No Man's Sky - August 9, 2016

I don't see that level of generalization. I see an acknowledgement of undesirable and hateful people inside a community of people surrounding a game that hasn't come out yet. Your defensiveness is unnecessary. Of course not every fan is sending death threats. The fact that any are means there is a problem in the community.

There are idiots in all gaming communities and No Man's Sky is no exception. The No Man's Sky community is one of the nicest I've been a part of. What I've noticed and clearly others have too is comments like this:

It's really strange. I've been trying to think of another game that's had part of the fanbase be as shitty as this one and I can't think of a single one.

I don't even understand why this game of all things managed to gather such a toxic fanbase.

That's a gross misrepresentation of the No Man's Sky community. It's just yet another way of crapping on the game. LBP had some real monsters in the community but it wasn't brought into sharp focus like this. Some people are tits but most people are nice.

Ok let me put it to you this way.

Do you consider yourself part of the same community because you're a gamer?

It's just a bunch of random idiots they don't represent anybody.

Woah, what? So if there is a guy who lives in my apartment building who writes angry abusive emails or posts on social media, my building has a problem and the community of the building is toxic? That seems to be a plainly ridiculous position. What am I misunderstanding?

I found the shooting the messenger response obnoxious. My understanding is that this is a genre of games that hasn't been done on console really. It's a genre that has only occasional entries. Fans of it are passionate and wait years between new titles (Elite, Privateer, Freelancer, X series, Elite Dangerous, NMS).

You'd have a point if this were an isolated incident, but it's not. We've been seeing this type of behavior, or at least the most visible portion, go on for several years now.

It's more like the tenants the landlord keeps putting in their apartment are often meth dealers. Sure, most of them are fine people, but there's a pattern that we keep seeing not only in the gaming community but internet community in general.

Jesus, are people really calling the NMS community toxic?? The only remotely toxic activity I see regularly is people who respond negatively to people asking "What you do in NMS?"

Fuck outta here. Any community will have it's shitty members. But the large majority have been fantastic. I mean fuck, I run a Youtube channel primarily focused on the game, and that can be one of the most toxic places. Yet I get nothing but respectful comments with the occasional jerk.

Hell, even CobraTV has many many more subscribers than I do and he's be doing this since the game's reveal, and he rarely gets a shitty commenter (at least until the shit hit the fan this week).

And yes, even the subreddit has been fantastic until chaos hit this week, and the behaviors have ranged from confusion, to overreaction, all the way to hatred. But I'll be clear in the fact that the NMS community is largly amazing. So you nailed it Gribble.

Yes let's ignore this, pretend it's just some extremists and everything is A OK!
It is some extremists, but it's not OK. I can't believe the gaming community, I can't believe you're a part of that.

Such a shame.

No Man's Sky is a game it's part of the gaming community, I'm trying to get people to see why putting people all in the same group is a terrible idea.

So let me get this straight- you're attacking the word "Gamer", calling it all around toxic because of a small group of terrible people within that crowd?

The word toxic seems to have turned toxic.
It has now been used more on this single page than it has been pages 1-7 (posts 1-700)

I was arguing against the broad claim made the other poster. The point that I bolded.

I am not claiming that only one person has done it. Your analogy is still broken. One, the role of a landlord is not similar to a moderator. Anonymity vs credit checks, face to face interaction, etc. Plus those threats are being made outside of the "building."

No read my earlier posts, I was basically acting the same as them so they realize what they're doing. That's exactly what they're doing to the No Man's Sky community.

Really hard to communicate that on the internet, sorry if I offended anyone.

Ok.

But what good is that doing? What do you think that accomplishes other than creating more noise?

It hopefully stops people from singling out people who like the game, what other motive is there. That's basically what this thread was turning into.

Your posts have been toxic for this thread. You choose to focus on something that bothered you personally somehow (I assume you didn't make any threats, so the discussion isn't about you), because you saw it as a generalisation, rather than on the elephant in the room, that both the creator of the game and a journalist received death threats. Because that's important, your feelings.

