Indie Games 2015 [February] Now Voting - Post 556!

As much as I love the general ambiance of Grow Home, it doesn't half kill your index fingers. Having to tap the right and left shoulder of trigger button on my pad in time for long periods really wears out your fingers. I can't help but wonder if it is all a grand conspiracy on Ubisofts part to give all us indie gamers crippling RSI on our index fingers so we can only play games that force us to hold down the triggers for long periods of time....

.....like Assassin's Creed.

Well, I'm not sure how on-topic it is since it's not a PC game, but the new Shantae is out so I've been playing that a bit. Not too much to say, other than the music being great.

Ooh, on the same level as the original Shantae?

I actually prefer the mouse and keyboard controls. Have you tried them?

I never played the original, but it's as good or better than Risky's Revenge IMO.There's a world select instead of kinda-awkward Metroidvania connectedness, though there's still power-ups that let you access more areas and power ups and such. I got to the last boss and put it on hold because I need to get all the collectables to get the "good" ending. Totally killed the momentum but I know some people love that stuff.

Saw a dev asking for advice on TIG, and he hadn't gotten any feedback in a while, so I'm posting his inquiry over here, see what you guys think

Guys,
can I ask if you think that this game is fundamentally boring?

This game is having a bit of an identity crisis. Puzzle wise, I have a fairly clear vision what I want to do and and some prototypes for additional mechanics on top of the existing one. But I feel that this game has no identity.

Is it a science simulation? It has fairly accurate electrostatics and now I am working on magnetism.
Is it a platformer? Then it needs a story and setting. Possibly science-inspired. I don't want it to be too traditional but to offer something new.
Is it a sandbox? If there were level editing capabilities, you could build mayhem or construct some classic physics experiments. You could play the electron in a mass spectrometry experiment, scattering, or a simple model of the atom. These could be built by users. This would require some serious investment into making level editing capabilities.

Please help me figure this out. I feel like my game is not exciting enough and I am not sure if making more and more levels (which I can) is the right approach.

I didn't like the original from what little I played. Felt like the original Metroid with how stretched out and frustratingly difficult it was. So basically this.

I think the new one is meant to be more fully realized than Risky's Revenge, though it's hard to tell so far. The moment to moment play is fun and would be hard if enemies didn't drop a lot of healing items.

Friendship Club is a local-multiplayer bullet-hell arena-shooter for PC and Mac.
Play as one of Timmy's four best (and imaginary) friends. Chud - a beast from the mountains. Old Man Ricketts - a prospector driven mad by his lust for gold. Shakey Jake - a ninja, bandit, skeleton... thing. The Canardinal - a duck from the Vatican!
Fire bullets that bounce forever. Catch bullets with supreme agility. Headbutt your opponents into oblivion. Be the best friend ever for little Timmy.

The game is getting raved about yet I just don't see the pull. I Must be missing something.

I have the same issue.

But I finally gave in and bought it 5 minutes ago.

at this point you could just advertise your game to me saying it has lots of randomness and loves to kill you. That's more or less all I'm looking for in games these days, so it didn't take a lot of convincing to buy into Sunless Sea after reading some of the Steam reviews.

(aside-that Eurogamer review was a slog to work through, wasn't it?)

Moon Studios
Yeah, this is an indie game

https://twitter.com/SirenumPISCES
It's called The Lost Pisces and essentially it's an action-adventure sci-fi reimagining of the original Little Mermaid story, with fights against massive robotic enemies, inspired by Shadow of the Colossus
Kickstarter is this month, so I'll do a proper post then

This has graphics, but does it also have gameplay? Too many kickstarters are pitched on a visual demo alone and - really - who cares? I'd want to see actual gameplay, cause making pretty artwork is one thing, but making something that actually plays like SotC is a _completely different thing_.

It was only revealed a few days ago, no gameplay yet. I guess they're waiting for the KS.

