Microsoft generates loss here in Germany regularly. For example, they are selling the X here from time to time for 250€ and even less bundled with up to two games.
And if a Lockhart does really exist, imo this thing won’t print money, it will be a nice product nothing more, like the Xbox One All Digital.

So PCB leak was old devkit with of the shelf parts (and does it even make sense, to use a Phison controller on it?) or it wasn't related to ps5, and people have been throwing the 316mm dye size calculation ... based on inaccurate information!?Just to add a bit more MS is using the SSD controller from Phison not the SSD itself.
The controller MS will probably use is that chip on PCB:
Sony is using it own custom chip so they will put it inside the APU ou ask some fab like TSMC to produce it to put on PCB.

Also, you don't need to buy as many studios when you already own or have built over years a larger number of internal game development studios than any other platform holder...
PS3 Vs 360 was debatable in terms of performance. The 360 had a better GPU and memory architecture. The PS3 had vastly superior compute.
And the PS4 not only had a larger GPU, that GPU had 4 times the number of asynchronous compute engines that the XB1, which enabled it to better compensate for it's extremely weak CPU, and it had a superior memory architecture. The PS4 was a fantastically designed machine.
In that same sense the XB1X was an excellently designed machine.

I haven't gotten round to it yet but from what I hear it's a game that takes a good 10hrs to really take off, I wonder whether a lot of mainstream reviewers didn't have the attention span..

I don't know... most leaks says Sony is using a custom SSD solution so it is probably not Phison controller if it is custom.
Xbox seems to using a Phison controller.
It is possible to include that custom SSD controller as a unit inside the APU but that is maybe hard to do... MS added a lot of DMA and Sound controllers in Xbox One APU.
So Sony can do the same or just use the custom chip on PCB like MS will do with his Phison SSD controller.

LTT just did a video water cooling an SSD that has a Phison controller. Was getting 5GB/s writes.

That's all we have to judge it on right now so I don't understand what your point is really. And I don't think it looks rough. It just looks less than impressive in pretty much every aspect considering it's supposedly a next gen exclusive.

I think the lighting and particle effects are nice at least. Not a lot of footage to go on otherwise. Interested in seeing the "loot" etc. So is this like lords of the fallen with aesthetics similar to darksiders?

amd has been putting a lot into chiplet research because being able to use multiple chips as if they were one chip is the best way to keep pushing power as we edge closer to the end of die shrinks. IDK if it is mature enough for a console, but maybe for AMD’s next Nvidia Killa XT?
I am going to guess that sony has gone with a very expensive console setup with which they hope to drastically reduce the costs if quickly. So, superfast ssd and 3 chiplet ‘apu’ (2xgpu + cpu), hence pachters $1k comment. And while expensive at launch, all three parts should be much cheaper xmas 2021.
‘it’ is their competition.
MS is acquiring IP and assets which they will leverage hard to dominate and control and profit. It is what they do in all areas of their businesses. For whatever reasons, gaming is now seen as a profit driver in the future, whereas in the past it was merely tolerated as a gates‘ whim.
it doesnt always work, of course, just look at Nokia purchase. However, there they were competing against other American corporations. It is much easier for American companies to kill foreigner corps they want to kill then other Americans ones who have their own power in Washington.
I predict by 2027, MS #1 in gaming, Tencent #2, Nintendo #3, Sony #4. But, this only applies if Apple remains a hater of gaming.
appl chip design team is best in the world, and they have pushed things far enough that they could easily make consoles superfluous. A12X has more gaming power than x1s and is close to ps4. Make a tv dock, release an official controller, and invest in making it easy for ports (or just buy Nintendo), and we have the ultimate gaming platform with a massive install base that will never defect. Next appl chip on 5nm wont be that far behind next gen. That way, people like me can use their $1000 phones and ipads to play everything. I‘d way rather do that then buy a gaming pc or dedicated hardware.
I don’t think that will happen until Cook retires though, as he is part of the Ballmer/Jobs school wrt gaming.

I understood what you said, my point is, if Phison confirmed they are not supplying Sony with their controllers like wrightiswright said (he didn't provide a link), then the PCB leak is inaccurate or it's not ps5 related. And that's where team Gonzalo got their ps5 316mm die calculations.

I looked backed at what Cerny said in the Wired article. Here's the excerpt:

However, he does try to express himself from the perspective of an end-user in parts of that article, so I dunno.
Would be great if Sony had an exotic solution that goes beyond PCIe 4.0, but it's probably not needed as a 16x leap in performance more than justifies a generational leap.

but then the game takes off and it beame one of the best written games ive played this gen. its like they switched writers in the middle or something. i'd rank it above U4 in terms of writing and characterization. its that good. If it wasnt for GOAT protagonist Arthur Morgan, Deacon would be my favorite new lead this gen.

They didn't mean "not available on PC" as in a proprietary standard. They just meant that in regards to commercial consumer drives hitting their internal numbers for drive testing. It's still PCIe 4.0, they could technically get 6 GB/s with three lanes effectively.
The question would be what kind of drive they go with to accomplish that which is economical; if the PCB leak is true, then they might be doing a custom 3D NAND soldering to the board, which is what some of us figured would be the case, emulating AMD's SSG card line. And they might still have a second M.2 slot for user-optional SSDs.
As for Sony going with an exotic solution, really there isn't anything they could create that probably doesn't already exist in some form. There are rival interconnect standards such as Rapid IO, which offer more bandwidth per lane than PCIe 4.0 (3.125 GB/s vs. 2 GB/s), but Rapid IO is usually seen in data centers, telecommunication systems and military equipment. It also facilitates chip-to-chip connections where connections on both ends can be seen as master devices, unlike PCIe where one end is seen as the master device and the connecting device is seen as the slave device, such as a GPU card.
But I don't think that'd be required for a game console to get sufficient big drive speed. PCIe 4.0 is already supported by default in AMD processors, and if they went with something like Rapid IO they'd need a PCIe switch to offer compatibility with PCIe-based drives and peripherals, which have an overhead cost/penalty. Basically it'd be esoteric for the sake of being esoteric, not for practicality.

Actually, chiplets have nothing to do with pushing more power as we reach the physical limitations of silicon.
It's an economic measure to keep the die size small, in order to increase yields on a wafer, thus keeping cost down, therefore allowing viable products to actually enter the market at a reasonable cost.
Look at the new 64-core Threadripper. That has 8 x 8-core chiplets. Imagine all those cores on a single monolithic die. If a single core fails upon testing, you'd end up wasting huge amounts of silicon wafer.

Yeah, why not? Node size has nothing to do with die size. The same 64-core threadripper at 7nm in a monolithic die would probably cost over $10k+ due to the amount of failures. Those failed chips could be binned and sold as 60-core, 58-core, 54-core processors etc., but they'd just end up being Intel in that case.
