Refreshed the thread, and reading all the "but what do you do" and "this price is heresy for an INDIE game!!" posts again.

Wouldn't be a NMS thread without them!

/sigh

Edit: ^It's getting a release on PC same day. Sony stepped in on publishing after the VGX reveal and their unfortunate flood in early January 2014.

My head hurts after reading this thread.
It's absolutely infuriating how people flat out deny NMS' value without even giving it a fair chance. Where is the outcry when publishers release garbage like Thief for 60 bucks with a straight face?
Just give them the benefit of the doubt and wait for reviewers you trust in for crying out loud.

Doesn't marketing work the other way though?

I don't want to buy products unless the person selling the product creates a demand in me.

They have the burden of proof, so to speak.

Is this a typical thing; to announce when pre-orders go live for a digital game that cannot sell out?

They haven't announced nothing about pre order date, it was an error, pre order open in two days probably to coincide with the end of the previews embargo.

You sure that's how many planets there are? That's insane. Guess y'all can wait for price drop.

How does it work though? If you don't discover a planet, I mean. I mean, I'm lost at how the fuck it works! My mind can't process this number. It's scary.

It's the same with minecraft seeds basically. As far as I understand, there are about 18 quintillion unique worlds it can make. It has to do with 64 bit and math or something

You can play offline and discover all the planets in the game yourself, if you so choose.

Pretty sure Sean said you do not need PSN or PS+ to play No Man's Sky.

Unless they changed the game since then? I have no idea.

Last I heard you could play offline but you don't get to cash in any discoveries and earn credits until you connect to the server. In other words offline mode is pretty useless sadly :(

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
People are being unfair making the reactions to the price into something they aren't.

This isn't about indie vs. AAA games.

You are being 'unfair' in your interpretations of Hello Games' enthusiasm for their own video game.

Preorders for a games that we have no idea about? I am rather concerned about this game to be honest. It's been all smoke and mirrors so far with very bold claims.

There is no and there should not be a correlation between a game being Indie and its price.

No clue where you guys are getting this idea from.

I see no logic behind that.

Feel free to explain it to me though.

I've got $60, and Hello Games has for sale the space exploration game I've dreamed about since I was a wee lad.

This is actually true. For some reason, every time I see/hear about No Man's Sky, I think of the excellent Spaceman Spiff.

Does this mean PS4 exclusive now?

I thought they were self-publishing?

It will be on PC on day 1.

Maybe is self published on PC and Sony publishing PS4 version means physical version.?

Sony computer entertainment actually published games on steam before, like helldivers.

They will probably self publish on PC. Or have Sony publish it on PC like Helldivers.

Helldivers was published by PlayStation Mobile, Inc. , not Sony Computer.

It's in the eye of the beholder, both ways, I guess.

To some their marketing campaign has been tremendously effective, it seems.

To others it hasn't.

Fair's got nothing to do with it, but it will affect sales either way.

There's not much more to say than that.

Thanks for this.

It isn't even an indie game then!

People are being unfair making the reactions to the price into something they aren't.

This isn't about indie vs. AAA games.

It used to be, which is probably why the stigma still holds over to now. Everyone was introduced with it being an indie, and I doubt that most people are aware that it's not technically an indie anymore.

Wtf lol, do you realise what you just said?
You can buy and play this day 1 and still keep the money in your wallet up until release, as opposed to people who just throw it into a hole months in advance.

But what makes it diferent? What's the difference between NMS and Thief?

the only think you miss out I believe are planet and creature names. Those don't go live until you hit the server. Also any actual planet changes like deformation. You get all the other benefits of the game and don't need to connect ever to reap the in-game benefits of discoveries. Also, the game isn't going to lock you out on earning credits because you are offline.

Didnt we literally just have this same discussion with The Witness and its $40 price? You'd think people would be acclimated by now, with all the indie games releasing in the $25-$40 range

I'd note two things...

This isn't an indie game. Sony is publishing.

This doesn't cost $25-40. This costs $60.

Hey guys, this craftsman just asked way more for his table than IKEA! Can you believe it? I mean what an idiot. By the way, have you seen this dude Picasso's paintings? Man that guy is hilarious, thinking his stuff is creative!

Indie games do not have some intrinsic quality that make them worth less than the creations of bigger companies. They may play, look and sound better, or be more rich in content or tell a better story. Not to mention that what is "better" is subjective.

At 60, I am going to wait for a sale. Not because it is indie, but because the game doesn't look interesting to me enough to warrant that price.

It's just dumb that you are coming in here and saying they are bragging that the game was soooo easy to make and yet offer no proof of this. All the while moaning about it being $60 and published by Sony.

A beautiful looking game where you can explore an entire fucking galaxy...?

Oh wait, $60 looooooooooooool no thanks! That $60 will be far better spent on another AAA repeatedly-shoot-people-from-a-first-person-viewpoint / climb-all-of-the-towers simulator.

Man, there is so much I want to know about this game. How does multiplayer take place? How do space battles take place? How do you populate a newly discovered planet or Galaxy with players to battle around? Can you select random spots in the universe that you know are all undiscovered so you go on a 10 hour discovery journey?

This game is going to be a QA Tester hell. To think there will be 90% of map area that QA Tester will not get a chance to see is tough.

I hope there's a beta soon.

You can go back and read my posts where I wrote about them talking about their small dev. team, procedural asset generation and quick time from the start of programming to the first demo.

They did all of this in the first reveal video.

If the game ballooned into something else after it became a Sony product, that might not be all applicable now, but they haven't really shown evidence that it has either. I think it's still being pushed as that original vision?

This post isn't by me, it's by a guy with the same username as me.

Let me get this straight, if they self-publish it on PC it'll be a indie game?

So we can say that NMS is indie on PC, but mainstream on ps4?

I sure hope there aren't 18 quintillion torrent seeders on Day 1 too...

$60 is Pirate Bait.

They better lock it into Steam and lock it into an Online Server Authentication of some sort for the PC version.

EDIT - actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the PC version is cheaper than the PS4 version.

This is incredibly ballsy. I guess marketing will drop on or before March 3rd?

I believe reading about some press-only prevew-event a few days ago (or last week or something?) with upcoming Sony games and resulting embargoes; wouldnt surprise me if it features NMS.

I guess it depends on whether or not Sony funded the development, and to what degree.

These are always hazy terms.

With movies, for example, something like Birdman gets called an indie by some, even though it's put out by a subsidiary of Fox.
