1/4th through the year. What have you played, how has it been?

All I've played is Zelda. Persona is up next for me as my frst real go with the series. I want to go back and play nioh and horizon.

I've played more than the past few years by this point in the year but I still buy way too much given my schedule for playing. My backlog is growing and there are too many 30+ hour games on it and that number doubles if we count 20+ hour games.

Luckily, I should have some time in the summer to play and after Prey there's really nothing I want until Destiny 2.

The games I've played that released this year are:

Yakuza 0
Fire Emblem Heroes
Tales of Berseria
Super Bomberman R
Nier: Automata

I've enjoyed everything, but nothing's made the impression that Nier has.

Once I finish Persona 5, I'll go back and play a bunch of the stuff that I've missed. I think I already have enough to keep me busy for the entire year.

Currently playing Breath of the Wild and I'm no where near completing it but I'm fine with that. I don't want it to end.

Nintendo, you have my full respect back.

Pssst Metroid Prime Trilogy HD Switch + Metroid Prime 4 Switch and I will be your bitch

I've played Horizon Zero Dawn, it's pretty good, Yakuza 0, it's pretty good, and Mass Effect Adromeda, it's pretty bad.

Haven't actually finished those yet, I'll get back to them after Persona 5.

Gravity Rush 2 has been a disappointment. I'm enjoying it way less than the first game. I'm fighting with the camera most of the game, collecting gems on buildings with balconies is Hell, the side quests are some of the worst most repetitive quests in a game I've played recently. The game is still charming and I like Kat but with the game being much longer, I'm thinking of stopping for awhile tbh. Combat isn't fun either.

Just focus on the story missions. I felt exactly the same, but enjoyed it a lot more when I decided to just focus on the story. I eventually did all the side missions by just chipping away at one or two here and there while I was waiting for Horizon and Zelda to come out. But they're mostly forgettable and some are truly terrible.

is responsible for the well-being of this island.
Not counting older stuff, here's the 2017 titles I played and finished along with scores because everyone loves those lately:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 9/10
Gravity Rush 2 - 9/10
Nier: Automata - 8/10
Splasher - 8/10
Horizon: Zero Dawn - 7/10
Resident Evil 7 - 7/10
Yakuza 0 - 6/10

So yeah Zelda and GR2 are my favorites so far, will end up in my GOTY list for sure. The rest were ok.

Excellent thus far.

REVII was an 8/10 for me and could have been higher but the last third of the game fell off for me. Same thing happened with The Evil Within and RE4 for me as well.

For Honor is an 8-8.5 as im only two campaigns through. Still have the Samurai campaign to play through. Hoping Ubisoft makes a sequel and goes all out for the single player campaigns but stays linear like it currently is.

Horizon: Zero Dawn was a 9.5/10 and 1B to The Witcher III being 1A this generation for me. Game is awesome from an overall package perspective. Horizon does what so many other open world games do but does it so much better. Only reason it's 1B instead of 1A is because the story, writing and characters in the side quests are better in The Witcher III than they are in Horizon but everything else is either equal or better.

Played Hitman, Sniper Elite 4 and Nier: Automata. After two chapters, Hitman and SE4 were done. Played Nier via GameFly as the demo hyped me up for it but coming off of 130 hours in Horizon which is easily better and fighting all those robot animals, I just lost interest in Nier. Next up will be a few backlogged games, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 and then Ghost Recon Wildlands.

Only games I've beaten so far are Zelda and Paper Mario 64. Both great games though I still prefer Skyward Sword and Super Paper Mario in their respective series.

Currently on the indie game Severed and it's really cool. I love how unconventional yet intuitive the controls are and the presentation is striking. Gotta check out Guacamelee one of these days. I mean I was already gonna, but I'm more excited to now.

So far Zelda, NieR: Automata, Nioh and soon Persona 5. NieR: Automata is easily the best game I've played in years. Zelda is OK but I'm halfway through and don't really care to play anymore - trading it in tomorrow while it still has some value. Nioh is good but I have little interest in the NG+ stuff. So far for me NieR is a 10, Zelda is a solid 7 and Nioh is probably a 7, too.

Yakuza 0 and I have had a very long and amorous relationship. That game is like heaven, it is so deep and all of the gameplay feeds into itself and the plot in a meaningful way. Great game.

