The hype season has started and people are gonna be disappointed like always. I wish Sony released a 700-800€ beast but it's not happening. They're gonna play it safe and the pro will be a modest upgrade.

PS5 Pro could be RDNA 1 for all I care.

If anything the PS5 launch has taught us is that:
  1. "Full RDNA 2" or 3 or 4 doesn't matter as much.
  2. Sony and Cerny know how to design hardware.
As long as Cerny is working on it, I have complete faith in him.

I don't doubt that Cerny will deliver whatever specs he, Sony and AMD decide upon. I also don't doubt wherever the specs land, the Pro will punch above its weight.

I don't understand how Sony hasn't put an end to this type of Tom Henderson leak, the guy is gutting their entire business strategy by announcing things wrong and half doing a commercial damage and creating a bad image of an unfinished product, Nintendo still doesn't know nothing has leaked to him about Switch 2 and PS5 pro we already know up to some specs 16 months before its supposed launch.

The X can't even beat the standard PS5 regularly. It will get killed by a PS5 Pro....

And it would be still handicapped by the existance of the Series S that has mandatory support

3rd party titles are not a good measure since its all about the developer's choices on what to optimize for.

The X is more than enough for first party titles, and there is plenty of power/features for a 3rd party that wants to exploit it.

There is zero need for mid gen upgrades since we haven't even seen games that maximize the currently available hardware... its mostly a money grab

Tom Henderson is reporting this BECAUSE Sony let's him do it....

He wouldn't risk losing a good relationship with Sony, breaking an embargo on confidential information....

It makes zero deference for actual sales. the xbox machine can be 3x more powerful and the PS would still outsell it 5:1 or whatever

Well whose fault is that?

Certainly not mine.

Anyways its part of remaining competitive. Plus it makes sense for both systems and for those that want a console with extra oomph.

I wonder if Sony could be swinging for the fences more this time and be looking to make something like a $700 Pro after seeing how long the second-hand market prices for PS5 remained high. That could’ve given them confidence that there’s a bigger market willing to pay way more for a Pro this time.

You know what PS5 Pro won't run?

Age of Empires II.

My Xbox is gonna keep getting work. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

(can't wait for PS5 Pro doe for rillz, day 1)

Yeah 100% no. Obviously i dont have facts to back it up, just think its too big of a jump. If its even close to that though, be hell of a machine for a midgen upgrade.

rofif rofif should bookmark it and see how close it gets. I reckon the PS6 isnt too far-fetched but definitely not the Pro.
My guess the pro is roughly 30 tf based on this year's cards. We might get more but alot of AI acceleration will also be huge next gen

That would make the gap between PS5 Pro and PS6 a bit small, don’t you think?

While I don't believe that rumor simply because I generally avoid believing rumors... even if I talk about them, how far-fetched is that?

Is it, not the exact same thing they did with the PS4? On that, they simply doubled the CUs in the PS4 to get the PS4pro. So, why is it so hard to believe that they could just double CU on PS5 to get the PS5 Pro?

And the RAM thing, that's honesty the only part I feel is off, as I would expect them to sooner do what they did with the PS4pro, which was to add 1GB of DDR3 RAM. On the PS5pro, that could be 4GB of DDR5 RAM. So keep the 16GB GDDR6 the same, and add 4GB of DDR4 exclusively for the OS. A better and cheaper way to increase RAM or the entire system.

Honestly, i couldn't give you a good answer.

I just prefer to lowball and not aim too high with expectations. Id love to be wrong.
I try to keep up with all this chatter but can't tell you what it could possibly have.

My thoughts and i might sound stupid. (Im fine with that) Can they always just double this and that and throw it in console form? Is the tech available? It does sound too good to be true, no?

Did they double the CUs for PS5?

Adding another pool of RAM will start to complicate things like the Series X.
Don't forget the game runs on the OS.

Only place more DDR will go, is towards the SSD cache.

What they could probably do it increase available ram for games by adding some DDR4 ram dedicated for some OS functions. This would reduce OS footprint on main 16GB GDDR6 pool. This is what they did on PRO.

Nope, they didn't. Which is why actually believe that its something they can do. They doubled CU going from PS4 to PS4pro, but used the same CU count of the PS4pro for the PS5. While MS went from 44CU on the XB1X 56CU on the XSX.

Nope. It's the same thing they did with the P4pro, the pt the GDDR5 RAM identical to the OG PS4 but added 1GB of DDR3 RAM. I can see them using the same approach here, keeping the 16GB GDDR6 the same and with fasterRAMchips, then adding 4GB of DDR4 RAM. The die and board complexity to do that is actually less than `just adding more GDDR6 and as such, a wider bus.

Anyways, don't now what the will do... just guessing.

PS5 Pro is already rumored to have 60 or 54 active CUs, which does not double PS5 36 CUs. So that doubling CUs methodology is out the window.

