No Man's Sky - August 9, 2016

I just went to the subreddit out of curiosity and read the pinned post "Delay Debacle & What We Do From Here".

One of the paragraphs in there actually starts:
Kotaku may have inadvertently caused No Man's Sky a gigantic headache, and they may have caused the game to delay even further than Hello Games wanted.

Wow. There really is a belief that the early leak of a delay caused a longer delay. I can't wrap my head around that.

Didn't you know that video game journalism is actually a powerful secret cabal with the power to influence game developers' will and cloud their minds? I thought everyone knew that

Damn it Jason.

I am happy they have delayed. So much stuff happening over the next few months for me, it will mean I can buy it with very little backlog.

It sucks it's delayed but they are a small team and a very ambitious project. It will hopefully be worth the wait.

Will Jason take $20 to leak Bully 2 coming out this fall?

With that kind of power Kotaku should be taking a percentage of every game they allow to be released. That's a pretty nice game you've got there, I'd hate to see it delayed indefinitely ...

I saw this too and they have since edited that part, they must have realized how ridiculous it was, the one part even said how it may have only been pushed back 3 days without the leak lol.

Okay, so I've collected myself. My thoughts.

- The delay is a great thing. It sucks fucking ass for people like me that have been waiting more than 2 years feverishly for it. But I dont blame Sean. I'd delay it too if the polish wasn't quite where I wanted it. He has an amazing idea here. Taking a big risk. So it needs to be right. That said, I cant wait to see Hello at E3 one last time (because lets be honest, it'll happen) and bring on August.

- The rumor being started. I'm frustrated by it, because what good did it do for ANYTHING other than bringing clicks to Kotaku. I've loved what Kotaku has become since a few years ago when Totilo turned things around. I dont see "Can we ban Kotaku?" posts anymore. And I respect and like most of the work that Jason does. But all this rumor story did was just cause confusion, anger, and sadness. And of course, 24 hours went by before a response from Sony/Hello could be landed on, which didn't help matters. It just feels kinda.... Tasteless. Sort of lighting the fire, watching it burn, and then when the whole thing has finally burnt down, celebrating how right you were. Most knew how right you were when it got published, (well if you've been following Kotaku and understand its track record with these sorts of things.) Look, I get it. Journalism, etc etc. But there's also an intent versus impact factor in what journalism does, that I feel is rarely ever considered.

You would rather have all your news from publishers instead of investigative journalism? That's ridiculous and dangerous.

Thinking about picking up Elite:dangerous while waiting.....is it worth $35 ?
It's nothing like NMS, but it's still a great game if you love space. The recent 1.6 update overhauled a lot of aspects of the game to try and fix the big criticisms it's had.

The only place that freaked out was the NMS subreddit. Everywhere else seemed to treat it like a standard rumor/leak. I don't see what's wrong with that?

Not necessarily. That depends on the news. Like I said, I respect Jason and Kotaku. They've had a lot of solid work. Certainly work I follow. But some investigative journalism just does more harm than good. In this case, it just caused a bunch of noise. What was the benefit of publishing the story other than site traffic? What did this story do other than cause confusion?

I run a youtube channel primarily focused on the game. The comment section was pretty hectic, confused, and even a bit angry when I talked about it two nights ago. Not very common in the core No Man's Sky community.

I still don't get the "there was only one delay" narrative that the post is running. Sean initially said the game would be coming out in 2015. That's straight from the horse's mouth. Not sure how that isn't official. Getting moved to 2016 after initially missing the 2015 window is a delay.

legacyzero, I understand where you're coming from, but if Sony wasn't willing to comment on the delay sooner, why is it Kotaku's fault for (accurately) letting us know about it sooner than Sony wanted to? For all we know, Sony could have waited even longer to confirm the delay, and the Kotaku/other rumors got them to show their hand sooner.

