Yoshi's Island- are any of the later Yoshi games as good?

I just finished it a couple days ago and it gives Mario World a run for its money. It's such a beautifully made, timeless platformer with tons of amazing visuals, effects, and a wonderfully aged artstyle.

I'm just asking because it seems like nobody really discusses anything Yoshi besides the first game. Is anything after the first game on SNES worth playing? Yoshi's story seems mixed

Also, a question- there are 2 empty slots in each one of the worlds, are those levels? how do you unlock them? I want to see all of the secrets

I am a big fan as you can tell by my username.

Short answer: no, none of them are as good as Yoshi's Island, but there's some that are good. Yoshi's Woolly World is probably the one that comes closest, great little platformer. Crafted World and Yoshi's New Island were decent but I wouldn't overly recommend them. Story and Yoshi's Island DS are kind of bad.

To unlock the extra levels you gotta 100% all the regular levels in the world.

Fanboys declared each new iteration "the best since SNES", but it's always nothing but cope and console warring, especially from Nintendo-only outlets. In reality, none of them ever remained a classic like the original.

One problem is that Nintendo made the series their "Mario for babies" franchise. There's no substance beyond looking cutesy in the later ones.

It kind of looks that way. IDK why but with the most recent entries the music got progressively more annoying and childish, culminating with Crafted World where it's a cacophony of weird annoying kids sounds.
sad especially since SNES Yoshi's Island has so many great tracks

Same with Mario's 2D games too, starting with NSMB and ending at NSMBU they all had generic "bah" soundtracks while the 3D entries got the music that's actually memorable and fun. Wonder had bangers though

Short answer: No

Are they worth your time? also no.

Yoshi's Island is one of the best games ever made, I mean, it technically is Super Mario World 2.

Sadly Nintendo didn't iterate on what is great about the YI, so, even if I find the other Yoshi games entertaining, I wouldn't recommend them.

Yoshi's Woolie World is a nearly perfect platformer in my opinion, and it holds an extra special place for me as it was the first game my daughter and I played through completely together. Beautiful, amazing game, if people speak ill of it they just haven't played it, it's nearly perfect.

I consider this the best 2D platform game ever made.

kinda hard for any sequel or successor to live up to it.

I only played Yoshi's Island DS after that (just a boring, generic platform in comparison) and Yoshi's Story, which is pretty good if you go for 100% and i like the visuals but it's still not on par with the original in any way.

Wooly World is pretty solid, as are most of the modern Yoshi games, but they’re insanely easy. Nintendo took the Kirby route with Yoshi games, so there’s just not much challenge.

The music in some of those games is absolutely phenomenal, though. Especially Wooly World.

I had a good time back in the day with that DS game. Touch & Go I think it was called. Basically an endless autoscroller depending on how long you last.

Still doesn’t come close to Yoshi’s Island, but it does have roughly the same artstyle and enemies and so on.

So i've heard! I have a savefile of it on 3DS but I haven't finished it yet
Sadly, this is one of the cases where it's just not the same without the beautiful HD graphics on Wii U.
But still, the core gameplay is just as fun. OST is also pretty good.

Might just be the most overrated 2D platformer of the 16-late 16 bit era. The art style is fucking atrocious. If you enjoyed it it's because you were 5 years old when it came out and the crayon look probably tickled your nuts gleefully. Grow up.

Baby Mario sucks, the egg throwing sucks, the music sucks (definitely a total precursor to the wa wa bullshit we'd get shoved in our faces years late).

And if you think it's better than the likes of SMB3 and World then you are an Offiicial Retardtm

Not IMO, they switched the focus to literal toddlers, so they're braindead easy... They're not bad but they don't feel nearly as good as that one

I was like 20 years old when I played and still have a hard time finding a game more technically and aesthetically impressive than it. And yeah, I enjoyed it way better than World.

But it's ok if you hate it so much, not everyone has good tastes ;)

Basically the best game ever made IMO. This is the game that made me realize games can be so much more and move away from realism. This game sparks joy in my heart.

I played Crafted World. The problem with it as well as many modern nintendo games are that they are TOO easy, as if they are making the game for 2 year olds. I remember playing Mario on nes when I was three and Nintendo didn't shy away from having a challenge. Now, the games are so easy that it's impossible to lose. They make the 'challenge' be collecting some obscure collectible that doesn't really mean anything. I feel like in this game, a lot of the enemies, like shy guys, aren't even attempting to attack you. They are just existing in the world and you're the one initiating attacks on them. The lack of difficultly ruins the game imo.

The most direct sequels, Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island, were farmed out to other developers that didn't get it and the games are a major downgrade as a result. I'd say don't even bother tracking them down.

Yoshi's touch and go was ok but it's more like a score attack arcade game.

Not that the original YI was super challenging, but Woolly World seemed like one of those modern Nintendo baby games with absolutely no challenge at all. I dropped that one pretty quickly.

Yeah, the series never hit the same peak that the original did.

I will always defend Yoshi's Story for the N64 though. The controls are a little bit loose, but I think it's actually a very good game. It gets a bad rap for being too easy. You can certainly coast through the game with minimal effort, but it also rises to your performance level. If you're finding all the hidden items, tougher levels get unlocked, and some of the later ones get pretty challenging.

It been a very long time now, but I thought Yoshi’s Island DS was pretty great. That said, I don’t recall it being as good as the original.

I can’t say the same for Yoshi’s New Island though. The only memorable thing about that game was the horrible soundtrack.

Yeah, you trip indeed, also the graphics are great on this game especially when the screen goes all trippy.

Why they decided to make baby music in the last few game man it is AWFUL. Forgot I had the Switch game and booted and thought why didn't I ever beat this? The music is that bad.

Honestly, I never really liked it. Loosing the baby always gave me anxiety
hated the crying sound
im not listening to that for hours

an entire game thats an escort mission? ehhhh

also found the egg aiming so slow and cumbersome.

game's probably pretty good though.

The Yoshi game on N64 is one of the most disappointing games ever. They went from making maybe the greatest 2D platformer ever to some baby shit.

But I heard the last couple, and the DS one, were decent.

Wooly World was a lot of fun on Wii U and unlocking all the different color yoshis