Not sure what's going on, it appears No Man's Sky isn't listed in the PS4 pre-order section of the PSN store.

But it's still listed as purchased in my purchase history.

I don't think anyone really means to say that literally every single No Man's Sky fan is bad. Many people say "fanbases are bad" all the time, and it's usually referring to a prominent/loud group of people who in actuality don't really represent most of the people who are fans of said thing. Saying "most NMS fans" is more specific and makes the statement more wrong though.

The only thing I'll give the NMS community in general is that they're particularly chill when it comes to just being excited about the game together, but there's always been a problem of over defensiveness in the community, like the game is scared and should never be "slandered". The stuff going on now is just a product of that. It always existed, this just revealed it more.

Did you actually read this thread?

65daysofstatic's pushed back the soundtrack release too. It's now out alongside the game in August as it would have been in June.

There can be no Ryu without Ken. No Bubble without Bobble. No Guybrush without Le Chuck. No Cloud without Sephiroth. No Mario without Luigi…

& so it’s only right our NMS soundtrack is pushed back a little to August, to coincide with the @NoMansSky release)

You can still pre-order it right now though, if ya wanna. It’ll be worth the wait. Promise.

1) Wanting a game isn't the same as being excited about a game. If you've never been excited about a game, I can't help you.

2) It's not a matter of whether one would "rather have a broken game" but would "rather the makers have been competent enough to deliver when they said they would." If you had a project for school, would you tell your teacher "Hey, would you rather have a finished report or this first draft?" The delay isn't a force of nature that just occurred. They weren't able to complete their work when they said they would. And since we are consumers and not a teacher or a boss, we're powerless in this situation other than expressing feelings (I am not talking about stuff like those messed up death threats or any sort of attacks, Ugh). So we might express that we are upset that they didn't deliver. It doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. But neither is your confusion that other people might not think the same way as you.

What are you on about?
And since we are consumers and not a teacher or a boss, we're powerless in this situation
Teachers and bosses?
I am not talking about stuff like those messed up death threats
No, seriously, WT are you on about?! Are you on drugs? Do you realize what the topic is about? We are talking about delayed video games and you are talking about that?! I'm glad you made it clear it wasn't about fucking death threats we were talking about!

The biggest shocker to me in all of this is how there's NMS "fans" when nobody's even played the game yet.

Which is why stadium crowds consist entirely of professional athletes and why people clearly dont understand the definition of fan

Seriously, I'm sure everyone who is a fan of No Man's Sky is making death threats.

You guys seriously can't see the toxicity in your generalization?

Edit: to add substance to this post: I don't think anyone in this thread is saying all NMS fans are horrible people. We're simply of the opinion that if that sort of stuff happens within the NMS community, it shouldn't be condoned. It is indicative of the community that that sort of stuff would happen because of a game delay. And it's not just one person, Sean Murray said he got tons of death threats.

"There will be shitty people in any community" is one of the worst excuses, and shows that the person saying it isn't interested in solving the problem.

I think that NMS has gotten people really invested in the game. Looking at the reddit or watching Cobra videos, they pour over every detail because Sean is very careful about what he reveals. We've done this in the GAF threads too. This happens with every anticipated game, but people are really wrapped up in the potential of NMS. Not saying this is a bad thing per se, but people can go overboard.

So when you have a bunch of people really fervent in their excitement, where the game is so close to release and then delayed, some people are going to flip their shit because they've invested themselves too heavily in the game. And when you have an unmoderated place like reddit where these people can spin each other up, you're going to get people acting with toxicity and hate. And some who have life and mental issues are going to lash out in very antisocial ways. It's not really about the game for these people, it's almost if Sean is taking away their only hope of happiness. It's a sad situation for people that have completely lost perspective like that, but it's also dangerous. Anyone who is running a game community should have a zero tolerance policy for behavior like that.