What is the alternative here? Jason has to wait for comment? Jason can't post investigative reporting? I mean, what's the benefit of any game reporting "scoops" to most people?

Give me a break. If it caused anyone that much confusion, anger, or sadness, I suggest a step back and a reevaluation.

I think my biggest disappointment with kotaku in all of this is that I can no longer post slowtaku images

Jason cut the shit, those images are great

You could always create a new one with a bunch of slowpokes and one ninjask or electrode or something to represent the speedy press sneak fuck

They should have said Sept 9th, then released it a month early and everyone is now happy!

I really just hope it's good at this point.

I preordered No Man's Sky on the PSN store but now I can't find it? Is this normal for delays? Thanks

Post on my phone for the first time, sorry about any mistakes haha

I've never seen people so worked up over a few weeks (I'm more talking about the subreddit than GAF). It's honestly sad and pathetic to see. The game is coming VERY shortly after it was supposed to. There are much more important things to worry about. Perpetuating the greasy neckbeard stereotype I guess.

If that's the good that came out of it, then I can get behind that. Wasn't there talk about Sony waiting until Monday?

I agree to a point. Maybe Jim Sterling puts it better than I can.

Yeah, I've never seen the subreddit be this strange. Normally that sub is pretty chill. And I'm not usually a frequenter of Reddit other than that sub because most of the rest of the site is pretty shitty.

The subreddit has always been filled with rabid fanatics. They're chill until you try to have any kind of discussion about critism or something negative. (Not talking about "what do you doooo" stuff and comment like those)

This event just brought it out more.

Edit: The Facebook group is even more crazy. Explorenms though, that's where it's at.

I can't even imagine the wrath that any video game reviewer who dares give this game a "low" score will incur from this group.

Would you say there's more fault to the community than the actual journalism then? Reporting is just reporting. To think Jason did something with malicious intent seems misguided, he was just breaking a story. In any other community this kind of stuff happens all the time (players getting traded in football, for example), but people don't blame the outlet for breaking the story. They're just getting the truth early.

Goddambit. It's only a month and a half, that's not that long (and laugh at the person who thinks kotaku is why it's a month rather than three days). The only thing sucky about this is the little warning we got which we should thank kotaku cause it's quite possible without the article they would have waited longer to say something. I mean they do seem to have a habit to hold on to not letting us know their plans have changed til way before we'd know by it just not being out then. They had maintained it would be out in 2015 or stayed silent about that changing until the end of the year when it was already obvious to anyone who wasn't living in denial.

Oh no, the community went stupid. Jason getting threats was just fucking terrible. And it's worse that Twitter just allows that shit to happen.

I'm just saying that maybe it's better sometimes to leave it to the publisher? That's terrible in a lot of cases, sure. But it would have reduced confusion and people going apeshit.

Not when the publisher seems to want to leave us in the dark until the last minute. I'm happy kotaku pushed their hand in actually saying something.

When the meat of your rumor story is "They havn't landed on a new date yet", I imagine that may have been why? Why force a hand that can't be forced yet? And you imply that Sony and Hello games left us in the dark deliberately for god-knows-why. You're making assumptions that they had anything but pure intent.

This is what I don't understand, how by now in 2016 people can still harass, threaten people online with impunity.

It's fucking terrible, and I believe it to be the core problem on why there's so much harassment in this industry, and in general.

Doesn't that happen a lot with any forum dedicate to one particular thing? It tends to attract the fanatics so you see that. Though I suppose some are better than others.

I wonder how badly it will compare to the gta fanbase (who called for a reviewer to be fired even though she said it was a good game and people should play it and gave it a good score but she dares put in a criticism about its treatment of females. And it was a well worded one and respectful of the game)

I'm glad, then. :) I didn't see anything about Sony waiting, but I also haven't been following too closely. Regardless, what's done is done now and I'm glad the new release date has been officially announced. I'm sure the game will be well worth the wait and live up to your every excitement for it and then some!
