Indie Games 2015 [February] Now Voting - Post 556!

I've been playing a bit of that. Mixed impressions, on one hand the level design has some massive flaws and many of the bosses I have encountered feel very half baked. That said it controls lovely and the rapid pace of the game does mean that after a bit of playing it, its more major annoyances fade away.

What flaws in the level design do you see? It all feels like an homage to old NES games to me. The platforming mostly feels like Ninja Gaiden-type BSery with a mix of Castlevania 3.

I'm on my mobile device at the mo so this is gonna be briefer then I would like. But many of the individual screens felt very thrown together with regard to block and enemy placement and their are moments of instant death pits and spikes which feel very cheap in placement.

So we have about.. 8 weeks until Pillars of Eternity drops. In that time I need to play...

Darkest Dungeon, Sunless Sea, Transistor, Apotheon, Danganronpa - and that's just the tip of the ice berg!

Damn it.

Good luck with that backlog :p

Quick Impressions: This game is NES authentic! The Demon from Ghosts N' Goblins makes a cameo, you have flying Medusa-likes, bullshit Ninja Gaiden platforming that even have sudden bullshit birds fly in to eff you up. It's glorious. No maps, barebones NES goodness. Combat feels great, lots of enemy variation, bosses are fun. Towns people are great. Even those times in NES games were devs were cruel and pretended to give you something real nice but then it turns out to be squat. Thankfully, the dev allows you to kill the bastard NPC trying to play tricks on you.

I know a lot of people give Nicalis shit, but damn you guys need to check this game out. REALLY GOOD.

I realy like the visuals, it nails what remember from the NES era

Yay!

Jobbs' Ghost Song is being published by Adult Swim Games!
https://twitter.com/adultswimgames/status/563049501393313792
Here's a new trailer

That's amazing, the game is looking better and better!

Super Galaxy Squadron - Various ships to choose from, each one with different status and abilities. I played the alpha/demo and on that there is only one level with a boss and half of the ships can be chosen, the gameplay is simple controlling the ship with the arrows z to shoot and space to the special once the bar is filled. Not much to say about it because the alpha/demo is very limited but I can see myself buying this game on a near future.

Elders of Madness - Another shooter, this time a project made by various students. The controls also are simple but shooting is a bit annoying because you need to press the key for each projectile. While it's cool to see kids taking part on game development I don't recommend it at all, unless you want to see the result of their efforts.

===============

Playing these games made me wish for some shooters indie games that takes inspiration from Einhänder, G-Darius, R-Type Delta/Final etc.

I have been into indies for a while now, 80% of my steam games are indies. Btw, how is Darkest Dungeon.

It is very good. I think the game is too easy for non-boss part. Boss part is unforgiving and guarantees a failure or life loss for a blind run. The game is challenging but dying can be very frustrate.

Had so much fun with early side scrolling shooters, Uridium was my first man i loved that game went through a load of simple shooters. Delta, Armalyte to name a few from a pretty large list.

Aways on the look out for similar games from my early days, would love to see someone take on thrust from the old c64 game - i've tried quite a few but nothing ever seems to quite capture it.

Skim through Steam and notice that there are 50 more indie games coming this month..... while my steam wallet has only $20 left.

I finished The Talos Principle, rounded up some of my unfinished games (lone survivor) and now I want to move to another game. Suggestions? ( no EA games please!)

Recommendations from this month? In general?
What genres do you enjoy?

I still need to play Lone Survivor myself

Thinking of picking up Quasi. Can't find a single review or impression, except for this from TIGSource
This is both one of the most uniquely fun and interesting games I've ever played, and one of the most confusing/frustrating. In the end I'm glad I bought it, and I like that it doesn't hand-hold too much. Haven't beaten it yet

Cubesis, Echo of the WIlds, Eidolon, Full Bore, Legend of Grimrock 2, Banner Saga

Have fun!

From those, Banner Saga meh for me, Eidolon is just walking around, full bore I wanted to try but forgot, Grimrock 2 although great maybe later (not in the mood for a long as rgp!)

Btw, I played a bit if Apotheon on ps4 and am disappointed. Although the game looks awesome the controlls are so out there that I cant really enjoy it.

Well new ones. Although I have some preferences I am trying to open my horizons! So any genre will do!
One exception: no walking simulators.
Some of my favorites from the last year:
- NaissanceE
- Teleglitch
- Infested Planet
- This War of Mine
- Cloudbuilt

Why don't you like walking sims? You'll miss out on stuff like Proteus, Eidolon, Mirrormoon, etc.

Still Cubesis, more people need to play that :p

The only thing I'm really anticipating this month is Oblitus. Although if the rumor that Hotline Miami 2 is releasing in March is true, then I'm holding out for that

I feel burned out by that genre. I played lots of them but beginning to wonder what is the point you know?
Totally. Personally I love exploration, so I haven't gotten tired of those kinds of games yet

It's great to be able to add Funded under games I'm anticipating in the Kickstarter thread. Drift Stage, Moonman, Where They Cremate The Roadkill, Shadowrun Hong Kong, Children of Morta, all past 100%

Has anyone played these games? Had them on my Wishlist and realized I hadn't seen any impressions:
- Wings of Vi
- McDROID
- Magnetic By Nature

TerraTech - $29.99 (PC, Mac)
tt_screenshot_1280x720_sumoshowdown.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/285920

In TerraTech, you design, construct and command a fleet of unique vehicles, as you battle your way to victory across the lawless frontiers of new alien worlds, in a quest for glory and profit. In the distant future, Earth's natural resources have been depleted, and as an off-world prospector it's your job to travel to alien planets and scour them for valuable materials. These can be refined and shipped back to Earth in return for cash, or crafted into new components to augment your fleet. The rarest resources unlock the best equipment, so expand your territory and capture enemy bases, to secure your position on each planet.

