In your opinion, the oldest game that has yet to be outclassed in its genre?

super smash bros melee
16 yrs later people still discovering new things, and the ceiling is still raising.

(accidental competitive success is still valid right?)

I can't think of anything to top Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger here in terms of age. Among genres that haven't been discussed much here, though, these three come to mind:

- Grim Fandango (1998). Technically not a point-and-click with its original tank controls, but you know what I mean when I refer to the LucasArts-style adventure game, driven by dialogue trees and puzzle solving by way of zany, out-of-the-box item combinations. The adventure genre died with it for a while, and even when it was revived in the form of nostalgia projects and the Telltale subgenre that dropped logic puzzles in favour of branching story choices, it wasn't quite the same thing.

Still have to play this after all this time.

But! Indirectly you reminded me of Planescape: Torment, the champ of dialogue driven WRPGs. And for that, I thank you.

I dare you to show me a better flight combat game.

Easy

Probably the best story telling in a videogame on top of the best flight combat that all others hail from.

SOTN is a good one. There are lots of great Metroidvania's since, but that one is hard to top.

Not particularly controversial, but SFIII 3rd.
.

Well, not in this thread, but until SF5 pissed everyone off, no SF game was simultaneously loved and hated as 3S. It's a very polarizing game.

I don't care for it, really.

World of Warcraft for MMOs. So many games tried to be the "WoW killer" and none succeeded.

This is legit. Since 2006-7 every MMORPG that launched was trying to beat WoW, and none of them were successful because even if they did things better WoW has always been the most complete MMO experience you can find. Blizzard might not come up with all the best and most original ideas, but they definitely implement them the best.

Third Strike is VERY far from any universal acclaim in the FG community, but it's just an opinion thread anyway.

For me, Wipeout 2097, Rock'n Roll Racing, Guild Wars 1, Xenogears.

Came here to post this. Might be overtaken with AC7, hopefully but not likely.

I was going to say this, Super Metroid and Super Punchout.

SNES was killing it.

Super Metroid is still playable today, but is objectively outclassed by the GBA Metroid games. I know people want to put that game on a pedestal but the moon jumping controls kill it compared to those. There's a reason why the AM2R game followed the GBA control style.

In my opinion, while AC4 is still a very solid game (it was one of my first PS2 games), I still feel as if AC5 takes everything that 4 did right and expands upon it from the more varied mission objectives to the more fleshed out cast of characters and storyline to the whole squad command mechanic.

Chrono Trigger (1995). There have been many great JRPGs since, but there's still nothing that great.

I can make an argument for Sonic 3 & Knuckles (1994) as well, although some recent 2D platformers (DK:TF) challenge the throne. Also, complicated by the fact that the Mario Galaxy games are better, so you have to split platformers into 3D and 2D...

Genre kings come and go in this business, either because those games failed to change with the times and their imitators have not, OR because their successors were just that much better.

But there are games that have remained fixed on their respective thrones for an obscenely long time, inversely, because the competition just sucks or due to the one harsh truth that perfection simply cannot be improved upon.

That right there is my pick. Released in 2005 and has kept the crown since.

For those of you lamenting over the old WWF/WCW games on the N64, let me say I was once one of you. I thought the genre was dead for good, buried forever inside a coffin hand-built by Yukes. Then I downloaded this little title begrudgingly, along with the accompanying WCW/WWF/ECW packs from another site, and played around with it one weekend...

There's no going back. Hell, there's no going forward. Hands down, the best wrestling game in existence. With the extra packs, you get virtually all the wrestlers, their moves, finishers, and even entrance themes.

2005.

12 years, the undisputed king of wrestling games.

Fire Pro is indeed king of all wrestling games. I can't wait for World to come out.

Until I played PREY I'd have said System Shock 2.

So instead I'll go with Hitman Blood Money - With respect to Hitman 2016, mind - It's a close one but Blood Money beats it on current amount of content.

Err, does Hitman count as Immersive Sim? I mean this is a "genre" wide enough that some people squeezed Bethesda RPGs into the label somehow.

Some contenders:
God Hand - 3D beat em up
Battle Garegga or DoDonPachi or Ikaruga - shmup
Outrun 2 - arcade racer

The GBA control layout is so overrated. Having to hold down the shoulder key to fire missiles at the expense of a positional hold key is a major no-no, especially when dangling from the ceiling ladders. Always have to keep from accidentally moving/changing firing direction when I'm just trying to fire away at the boss from the ceiling.

Final Fantasy Tactics

wut

The game it is based off of was superior.

Fusion is a bad game and the expanded story for the other GBA game is unecessary garbage.

Interesting topic. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is still my favorite Metroidvania.

My favorite game in pretty much any other genre is from 2000 or later. Videogames have come a long way.

I completely understand why 3rd is not everyone's cup of tea. It's not the most "pleasant" of fighting games, didn't have the benefit of modern balancing schemes, on and on. Plenty of folks I respect firmly believe SSFIIT or USFIV or even Alpha 3 to be superior, but I'm trying to go with the total experience including aesthetics and presentation. I don't think many would argue against it being the most visually appealing Street Fighter game, for example. I hope that makes sense.