I disagree with the defensiveness comment though; the NMS community has been subjected to a constant drone of "what do you even do" and "this game looks like trash" comments over the past couple years. Of course people are going to push back a bit when people shitpost like that. I think at least on GAF the "fans" have been open to criticism, for the most part.

Wow, I had no idea 65daysofstatic were doing the soundtrack for this, that's awesome.

Yeah, they've worked with Hello to create a procedurally-generated ambient soundtrack during the game. The "proper" album is more of a normal 65days album that was inspired by NMS, though I think at least a couple songs are used in the game.

Internet is sick. Games are purely for entertainment. There are other things to do while waiting a new game come out. Like going out and have a drink or two. Meet some people, copulate. It's Summer. Bloody idiots.

And these are the game's fanboys not some conzole warriorz from the opposite side. Sick, just sick.

Internet is sick.

Read my previous comment. I'm not even talking about the "what do you do" stuff.

1 more E3 of NMS then.

I feel Sorry for Sean. He clearly didn't want us to know anything about this game but pressure has made him have to reveal things. Can you imagine if he'd held onto all that we know now? You boot it up and all you know is you're on a planet and need to find resources for you ship to travel to other planets. You climb up a hill and suddenly you're confronted by a building. Remember, you didn't know there was buildings. Excited, you hurry to the building and find you can enter it. More excitement. On entering it you find an NPC. Mind blown.

What a pity. I'd love to have had that moment and many others.

Uhh... Your mind would be blown to see basic game mechanics in the game? Are the expectations for this game really that low?

Of course there is and the individual's need to be held responsible, not a generalized lump of people.

Look how posters on here reacted when I pointed out that No Man's Sky is a game, which means that anyone apart of that community is a part of the gaming community like it or not.

Does that make us responsible for their actions, of course not. Does it make us capable of their actions, not at all.

Don't understand this. They literally explained why it's delayed and we've seen video from IGN that looked great. They just want to polish it.

I mean did you think Mirrors Edge or Uncharted 4 had serious issues because of their delays?

It's only delayed a month and a half. That time can only be to polish the game.

If it was a serious issue, it probably wouldn't take a month and a half to fix and would have more so been delayed to 2017.

A game going gold, manufacturing, and shipping to warehousing for distribution to retail alone takes 3 weeks in of itself.

What "serious" issues you think a small dev with an ambitious project would manage to fix in a mere 4 weeks prior to gold.

Just something to think about.
Thanks for the responses. I see where you both are coming from, but personally it just worries me that a delay is necessary to polish up stuff. Especially since the delay is so last-minute.

It may very well still be a good game. And if it is, the reviews will still say that and I'll still buy it. But last-minute delays like this one simply worry me.

Why are you here condemning people for having an opinion about the community you're defending than off in the community condemning the supposedly small tiny itty bitty part of your community? If it was just a tiny part, why aren't they drowned out by all the loud voices of the supposed awesome people? Eject them from the community, make them not welcome. But no, you foster them. Make excuses. Disavow them publicly but still let them stay. It's much more important to find people talking about the community and tell them to stop. While those posts abusing Jason get upvoted in the awesome community.

Well do you want to eject they are part of your community too, I don't associate with those people and neither do you. I don't post on reddit or even follow Sean on twitter. The individual's are responsible if you start to blame a community where does it stop?

Why can't people understand this, generalizing does nothing except create more victims. You and I have as much in common with those assholes as the No Man's Sky community. You have no power over them and neither do I.

Anyway I give up looks like try as I might I just can't communicate this. I won't post here again.

I'm completely baffled at how or why a person would threaten the life of another person over a video game. Release the game with bugs, "Burn them at the stake!", delay the game, "Off with their heads!".

With as much bitching and moaning developers have to listen to on top of having their lives threatened, it's honestly a wonder that any of them stay in the business.

To Sean & Hello Games, and really any other developer out there, thank you for putting up with all of our shit and not giving up. Not all of us are so completely depraved that we feel the need to threaten you when we're disappointed.