Gravity Rush 2 and I, in comparison, are more like friends with benefits. It is okay when the camera lets you do the things you wanna do and the framerate is pretty solid, but the game is ultimately not the person I wanna take home for as long a period of time as the game lasts (seriously, this game is so long compared to the remaster of the first).

Zelda BTOW is pretty decent. I tend to prefer a more linear experience to an open world because the gameplay feels more tailored and handcrafted rather than emergent. I understand the love for it though. I guess I'm just sick of open-world game design. That and weapon breaking really make the game less sweet and more bitter.

Rain World is pretty alright. It is hard as fucking nails and I can honestly say that some of the deaths I have suffered weren't my fault which is frustrating as all hell in a game.

Hollow Knight is fucking amazing. So worth a buy, probably my favorite Metroidvania/atmosphere of a From game ever. It is just so so good and so so content rich. And all for 15 bucks. Seriously. Play this game.

The Yooka-Laylee Toybox demo had me super hyped for the release, so that was nice.

I also beat Shovel Knight and am working my way through Plague of Shadows. The game plays like a dream on Vita, I can't imagine sitting down at a home console with it.

My hype for P5 is so fucking real. It is tangible. I am holding it.

Have played and finished:

Hitman: Thought it was overrated
Nioh: Loved, current GOTY
Vanquish: Adore this game. A TPS masterpiece.
Sniper Elite 4: Good but not great. Campaign was too short imo.
Horizon Zero Dawn: A bit disappointed by the gameplay but the graphics and story made up for it. Definitely a solid and well polished game.
NieR: Automata: Saw the T
rue ending
. A great game. Hope it gets what it deserves for being a beautiful piece of art. 9S' voice actor may have put in my favourite ever VA performance, he's that good.

2017 has been a blast so far and I feel fortunate to have played everything I've been interested in. Really looking forward to playing Strafe, Persona 5, WipEout Omega Collection and Tekken 7 in Q2. If those games live up to how good I want them to be, Q2 could easily be better than Q1 for me. Exciting times!

Mostly been (re)playing older stuff, but got a Switch which is going to be my portable indie box.

So far I've been playing Fast RMX and World of Goo and enjoying both. Next up will be Graceful Explosion Machine.

I was playing Yakuza 0, FFXV, and Breath of the Wild all quite a lot and I thoroughly enjoyed each of them. I also watched the wife play a good bit of Horizon Zero Dawn and that seems great. I played Nier Automata for a bit but it didn't grab me; Ill try again after Horizon Zero Dawn.

Played through Dark Souls again over the holidays and now I'm just working through my backlog before buying anything new. Finished FFXV and just started Until Dawn. Tales from the Borderlands is up next then I will buy either Nioh or Horizon.

Crazy good first quarter. Only really played RE7, Horizon, and Zelda. Just started Shovel Knight, got most of it done on my brother's wii u but never beat it and never played the dlc. Still as great as before.

Sadly Don't have time for others. I bought all the kh games on ps4 and im only 1/3 through Horizon, and destiny, ffxv, and dark souls pulled me back in recently.

I wish I had the time or money for things like Nioh, Nier 2, and Yakuza 0 but i'll be too deep into what I have currently then MK8D, Spla2n, and ARMS. Theres just too many games this year!

One of the stronger starts to a gaming year I can remember. I'm always catching up with games from a year or two back, but this is the first time in a while where I've put my backlog on hold in order to jump into brand new releases. I'm currently playing (and loving) BotW, and I hope to soon be diving into Horizon and Nier Automata, not to mention the flurry of smaller great games that have already been released in 2017.

Pretty damn great so far. Played and finished:

RE7: Good stuff, had a lot of fun with it and has a perfect length. Lost steam when you got out of the mansion, but overall a great reboot.

Gravity Rush 2: Fun times, but the game overstays its welcome. It does manage to make up for it with an epic final stretch, but it could have been 40% shorter and be a better game. That said, I did appreciate the many environments and twists in the story, so it did actually have enough varied content. It just got a bit boring after so many hours.

NieR: Automata: fantastically unique game. Lame sidequests and kind of a boring world to traverse, but the music, characters and story made up for that. Crazy stuff.

Zelda: BotW: one of the best games I've played in many years and shoe-in for this year's goty. Not perfect, but on another level compared to other games.

Horizon Zero Dawn: okay game. Very pretty but fairly bland and homogenous in most regards. Nothing I haven't seen before, but I liked the story even if it was told with every cliché in the book.

