If Paul Blart beats this fucking movie, then I don't know what to say anymore.

Also, nobody saw it.

This is one of those "facts" that gets repeated over the decades, but isn't really a reflection of reality.

Waterworld made $264M worldwide back in 1995, which was a top 10 WW finish for the year and probably equivalent to $600M+ in today's worldwide box office.

Even domestically, it earned $88M, which inflates to about ~$175M taking ticket price differences into consideration.

Waterworld's problem wasn't that no one saw it. It was the insane (for 1995) budget of $175M.

It would be like producing a $275M blockbuster today, only pretend that the Chinese, Russian, and most of the Latin American markets don't exist, and the Asian market outside of China is a third of its current size. How confident would you feel about hitting your break-even of $800M+ in that scenario?

Ah yeah. Gal Gadot will be fine if Wonder Woman turns out OK, but the rest... like Ray Fisher? Man do I feel bad for him. His.movie is probably gonna get scrapped.

True, the money is nice, but as an actor you'd want something more fulfilling.

They don't take these kinds of roles if they are looking for something fulfilling. They probably just want exposure and a payday. And something for their kids to watch them in.

This Justice League almost got made:

I dunno if it would be good but the already established justice league idea, immortan joe's Martian Manhunter and miller's action scenes would have been out of this world

Man I really wanted a pre-established dcu movie. Was hoping BvS would pull it off well but it sounds like it didn't. Got my hopes on suicide squad to do just that.

Edit: Ray Fisher is playing Muhammad Ali in that Ang Lee Boxing movie coming up. It seems like a role he was literally born to play I think that guy will be fine. Gadot tho...she's literally got nothing without wonder woman. Better hope that succeeds.

Film execs know when a film is bad too but it's their job to minimize the damage. Honestly I was a bit worried when I saw the release date, the end of march for a big blockbuster like this is a little worrying but I thought maybe they were just trying to put space between this and some of the other superhero/villain films this year.

They were initially going to release it at the same time as Civil War. Cap made them blink and they are probably thanking their lucky stars it wasn't a head to head. If Cap succeeds then the humiliation would be too much.

So it's obvious that it was mistake entrusting Zack Snyder of all fucking people with setting the tone and conceptualization of this universe. Who does WB turn to now? I still think Bruce Timm would be able to salvage all of this as a Producer.

Marvel execs are too busy snorting coke off the back of a $10,000 an hour whore to care.

DC still has the Dark Knight to hang its hat on, which remains better than any Marvel movies.

They need to just be smart and cut bait with Snyder and get competent directors like Marvel has.

Get Brad Bird. I know Tomorrowland sucked, but if Snyder got a do-over, someone needs to give Bird one

Once we start dropping down to 30 and below we can officially start going for comparisons of Disney Channel/Nickelodeon made-for-tv movies.

well not really...yet
At this point I am wondering why WB didn't just have an embargo til release day.

Did they think critical reception would not be as bad is it is?

Release Day embargo is sketchy, but it's got to do less damage than what is happening right now.

I think they genuinely thought it would be better received. Batfleck's performance must have impressed them. And to be fair, it impressed the critics too. It just wasn't enough to cover up the rest.

There were a handful of pre-release rumors/grumblings about how WB wasn't really sure about what they had with the movie. So maybe they didn't expect it to blow people away, but maybe also didn't expect it to get savaged like this either?

They definitely didn't expect this bad of a reaction. Sometimes, it's obvious a movie will bomb with critics, but it seems that this time, they truly didn't see this much hate coming.

WB knew the movie wasn't great, they invested millions on PR with early reactions and merchandise, but I don't think they expected a 33% at RT days before release.

Or maybe, they knew this was coming, but had no choice but to let reviews be published, as holding off until Friday or late Thursday would've been suspicious.

No good options, basically.