Either way, I try to have a few guidelines on what I back on Kickstarter, If a dev only shows concept art or screenshots or some early concept mock-up, no actual gameplay, I don't back. Goal seems unreasonable or too lofty, not backing. Often, I know about or have been following games before they get a Kickstarter so I tend to know how far along a project is. Only time I've been burned so far has been Confederate Express

Yeah I skim read pretty much most of it.

I have the same issue.

That happens to me a lot - see a game that I think nah not for me then everyone raves about it and I cave, usually end up not playing it much either - I will never learn.

I wish they had a demo for it, I hate paying for something I wont play.

Yeah, but there are SO many people raving about it and I included it in my/our GOTY thread, so I feel obligated to catch up on it.

I knew Sunless Sea was special. I held off from playing as soon as the announced the release date though so I've got plenty to see that's fresh!

As much as I like Fallen London, I like Sunless Sea's world more. Steampunk age of exploration meets Gothic/Lovecraftian horror. Far more fascinating than the city itself

Btw, I am a bit disappointed that no one mentioned Fract Osc here. That is one of the best games I played this year.

That's like months old man! Toma and Baddy definitely played it though (among others)

So we have about.. 8 weeks until Pillars of Eternity drops. In that time I need to play...

Darkest Dungeon, Sunless Sea, Transistor, Apotheon, Danganronpa - and that's just the tip of the ice berg!

Damn it.

hah, sorry im new here!
Yeah I think I will wait out on Sunless sea a bit. I am interested in Factorio though, they have a demo and everything.

Geez, go play that NOW.

(or as soon as you can)

You are in for a huge treat. Factorio is easily one of the best games of the past few years for me.

Will do, I don't want to play EA game though, I hope they get to finish it.
It is also very refreshing to meet such like minded people who are into indie games. These days I feel like there is more interesting indie games than those "AAA" games that are not worth a damn.

I'm biased - but these are the best threads (with the best people) on GAF.

I dont mind "AAA" games, since they sometimes offer something that Indies cant. The sprawling wastelands of Skyrim? Will take a while for Indies to reach that. Other than that, yeah, Indies are most of what I play lately since "AAA" games leave me hanging more often than not. (I also play Fifa/PES regularly btw, which is another experience Indies cant match in quality and network capabilities)

Why the objection to EA? In 2005, Factorio would have been considered a "full" release already when it entered EA. Not all EA games are made the same, and some really do not deserve the EA moniker as an insult for their "unfinished" state. Same goes for Infinifactory btw, that game is basically already a fully released game.

I'm really into Indies games lately. My friend bought Dying Light for me but I betray him and play Darkest Dungeon instead. (lol)

I do not like AAA game that much except RPG genre.

Hey Baddy, throw a mention and link to the GOTY thread into the Sunless thread as well. Its also reference and quality measurementl :p

(And we gotta abuse that crossposting power)

Well, the thing is they will (probably) ad more to the game upon actual release right? i don't know what is exactly their plan but I assume they will do that anyway. I prefer to play the game when I know it is pretty much finished. I don't want to get bored of the game while playing the EA version. For example I bought Kerbal space program almost 2years ago and have not played it once!

Ps: I have not heard about infinifactory before, gameplay looks weird!

I have been into indies for a while now, 80% of my steam games are indies. Btw, how is Darkest Dungeon.

Already very fun, but THAT is a game you should avoid due to still being imbalanced and very much in progress.

(Go play Factorio already :p)

Quick Impressions: This game is NES authentic! The Demon from Ghosts N' Goblins makes a cameo, you have flying Medusa-likes, bullshit Ninja Gaiden platforming that even have sudden bullshit birds fly in to eff you up. It's glorious. No maps, barebones NES goodness. Combat feels great, lots of enemy variation, bosses are fun. Towns people are great. Even those times in NES games were devs were cruel and pretended to give you something real nice but then it turns out to be squat. Thankfully, the dev allows you to kill the bastard NPC trying to play tricks on you.

I know a lot of people give Nicalis shit, but damn you guys need to check this game out. REALLY GOOD.
