

MotorStorm is the 17th best selling game of the PS3's entire library, only beaten by TLOU, Uncharted and GT (for Sony IP).

Resistance series sold ~5M combined, same for Killzone

Demon's Souls, which has already been remastered, has no show/movie tie-ins, and was only ever developed for the "very difficult" PS3 only sold 1.7M

Nothing from the PS4? You can't think of one game in particular that could really use it?
Fine, fine - yes, Bloodborne. But no, please enjoy this remaster of a Days Gone, a game that sold and reviewed so poorly we refused to let the studio make a sequel.

Generally? a PS5 version of RDR2 would be kinda dope. But I get Rockstar is too poor of a studio and it would cost too much.

In a World where Hermen's favourite Toys (Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West) sell more than 10m. units each, those are very shitty numbers.

I wouldn't even bother with those, mate. These people are just cringe. They will spin every opinion and story to try and make Sony look good. I really hope that they're employees or shareholders because it's incredible to see somebody love a corporation the way they love Sony. Absolutely incredible.

It's relative to install base dude. PS2 had 5 games that sold over 10 mil. PS3 only had 2. PS4 had 9.

PlayStation was the dominant console in PS2 + PS4 gens, not so much for PS3. Which is a real shame because they've got quite a bit of great IP and content trapped on that system.

They really just hate the good IP. That shit you don't care about or actively dislike? Hermen's got you covered.

Demon's Souls: a ps3-only title that only sold 1.7M copies originally.

Sony: How 'bout a full-on remake guys?

Bloodborne: a ps4 title that sold 7.5M copies

Nothing will get better until Hermen is gone. He ain't cut out for this.

Hot take: Hermen (or those above him) are embarrassed/ashamed by the "edgy" content of their 1P output pre-PS4.

Thus - Kratos is now a family man, Killzone and infamous are ignored, Twisted Metal is buried 6 ft under.

Note, violence is still ok but it needs to be sophisticated and have underlying themes, eg TLOU, Dad of War, HZD

They don't hate their own IP, they just got distracted with live service crap because they thought they'd make more money with live service crap.

Being the top selling Sony-owned IP during a time when their first party was not that strong is not that big of a flex. PlayStation first party didn't start doing super well until very late PS3 + PS4. Out of your list this is the only one that didn't sell that poorly and is rumored to be being re-released anyways.

Even during that generation companies were complaining about only selling 4-5 million copies of their AAA game because they weren't breaking even or making a horrible ROI. Selling less than half of that for most those games is not great unless the game is made in Japan or another country with cheap gamedev labor.

You see how you have to say things like "17th best selling game" for a game that thousands of people were forced to buy with their console and have to combine as much as 3 games to still give me a not so high number.

In regards to Demon Souls, Demon Souls was a remake which is different because it gives you the opportunity to improve the underlying game and modernize it whereas remasters are the same old game that you are trying to sell again with usually just minor picture quality & performance improvements. Demon Souls is the spiritual predecessor to a franchise that sold somewhere between 27-37M copies at the time. It had potential to sell a lot more copies on PS5 as a remake with core concept now being so popular than it did on PS3. Also because it's a remake Demon Souls being from the difficult to make PS3 does not make a difference, it's a remake, they remade the game from scratch. The problem with these remasters is that they are going to probably sell less than what they sold on PS3 and you are going to have to basically remake a significant part of the game just to get the same old game running on modern consoles. Cost is high and reward is low.

Nobody cares about any of these franchises. I don't know why gamers are so obsessed with junk like Killzone and Resistance when those games were b-tier at best when they were new. Sony is better off making new games than those.

For Sony exclusive or rather timed exclusives, only Final Fantasy, Stellar Blade, and Ratchet and Clank are what I want.

Infamous used to be one but lost interest in that as it's been too damn long.

spot the zoomer! here they are:

ain't doing that either, please enjoy TLOU the remastered remake, 2nd edition
Check the sales numbers on those old games, they’re just totally irrelevant. Nobody cares about them.

Of course that doesn’t mean that it might not be worth making a new game in the series and trying again, but people need to stop acting like it’s some gold mine Sony is sitting on, because it’s not.

people in this hobby = new bad, old good
Industry reacts by a stream of remasters = no i dont want these remasters, i want the most obscure, c-tier, game which released as a digital only title when that was not popular to be remastered.
Obviously i’m joking about the last part, but can we get new IPs please? You can’t fault them for chasing trends and releasing remasters when the market behaves in such a way that rewards these efforts.