Yazkuza 0: Great game, intense story, cool fighting system that managed to hold my interest for the entire game. No realy issues with this one, good stuff.

Played but not finished:

Nioh: the mission-based gameplay and copy/paste environements do it no favors, but it's a good souls clone. I might return to it eventually. I liked what I played, but it's not even close to any Sols game, not even DSII imo.

Persona 5: just started playing it so can't really comment on it. Good first impressions from the first 3 hours or so, if very similar to Persona 4 so far, but with a lot of added visual pizzaz.

Blaster Master Zero: pretty good, but they added so many overly helpful things that the game becomes a cakewalk, but it's good overall. Good soundtrack, tight controls and enough to set it apart fro the original.

Then there's a bunch of retro games, but I'll just stick to the games actually released this year.

12 months in a year. 3 months into the year. That would be 3/12 or 1/4.

Yes, which was my point - in sales terms we have

1st qtr
2nd qtr
3rd qtr
4th qtr

1st 1/2
2nd 1/2

1/4th through the year makes no sense

Unless we are now referring to all qtrs as ths

1/4th
2/4th
3/4th
4/4th

.?

Back onto the topic, it's been a mind blowing year for games, still stuck in Zelda and Persona 5 turned up in the post yesterday!

I've played BOTW, Horizon, Nioh, Night in the Woods, and Nier. And I'd be surprised if they all didn't end up in my top 10 for the year.

There's been a lot of really great titles, two of which - Ni-oh and Nier - I haven't even got around to buying yet.

Beaten this year:

Jazzpunk Director's Cut
Horizon: Zero Dawn (platinum - this game owned my existence for a couple of weeks)
Resident Evil 7
Xcom 2
Yakuza 0

In prog:

Zelda BOTW (playing through with young son, so will be ongoing for a while yet)

Next on the agenda - 100+ hours of sweet Persona goodness.

sticking with 2017 releases:

Horizon - pretty much Far Cry X with RPG trappings and upped production values. but this is in no way a bad thing. combat is fun and intuitive, writing and story while nothing mindblowing is a lot better than typical AAA fare, 'open world' that's not too huge for its own good. about three quarters into the game so my final verdict is contingent on how things play out, but one of the few big budget games lately that hasn't made me go "it was ... okay. i guess" amidst all the hype

Tales of Berseria - been out of the jrpg loop for awhile, wanted to sink my teeth into something narrative driven an somewhat "relaxing"... really tried to stick with this one. i liked it tried to circumvent certain anime tropes and if it was based on story alone i'd have kept at it. but the battle system just didn't do it for me, the dungeons were pretty terrible. really wanted to get into this but i just couldn't justify putting any more time into it

next up... yakuza 0 and nier

All Overwatch for the first couple months. Bought Nioh, could tell it was a good game, but it wasn't near as good as Bloodborne and I didn't really get into it, it's in the backlog for now.

Horizon was the first game that pulled me away from Overwatch since it came out. I played and beat it and thought it was fantastic.

That Zelda metascore and hype just kept catching my eye though... said fuck it, got a Switch. Zelda is absolutely incredible, still playing through it. But it's already GOTY for me so far. But I also became a huge fan of the Switch hardware and am now really excited for its future (still only have the one game though).

I'm dipping my foot back into the Overwatch waters a bit recently. While still playing Zelda. And I need to get Persona 5 on Tuesday. No clue how I'll balance everything. But I guess I'll just play what I feel like. If Persona doesn't pull me away from Zelda then fine I'll put it on the back burner, or vice versa.

Amazing year so far, hope I can catch up on some other stuff this Summer.

All of my time this year has gone into playing Resident Evil 7 (finished), Yakuza 0 (finished) and Zelda (70 hours in). All 3 are excellent games.

Once I wrap up my Zelda playthrough I'll have to choose between Nioh, Automata, Gravity Rush 2, Persona 5, Yooka, PaRappa...

2017 is too strong.

Played Nioh, which is very good, and Breath of the Wild, which is probably the greatest game I've ever played since I started playing games 30 years ago.

Looking forward to playing Nier Automata further down the line. That and Hollow Knight.

