Chris Dring: In Europe, Astro Bot has done better than basically every new 3D platform game in the last 10 years (Mario aside).

I did not try Yooka Laylee or Crash 4. Are they any good? The others were all pretty fun.

And sadly the only people who played it are posting in this thread. My oldest actually unlocked the last level. Sounded like he was feeling every death it took to do that too.
Crash 4 is awasome .. is hard as fuck to complete .. but is worth it. 100% this game is a masochist effort but you dont have to do it to have lots of fun.

It's good but don't kid yourself, it's no Mario... Not even close.
Well I love mario games .. to death.. astro bot is better than the latter mario games ... mario in general is better specially the older ones.. the new ones not so much.. but is a matter of opinion obviously... Im no graphics whore but the presentation makes a huge difference in this case.. switch its just too obsolete.

GAF and the NintendoBase Forum are very critical of Dring, especially since he infuriated a lot of Nintendo supporters with this comments about Super Mario Wonder Sales.

Funny thing is that, more than anything, he’s a Nintendo “Fanboy/Supporter”.
This. He's a Nintendo supporter mainly and yet I see him get called a Sony defender or Microsoft shill all the time.

Again, your opinion is as worthless as a pile of rusted screws considering you haven't played the game.
No need to be so upset man… it is just an opinion.

Relax ….

I think I am being more than fair by calling it a good game by the looks of it.

Remember Spiderman 2 last year. It has 92 metascore.

Now nobody remembers it.

I think AB will undergo same cycle.

Thats the nature of overhype.

The platforming responsiveness and Dualsense implementation shits on all the Mario games except Mario 64.
I agree. Mario 64 ushered in a new way to play platform games, and the N64 controller was a massive part of it. Since then, only Astrobot has added any meaningful uniqueness to a platformer, through the Dualsense. And, Astrobot innovated within the VR space too, so currently (in my mind) stands head and shoulders above any other platformer in recent memory.

It has irresistible charm, it feels amazing to play through the Dual Sense, has excellent graphics and performance is brilliant. It also invokes that feeling in me from when I used to play video games as a kid and I can see that on my kids faces when they play it too.

It's really great and a reminder of what I love about games.

Reverse groomer.
My takeaway from this is that all you need is a big publisher, good advertising and good timing to make 3D platformers shine in the AAA space again. A Lot more people would have bought games like Hat in Time and Lucky's Tale if they were simply more aware of them.

Now Sony, get to building that brand recognition so you can start outselling every 3D Platformer including Mario

You need to play the games again. Here are a couple of videos for R&C 2016 and A Rift Apart. There is plenty of platforming here.

Platforming was awkward in those games. And Rift has barely any plateforming. Besides those games are shooters more than anything. But still the fact that Astro Bot is selling better than Rift is impressive.

a massive success

35000 copies (official numbers) sold and now it's a "massive success" comparable to Genshin Impact or Palworld. I understand the desperation for a W after Concord, Horizon remastered and the 800 dollaridoos paperweight but this is getting embarassing.

You really shouldn't skip your medications. Compare it to CoD or GTA because hell why not.

Astro is a game that was made in Japan (so budgeting was done in Yen), by the team of 60+ people on a 3-year deadline. Even if it sold modestly (and it sold well north of 1 or 2 millions at this point) it still made enough money for Sony.

Not in sales, no. Whether it is a better game is a matter of opinion.
It’s not close to Mario at the moment, but there’s no reason why it couldn’t try to equal Nintendo.

AB is much closer to Ratchet and Clank than Mario. It’s an incredible third person platform adventure game. But there’s zero depth to the actual core mechanic - jumping. And, that’s why the challenge is not really there; without an array of jumping moves, they can’t design the levels to allow for mastery of the toolset. No double jump, ground pound, wall jump, reverse jump etc.

So the challenge levels end up being like Crash - more rhythm based. Mario, in contrast, has Champions Road. The jumping mechanics allow for the level design.

You can speak more technically about the platforming aspects of the games than I can. All I know is I haven't been able to finish the last couple of Mario games (odyssey and Wonder) I've played, but not because it was too challenging. Just couldn't muster the interest to keep playing. Maybe it is the lack of nostalgia as I wasn't an early Nintendo fan like many are. Not sure. I enjoyed Astro Bot a lot more. Just preferences I guess.