This is the reason for that additional 1GB of RAM.
PlayStation 4 technical specifications
Overall unified system memory architecture was improved, with the addition of another 1 GB segment of DDR3 DRAM. The PS4 Pro could use this increase in memory to swap out non-gaming applications that run in the background, like Netflix and Spotify. As a side benefit to this, an additional 512 MB of GDDR5 was available for developers to use for games adding up to 5.5 GB, as opposed to the 5 GB available on base PS4 hardware.

Why would the PS5 Pro need an additional 3.5GB of DDR for that when the PS5 already does it with 512MB of DDR and SSD?
  • PS4 & Slim: 256 MB DDR3 RAM (for background tasks)
  • Pro: 1 GB DDR3 RAM (for background tasks)
  • PS5: 512 MB DDR4 RAM (for background tasks)

It is hard because Tom Henderson has already reported that the PS5 Pro will be 30WGPs/60CUs. End of the story.

He certainly knows his shit regarding future Sony hardware, having leaked the Q-Lite, DualSense Edge and various accessories, so there's absolutely no reason to doubt his reporting.

Hey... I am firmly in the 60CU camp... just opining on the 72CU thing as something that really wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being true. Being that before that whole 60CU leak... doubling from 36 o 72 was what I and probably everyone else thought they would do with a PS5pro.

For the same reason, they did it on the PS4 Pro. Increasing PS5 DDR from 512 to 2GB or even 4GB, would have the exact same effect for the PS5pro it had for the PS4pro. Move more of the OS to the DDR which in turn makes more of the faster (and more expensive) GDDR6 RAM available for games. Right now, the PS5 reserves a rumored 2.5GB of its 16GB GDDR6 RAM for the OS. Increasing that 512MB DDR4 to 2-4GB could literally be reeing up GB of GDDR6 ram.

Relax... if you have read anything I have said to this point, you would know where I stand.

All I am simply saying is that if I were l told or we were to find out that the PS5pro has 72CU... it wouldn't surprise me.

And as for people knowing their shit... I am sorry, but I look at all this as nothing more than a rumor. And would not take anything said now any more seriously than I would take something else. So to me everything (within reason) is open to discussion.

No. Too expensive and complex notably for BC. What they could do is increase I/O speed combined with a small DRR4 additionnal ram, like 2GB. It would perfectly sufficient to improve ram usage for games.
Clearly you have minimal knowledge of this stuff.

All RAM does is temporarily store data where it can be accessed, which is much several times faster than storing on the SSD. It doesn't effect BC unless it's less than what the game needs.

That DDR RAM is for the Auxiliary processor, which is used for background functions and OS features such as downloading stuff.

The PS4 includes a secondary ARM processor (with separate 256 MiB of RAM) to assist with background functions and OS features.

All Sony did was gave the Auxiliary processor on PS4 Pro more RAM so it doesn't use the GDDR.

On PS5, this Auxiliary processor is the SSD controller and it has enough RAM already. Why would downloading something in the background need 2GB of RAM?

Adding another 32-bit GDDR 6 PHY memory controller just plain better.
Microsoft did it with the XBSX.
10 32-bit GDDR 6 PHY on XBSX vs 8 on PS5.

Either they go 20GB of unified RAM or find a way to make all the 16GB usable cuz if not they can just scrap the console.
Next-gen consoles already have a very mediocre amount of usable RAM for next-gen standards, y'all just fail to realize it cuz it's disguided as "16GB of VRAM".

The PS5 has 16GB of memory, of which 12,5GB are usable. 12,5GB of VRAM sounds good right, but y'all gotta remember that these systems share memory with the CPU too tho, so in reality when you put that amount into perspective it's not really that much usable memory.

A 2023 low end PC already has more usable combined RAM than next-gen consoles if it has a 16GB of RAM + 6GB of VRAM combo.

Add a Pro console with better RT capabilities plus beefier GPU and 12,5GB with lackluster bandwidth speed just won't cut it anymore, even 16GB of usable RAM would be just the bare minimum. And no, having an ultra-fast SSD doesn't make up for the lack of usable RAM.

No console that ever existed punched "above its weight". It only looks like that because PCs perform so pathetically worse in comparison that you wonder where your 2500 USD you paid for the GPU went. Consoles aren't magic, it's just that PC gaming is garbage peformance/efficiency wise.

No need for condescending tone here. In the end the additionnal ram is used by the OS for some functions so more GDDR6 ram is given to the games. A similar thing could be done on PS5 Pro.

And you are the one telling me I have no knowledge about it? MS can get away with this because their BC implementation is at the software level (with varying level of success BTW). Sony need perfect hardware accuracy, latencies etc for their hardware BC implementation. Besides on XSX they have added memory contention problem with, let's call it, virtual splitted memory configuration. It's not ideal when you need perfect latencies for a hardware BC implementation.

But even so Sony wouldn't do this because it would be too expensive to change the memory bus.