I had been playing Yakuza and Dishonored 2 but I haven't played anything else since Zelda came out. (Well, except for Civ VI and Divinity)

Nioh 8/10 - Great, but unlike Souls games, I couldn't get into the NG+/Hard mode, so stopped after I beat it.
Yakuza 0 8/10 - Love it, still need to finish it but keep getting distracted, story is great, might go up to 9 if they stick the landing.
Horizon Zero Dawn 9/10 - Amazing game, loved the characters and the gameplay, some small problems that I hope they fix in the future. Upgraded from 8 simply because it's the only game where I went back to find and listen/read all logs. Sequel has so much promise.
Nier Automata 9/10- If not for some performance issues on PS4, I'd say it's almost perfect. My GOTY so far.
Mass Effect Andromeda 7/10 - I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, the animations/writing can be jarring at times, but I managed to look past those..

2 days until Persona 5..Hoping to finish off Yakuza 0 before then.

I bought For Honor at launch and played that for a bit then I got Horizon and platinumed that. Now I'm getting back to For Honor a little but.

Absolutely loved Horizon. Will be very surprised if it's not my game of the year.

Really busy year so far. Here's everything I've played released in 2017.

Gravity Rush 2 was pretty cool sequel to already great first game. Unfortunately it still didn't have a great combat and the story felt really rushed in the end. 8/10

Yakuza 0 was my first Yakuza game and there was lot to like. All that whackiness and over the top stuff was really fun and the story was pretty interesting. The combat was ok but got repetitive in the long run. Also I didn't love all the mini games even though most of them were pretty decent. 8/10

Hollow Knight is definitely my favourite game released in 2017. At times it was as good as the best games in the genre but in the end it was maybe a bit too massive for its own good. Still a really charming and memorable experience that shows how great indie games have become. 9/10

Horizon: Zero Dawn surprised me how polished it felt. The world looked fantastic and roaming around was surprisingly fun. Everything else from music to story was pretty decent too so I had a really good time with this one. Nothing beats destroying robot dinosaurs with their own guns. 9/10

TLoZ: Breath of the Wild is a good game but it's not for me. It's actually my least favourite 3D Zelda entry. It just didn't feel rewarding to explore when the reward was always the same. The story had pacing problems and felt rushed at times. You can do some absolutely amazing stuff while exploring the world but I hoped for more. 7.5/10

Nier: Automata was another very memorable experience. As a game it's not as satisfying to play as Devil May Cry 3 or Bayonetta 2 because of the horrible difficulty curve (normal way too easy and hard is too punishing). On the other hand the world, the characters, the music and story are all really solid. But gameplay comes always first and while it was pretty good I feel like it could have been better with some slight modifications. 8.5/10

All in all I have been happy. Nothing has been quite as good as say Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Undertale or Bloodborne but every game have been enjoyable. I'd think that Hollow Knight, Horizon and Nier will make by top 10 of 2017. Other games I still haven't played or haven't been released that I think will be on that list are Persona 5, Prey, Cuphead, Gran Turismo Sport, Ni no kuni 2, Nioh and Super Mario Odyssey.

Fantastic year so far.

New games played:
Zelda NS
FAST rmx NS

Older games played:
Bioshock PS4
Devil May Cry 4 PS4
Resogun
Bayonetta WiiU
Bloodborne (barely played it - not for me unfortunately)

BotW is actually the first open world game and Zelda game that I've really got into ever. Great game. I'm not normally into open world games at all, but I may look into either Persona or Nier Automata when I'm done with Zelda (in 2-3 months I guess 😬). I don't have the time or patience to play any more of the recently released open world games. I'm kinda interested in RE7 however, but I fear it's gonna be too intense for me, so I'll probably rebuy RE4 for the second time instead.

Games I'm definitely buying soon are the Crash Bandicoot and WipEout collections, as well as Mario Kart 8DX and Splatoon 2.

It's been mixed, to put it lightly.

Dropped: Gravity Rush 2, Horizon and Nier. Open-world fatigue is real.

Completed: Yakuza 0 and Nioh. Y0 I felt franchise fatigue, Nioh didn't live up to my expectations.

But now with Persona 5 and Snake Pass things are looking up. Really loving both.

Final Fantasy XIV, Freedom Planet, Hollow Knight. Hollow Knight is nice but I haven't picked it up again after playing it for a few hours.

Horizon Zero Dawn - GOTY Contender #3
Nier Automata - GOTY Contender #4

Digimon World Next Order - 7/10
Mass Effect Andromeda - 8.5/10
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - TBC
Persona 5 - TBC

Haven't played any 2017 games yet. Definitely will soon though - Nier Automata and Zelda: Breath of the Wild are on my radar, as is possibly Resident Evil 7.