I can certainly see people enjoying AB more than Mario. It’s incredibly polished and enormous fun.

The thing about Mario is that the first eight worlds tend to act as a tutorial for the post game levels. It’s actually a very difficult game on occasion.

His take about Mario wonder sales certainly deserved to be ridiculed lol.

A game selling over 14 million units at full price in just a few months is certainly a heavy hitter.

I know, and he doesn't hide his preferences, he's very clear about it, still people call him Sony or MS shill.

I still think he was trying to imply that the Switch would see decline in HW sales for Q3 2023 compared to Q2 2022.

Sometimes his choice of words is not the best tho.

That's fairly typical when someone in his position says something people don't want to hear.

If he is a fan of gaming then he can have his own personal preferences and still report sales data objectively. Personally, only time I've ever had an issue with Dring is when he wagged his finger at folks celebrating Concord's shitty performance. I replied to him and said people voted with their wallets.

For sure he's a BIG fan of Gaming, but I have to admit that his personal opinions could be a little bit more "professional" sometimes.

I think AB will undergo same cycle.

Thats the nature of overhype.
I dunno, every time the game goes on sale for $49.99/€49.99 it sells very good.

The same will happen with AB, but we'll see.

That's a silly take. Who here forgot Spiderman 2? Anyone who played it remembers it. What you mean to say is that no one talks about the game much anymore, but that is the case regardless of hype, even for games that were once GOTY.

Look at who you’re talking to. He went after Spider-Man from Day 1 and now pivots to “overhype” because it is less talked about being, you know, a year old at this point. This while it continues to sell good after a huge opening and top tier critical acclaim. Waste of energy to debate with that.

Astro Bot tech demo remains the best thing I played on my ps5. I’ll probably pick up the new one on black friday if it’s sub $40.

I still don't understand why you think hype is a bad thing.

Sony got people hyped for Spiderman 2, then they released it to great critical and commercial acclaim and it continues to sell well now. It's clearly not forgotten.

So where's the downside?

Yeah, I mean, "nobody talks" anymore about games like Ragnarok, but they're still selling very good, and I think that's the best metric to Sony.

And yeah, I think some users just cherry-pick whatever is best for their narrative.

Because it's a single player game? Everyone finished it. Look at wukong right now on steam.

You can have all the gfx you want, HD etc but the creativity, the world building, the mechanics, the semi-open world nature of them, imo, puts even the newer Mario's leagues ahead of Astro.

Astro is a fancy looking Gex with it's contained linear levels.

Be use we all choose our enjoyment based on sales.

Even then, and I'm not saying you're wrong, but did Mario Oddessey really sell less than Astro? Surprising if true.

That's fair although it's still quite good. Maybe it's a tad too easy outside of the Challenge Levels.
Things can be easy and still magnificent.

Fun isnt determined by challange, although... Have you collected every Moon or Star? I'll hazard a bet that most people just collected the easier items and then comment on the games difficulty.

The only thing leagues ahead is your ignorance. Absolutely mind-boggling.

The day Nintendo makes something like Astrobot Rescue Mission VR, they will invent videogames again, 20 years after Astrobot, that is.

I'm not equating anything, I'm saying the only concrete information for Astrobot sales we have is a pathetic 35000 copies sold in its home market, and then this sort of vague non-info.
Japan hasn't been a factor in gaming sales for like 10 years now, unless it's a f2p waifu game.

Well you need to put old games in the context of their time in my opinion.
Every game becomes an overrated relic with the passage of time.
I completely agree with you, my post was replying to someone saying that Astro is better than all Mario games except Mario 64 which didn't make sense to me (that he rated M64 higher than later Mario games)

Depends on the game/platform. Japan is still pretty important and was the second biggest country for both PS4 and Switch (possibly it will be for PS5 too).

I'm sorry, if you think Astro is even in the same league as Mario Galaxy 1 or 2 then I can't help you....nobody can.

Sounds like you need a lot of help understanding that other people have different opinions than you

The idea that Astro is on the same level is not controversial. Its likely winning GOTY
