Phil Spencer: announcement this week

People hoping for microsoft to go third party and/or stop making consoles will be very, very disappointed. They've just acquired Activision for 70billion and it's a chump change for them. Something Sony can only dream of being able to do.

If I was a betting man, I'd say Sony will cease to exist long before microsoft, even in the video games space.

Spending $70 billion comes with the expectations of returns, which Xbox clearly aren’t hitting. Microsoft typically doesn’t let a division stick around if it’s floundering.

It really is bizarre the more I think about it. Zero communication on it for this long while also not denying it. And its absolutely damaging things.

If they are okay with things eroding to this point for this long, its because theres no going back to how things were being run prior to this.
I'd imagine the contracts already signed guarantee that this is happening one way or another (I also imagine Microsoft is smart enough to realize it can weather the storm of nerds losing their shit on Twitter for a couple of weeks if it means a better business in their gaming division long-term). I'd bet contracts with Sony and Nintendo guarantee to some degree that these game ports aren't one-offs; what I mean is, perhaps Sony and Nintendo have Microsoft commit to a certain number of games or a certain number of years, so that Microsoft can't do something like port Hi Fi Rush or Starfield but then hold back sequels in the future. That probably wouldn't make sense to do anyway, but it also would mean a contract is a contract and business is business no matter how mad the dweebs doing free PR for Microsoft all these years get.

Keep dreaming, man....

So, new rumour. After the complete fuck up that was this entire week. Hardware is dead, all games are multiplatform.....

...we now are getting new hardware and games staying exclusive.

I might just quit interacting about video games, just play what I want and stay as far away as possible from Internet lunatics.

0 chance they announce a new console. If anything it’ll be a new controller or the shitty all digital.

There is a near 0% chance that no game makes it other platforms. Phil would have debunked that with a tweet.

its simple math, Xbox market share its the lowest that had ever been and they just bought Activision/King for u$75b, they need to cash from that acquisition or shareholders ll go mad.

As I said in another thread, XBOX is no longer as relevant as it used to be ( X360 era ), the best way for them to remain relevant in the market is to go third party.

in short Xbox turns into Sega next Wednesday
The event will be wednesday?

What’s the exact date of the event
There probably isn't going to be an "event", the best you can probably hope for is a video of Phil Spencers cheesy grin stating "We're excited about the future of xbox, stay tuned in the summer for further information on our great library of games"

I know this seems incredibly silly with the state of the news that's leaked, but I would honestly bet on this being Microsoft's stupid response to it all

I think you are about half right, which half though?

What have you heard about this handheld, are they going after the switch or legion go type devices?

If its the switch then Microsoft can sure pick their battles. 20 years trying to beat Sony in the console space now they want to take on Nintendo in the handheld market.

The handheld is most likely going to be a gamepass streaming only solution, i'd be very surprised if it ran games natively

There have been a lot of people getting aggravated with me talking so much about stuff like this so think I am not going relay stuff here as much moving forward

That said I kept telling people Xbox wasn't leaving the hardware business and was doubling down with more ways to play next gen but no one picked up on it

I even posted how Phil Spencer liked a Jez article on Xbox needing a handheld but no one picked up on it

To what it will do I honestly don't know

The question is did MS pull the plug on everything I have been saying since Aug?

I don't know that either

People will always knee-jerk. You can't let it get to you. You have knowledge and your insights are valuable.

It helps to have some grounding in this whirlwind. But I agree with you in that it's really a question if Microsoft got hit with the whirlwind harder than anyone else right now.

I'm sure there were massive shifts planned, but they didn't expect the leaks. I wonder if there's any credence to this stuff being leaked by those who were laid off? Maybe looking for a bit of revenge on their way out the door.

And here I was thinking that this Xbox craziness would be the thing that FINALLY opens fanboy's eyes to Xbox true intentions. No fanboy could possibly trust Xbox after this.

Congratulations to Solar Fry, you have proven that gullbility still exists and remind all of us that it is far easier to con somebody than to convince them that they have been conned.

Thanks man, work has been busy and I needed someone to put a smile on my face

"But if you're an Xbox customer," Spencer continued, "the thing I want you to know is this is about delivering great exclusive games for you that ship on platforms where Game Pass exists. And that's our goal, that's why we're doing this, that's the root of this partnership that we're building - and the creative capability we'll be able to bring to market for Xbox customers is going to be the best it's ever been for Xbox after we're done here."

- Phil Spencer, March 2021

Understand and respect that you think that, but...
The Microsoft CEO stated very recently (January 17) that they were excited by and happy with their position in the gaming space post ABK closure, and that Microsoft was 'doubling down' on video games just a couple of months ago (October 24).
two things. There is reality and the perception of reality.
You could say that's just spin, and I suppose it could be, but the fact of them investing $69bn (the largest investment in the history of gaming) AND making recent public declarations suggests not. It absolutely suggests they are all in to compete. I don't think anyone, even Microsoft would deny they wish they were in a better market share position right now, but what I'm struggling to understand is the certainty that they are withdrawing, and that 'it's over' based on nameless... I'm not sure you can even call them leaks tbh... versus the more rational conclusion that the unprecedented spending in this area from the one of the world's largest corporations is more indicative of a determination to throw money at the problem rather than pull their horns in.
look.

Reality:
I don't think anyone, even Microsoft would deny they wish they were in a better market share position right now

perception of reality:
I'm struggling to understand is the certainty that they are withdrawing, and that 'it's over' based on nameless... I'm not sure you can even call them leaks tbh.

this perception of reality is usually build by PR. The messaging. The fact that you choose to take that "Perception of reality" as a talking point gives you a hint of how bad MS lost control of its own PR/Messaging

because the reality is that these "insiders" are NOT saying MS is withdrawing from the console/gaming business. The only thing they are saying is that some games are going to be released on competing platforms; that is all.

If this was a debate about whether that is going to be good money after bad I'd think it had more validity, but this all just seems like either a fanboy nightmare or wet dream, depending on which color 'rat' you are.
This is interesting because when you take what these "insiders" have leaked and then you extrapolate with reality (MS not doing well in the console space and GP is not growing on console and PC)

The nightmares and/or wet dreams start to kick in. in other words, this perception of reality is based in the real possibility that's has been build over the years. (not from baseless assumptions)

. None of us know, but if you were playing the odds surely one is a safer bet than the other? And the inevitability of either a wet dream or a nightmare is ultimately that you wake up and realize it wasn't real after all.
as you said. We all can agree the even MS is not happy with the console performance in the market.

they need to make more money, how are they going to do that if they are not growing in consoles and subscription service?

What? They're are going to deal with these rumours head on otherwise there'd be no point to this. How deep they'll go with the information is the bigger question and they'll obviously hold stuff back but these rumours either need to be confirmed or corrected (I don't think it's as straightforward as we're going third party but it's certainly more than just making a few games multiplatform).

Agreed. This won't allow this shitstorm to fester any longer, they want to control the situation.