Games I've played for the first time this year:

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim - fun, but definitely a step down from its sequels, Oath in Felghana and Origin (which I am a massive fan of). Bosses are more simplistic, the leveling system isn't as well-balanced (constantly found myself too underleveled to fight or too overleveled to have fun), and your moveset is more limited due to the multiple swords (which also necessitate grinding for ore). Still a solid action-adventure game but doesn't reach the heights of its sequels.

Bleed 2 - Sequel to an (also great) twin-stick shooter / platformer hybrid. Massively improved aesthetically over its predecessor, and its shift in focus to a boss rush-style game over one focusing on stages with enemies is an improvement. Arcade mode makes the game.

Fire Emblem: Binding Blade - One of the better entries in the series, from what I've played. Executes on the series' formula very well, and features some pretty fantastically devious map design (even if some are a bit spacious), but sometimes feels a bit iterative, not really adding much of note to the series formula aside from support conversations (and the game definitely feels like a step down from the amazing Thracia 776).

Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword - Its smaller maps and very well-balanced character lineup are appreciated coming from Binding Blade, but the difficulty is a massive step down, and the forced four-hour tutorial is laborious and excessive. Unfortunately there's no way to unlock the game's hardest mode without two full playthroughs on normal, which is also frustrating. Regardless, due to this game's mechanical refinements (largely carried over from its direct predecessor and Thracia 776), it's still an upper-tier Fire Emblem, but I like FE6 more.

Doom (2016) - More modern shooter than classic Doom, but still fantastic. Great enemy design and some pretty solid bosses, but the leveling system makes the player a little too powerful by the end, weapons aren't particularly well-balanced, ammo conservation's role is too diminished for me (I like the chainsaw, though) and I think checkpoints are a little too frequent to make battles as tense as they are in the very best FPS games. The campaign sort of runs out of steam by the end too, and fails to escalate to match the player. This game definitely does have some of the coolest individual fights I've gone through in a FPS but there are a lot of elements that drag the game out of my favorite FPS list. Maybe arcade mode will change my mind once I dig more into it.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin - Not finished. I beat the original release of DS2 once a few years ago and am only now giving Scholar a shot. The original game isn't fresh enough in my mind for me to weigh the games' differing enemy placement against each other meaningfully, but my complaints against the original game still hold true - DS2 is overall a solid sequel to the amazing Dark Souls, but the introduction of lifegems (and the heavy nerfing of estus at the beginning of the game) and adaptability, as well as the game's poorer visual design and lineup of bosses put DS1 ahead. Hoping the DLC areas (which I've never played before) improve my opinion of the game.

Hitman 2 - Not finished. Enjoying what I've played (about seven or so missions in) - the levels, if occasionally simplistic, are fun to puzzle out.

Let's see, I actually finished messing with FF XV in 2017, though I'd finished the campaign before the New Year. I enjoyed a lot of things about it, but damn they need to work on narrative delivery. The writing was surprisingly good line by line, I enjoyed combat, the world and monsters were cool, great music, interesting story arc, but the whole thing was so weirdly disjointed. Take another look at Witcher Three and go back to the story board SE!

Then played and beat The Last Guardian which, after loving SotC, was a big disappointment. Trico was great, but the controls of the boy were abysmal and the entire game felt almost unbearably claustrophobic.

Messed with Berseria, but just couldn't get into it. I think I'm done with Tales -- too formulaic and everything is too drawn out. Post Vesperia they just seem to keep reskinning the same mediocre game.

Played more DQ Builders, though didn't finish campaign. This game is great fun.

Now almost done with Nier Automata. Fantastic game, and excellent sequel to one of my favorites last gen. For all his quirks, Taro gets narrative pacing and delivery, and there's a lot of heart beneath the ugliness of his worlds. Platinum made it control like a dream too.

Next up: P5, probably going to take me 2-4 months to finish, but looking forward to every minute.

Hopefully a break in must plays after that. I'd like to go back and try Gravity Rush 2 and Yakuza 0, also play some FF XV DLC. Might go back for Horizon, though robo dinos aren't my thing. Decided to pass on ME:A, despite enjoying the original trilogy. Modern BW's writing is just too spotty for me to get into their stories and characters.

After that looking forward to Ni No Kuni 2 and DQ 11, and, gods willing, the VIIR hype train.

Maybe a Switch for Christmas? I'd like to try Zelda, but need a few more games up my alley on the console...