Edit: doing a post for Wings of Vi. It was posted as an Unreleased Game in October but never got a Released post. It was mentioned a few times in the Indie GOTY Voting thread and I've seen praise for its brutal difficulty

Wings of Vi - Free demo, $14.99 (PC)
ss_a424353ddacce2bc7145a74348f62c6d42193266.1920x1080.jpg

http://grynsoft.com/wingsofvi/

Wings of Vi is a challenging 2D platformer in which you play as the angel Vi, tasked with defeating the Demon Lord Jeh’oul after he is freed from captivity. Throughout her journey she must traverse dangerous worlds and fight countless hellspawn in order to discover where Jeh’Oul lurks and save the world from his demonic clutch.
The game takes inspiration from "Megaman", "Cave Story", and "Castlevania", along with a host of masochistic retro platformers, while cutting out the arbitrary difficulty of hidden traps and pixel-perfect jumps in favor of skill based gameplay. The game aims to capture the attention of the same core group of players as its spiritual precursor, "I Wanna be the Boshy", including the hardcore-platformer lovers and the speedrunning community, all while appealing to a broader audience through a variety of difficulty levels and modifiers.

Yep, and I fully second your sentiment.
Nice. If I recall, you had some hesitations regarding these vehicle building type games. Cool that you're enjoying it. Of all the similar games I've played - Autocraft, Terratech, Crashtastic, etc. - it's definitely my favorite

Easily the best from those ,yeah, mostly because it actually has interesting content on top of the sandbox builder.

Another Somerville GIF

deathray.gif

So I thought I'd build in John's first enemy.  A mini death ray.  This prefab will set the basis for all the attack properties of the enemies in the game.  When I build in some defence for the little guy you'll be able to pass through multiple rays like these. Matching colours to applicable controller buttons.  Get it wrong though and he's roasted long pig.

Really liking the look of this game and the framing narrative sounds genius

Moobabe and co, do you think The Masterplan needs its own thread?

Umm.. I feel like it could probably use the attention, yes. It's pretty good but I have a horrible feeling it'll slip under the radar - no way it gathers the kind of traction games like Sunless Sea, Darkest Dungeon or Besiege are

Disclaimer: I havent played the game yet.

I found this really interesting (and I think Baddy even mentioned it in the blurb that I put in the OP). I am going to make a thread about it since I really feel this idea deserves some more attention. I wanted to share what I found on it and I'll offload it here first to not forget about it.

The dev of Earthtongue (Greenlight: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375444882) offers a cute little payment option called "Pay by Art". You can buy it for $4 OR you send him a drawing of the game with the following rules:

Earthtongue will be available to be paid for by art instead of cash. I know that not everyone has the cash available to purchase a game, or sometimes they lack the method to pay digitally. If you send me a fan work based on Earthtongue, I’ll send you a free key for the game on itch.io!

There are only a few small rules!

It needs to have taken you at least half an hour. It’s okay if you’re not good / it’s not pretty! But I’d like to spend at least a little time on it.
Can be an art of any kind. A drawing is probably the easiest, but if you’d rather provide a song or anything else that’s fine too!
Have it be about Earthtongue in some way.
Include the name Earthtongue somewhere in the work
It has to be okay for me to post this artwork on my twitter / tumblr / wherever. I will credit you however you wish.
Limit one per person. It’s okay to trade art for a key if you’ve already bought the game, perhaps to use as a gift, but I will only trade a key for art once.

There are also a couple bonus, optional requests!

If you have a social media, such as a twitter, please post it there! I’d like it if you could CC me below or give me a link to the post so that I can retweet/reblog/whatever it!
If you do post it on a social media, please provide a link to the Earthtongue page! This is optional, but I’d really appreciate it!

Send me whatever you make, or a link to whatever you make, to [email protected] and I’ll send you a key shortly after!

He talked about his experience on Twitter using this method:

OP impressions!

Albert and Otto:
Pretty standard sidescrolling platformer with silhouette asthetics, reminiscent of Limbo. Floaty controls, box pushing, double jumping and switch switching. Not "bad", but it doesnt do anything particularly interesting to stick out from the crowd.

Cold Contract:
Tactically and mechanically, there is quite a lot going on here, but the game is in dire need of a UI designer and accessibility overhaul. I recommend checking out the demo if you are willing to bruteforce yourself through a tactical game, but there are quite a few other games in the genre that are much more pleasant to play than this. Also, I dont know why, but despite having many tactical options, the combat just doesnt seem as interesting to me as the combat in Ultimate Space Commando for example.

Colony.Exe:
Very simple, yet effective RTS which doesnt taput you up against other players, but time and space. Its nothing you'll endlessly replay, but for a single playthrough its definitely engaging enough to get your mini-economy going and weather any storm that the cosmos is throwing at you.

Condor:
Very simplistic 3D platformer, that I couldnt find much to like about. Neither the aesthetics, nor the mechanics or the level design is appealing to me.

Drew and the Floating Labyrinth:
Very endearing 3D platformer, which tasks you to navigate invisible platforms. They have some interesting visual trickery going on for some of their mechanics, but overall, the gameplay cant keep up with the premise or the art style.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Highly recommended:
Avernum 2
Besiege

Recommended:
An Untitled Story
Colony.Exe

Decent:

Cold Contract
Albert and Otto
Drew and the Floating Labyrinth
All the Way Down

Not recommended:
Condor
Anoxemia
Artificial Immunity

Did you post Avernum impressions, Toma? I don't recall any. I'm interested in the series since it's one of the few old-school RPGs that are also on iPad. I already have Baldur's Gate on iPad so I was wondering if Avernum is worth checking out
