10 reasons why you should play this Roguelike (Tales of Maj'Eyal Edition)

Highly recommended for fans of the genre who want something different but still familiar, and those interested in roguelikes but put off by the genre's traditionally awful UI and complete refusal to tell you anything.

That doesnt mean the game is easy and without depth though. I stand by my comment that its pretty much THE best pure roguelike package in a single game. Everyone should try this game if they just want to dip their toes into the genre water, or if they are looking for a good roguelike to satisfied their roguelike craving.

Oh and speaking of content, the achievements in this game work like milestones and difficult tasks you can achieve. After 50 hours, I have 2% of the achievements I think. There is a LOT to do here.

Certainly not. I was more than a little surprised to find that the game's single traditional wizard class (out of thirty-odd character classes) encompassed a good half dozen elemental archetypes in its talents, for example.

For action rogue-like try Vangate. It's in alpha but free. Wow so good. Game focuses on combat and platforming which requires patience and skills. Good loot system as well. Has local co-op as well. I think up to 4.

Make sure to play with a controller.

I'd just like to say how immensely amused I am that it is a totally legit strategy to throw on the heaviest magical shielding I can, blink into the middle of an enormous pack of monsters, and unleash a colossal room-clearing fireball at point blank range. Eats a hell of a lot of mana, but nothing's left standing that isn't fire immune or a boss.

Not really. And yes, listen to the OP :p

Just grab the free version off the dev's website to start. Paying for the game doesn't unlock too much, outside of being required to buy DLC.

I have been playing through this game for the past two weeks, and I’ve warmed up to it quite a bit. As recommended, the auto-explore ability removes any tedium that I would otherwise experience when restarting, particularly in the earlier areas that I’ve frequented. There really is quite a large amount of customization in skill-sets, and I’ve played through the knight alone for the past four deaths. I’m sure I’ll expand to other characters in time, though I’m in no rush to complete any particular aspect of this game. I sometimes have a bit of trouble following the progression of events with more powerful creatures, but I think that’s more be becoming accustomed to the many skills enemies have. Thanks much for the recommendation! Bravely Default and Banner Saga are both going to have to wait awhile longer as I keep finding myself drawn to this.

This game is currently on a $1 sale on Steam. As written in the OP, I highly recommend picking it up.

I support this message

*BUY THIS GAME* It's awesome, I promise =).

*already gifted it to all my friends*

Yeah, I'll throw it to some more friends now as well. The thread wont get as much attention during E3 flooding anyway :p

Signed on -- I highly recommend this game. I'm fairly well versed in roguelikes (have ascended in Nethack w/o scumsaving), and this is top tier.

Very easy to get into, a great sense of character 'progression', and a huge range of potential characters to play [from lone warrior to magic user with a hoard of minions].

Get it! It's a fairly easy entry into the genre, overall.

Bought the game and expansion. The last Roguelike such as this one that I played was called ADOM I think, which was fun but annoying in that you were constantly getting corruption on your character that would eventually end up killing you. Time limits suck.

Played for about an hour earlier (thanks Toma!), did the tutorial and then started a new game with an archer. I found the game to be surprisingly immersive, despite its graphics, the music in particular is pretty great. Doesn't seem too hard to get the swing of things either, the basic mechanics are fairly straightforward and clear, can see myself putting a lot of time into this.

Once you did a few starting runs and got the hang of it, make sure you use the Y/Z button for auto explore and right clicking on skills to set automatic base skill behaviour. You can cut down a lot of tedium that way.

Oooh, automatic skill usage is really nice, didn't expect that. Just got killed after entering some kind of slaver hideout, had some nasty casters, will probably roll a Barbarian next.

The way they set up the convenience options makes it so effing easy to just start again. Most roguelikes are a bit draining after 2-3 runs, but I spent a few days just retrying constantly because you can be so quick about it, like a quick fire sequence of rewarding successes, instead of the usual typically slow roguelike build up.

looks like this is $1.39 on steam right now. does that include the dlc? (not that im balking at the price). just trying to figure out if this is worth buying on steam, or i i should just go with the free version.

does the money for the steam version go to the people actually actively developing the game?

never have played ToME. missed this topic when it was originally posted.

The DLC is not included in the base price, but the dev should get the standard cut, which is 75% or so? Not sure what the cut is on Steam. The free version is massive in itself, but I bought it anyway for some online features and to support the devs. (Actually, I bought it like 15 times to gift it around :p)

I'll add another argument to my OP list:
The dev is just awesome, haha. If you buy the game, you can opt in to play "connected" online. If you do, the dev might throw a random event into the game that all online players can participate in. Today he added 2 events and ... this (that only players/characters received that were online at the time):

I've never tried this game. I really love RPGs, but it just seemed hard to get into to - I don't have so much time for games at the moment... But this thread definitely made me want to give it try. So thanks for the easy-to-understand information :)

Thanks for this, love roguelikes and haven't tried this one yet. From the looks of it I'm going to love it for years to come. Yay!

These games have a such long longevity and since TOME has so many classes amd races that are a lot of combinations and experimation, plus it has very supportative developers as pointed by Toma in his previous posts.

I had my best run ever that went for... 7 hours or so (Level 30) and managed to unlock 8 new achievements. Just to reiterate the "for years to come part":

On vacation so had to download a roguelike on my phone to scratch that itch. Really looking forward to this, love the fact it has an active community and support.

I played two games of this so far, it's really fun and easy to get into. Started with a Berserker, which was faceroll easy until I got buried under sand and died. Then started my unlocked Archmage and got my ass kicked immediately in the first quest.

Totally gotta keep playing this.

Good thread bump:p
Still sticking to my opinion, it is the best roguelike in terms of overall package. (graphics, depth, accessibility, content, variety, level of challenge, comfort features etc)

I started playing the free version recently, but bought it during the GOG sale with my store credit since I liked it so much. It's great so far.

I thought my third character would have been able to win the game but since I thought I was really strong I decided to awaken a certain golem. That was not very smart.

What I thought this recent bump would've been on as far as details finally clarified a bit:

http://te4.org/blogs/darkgod/2015/12/news/announcing-embers-rage

My minions, I have teased it, I have talked about it, but I never actually officially announced it!

One year has passed since the one they call the Scourge from the West came and single-handedly destroyed most of the Orc Prides. The Sunwall, now possessing a Farportal, have entered an economic and millitary pact with the Allied Kingdoms in the west and conquered most of Var'Eyal. The few remnants of the Prides are caged. But by chance the Scourge missed the Kruk Pride, which now stands as the only orc settlement left. Isolated on an island they too however face impending doom. Besieged by the Sunwall they are barred from entering the mainland and on their own island they are at war with a technologically advanced civilization of giants. Their only hope is to reverse-engineer their steam-powered technology and bring metal mayhem to all the foes of the Pride.

Embers of Rage is the second expansion for Tales of Maj'Eyal. The concept and start of the development is now about three years old but in the last year it has picked up pace a lot, and now I am happy to say the release is getting close!

But what does it bring exactly?

A new story to play through, set in the Far East continent (that the orcs call Var'Eyal) which continues the story of the world.
A full length campaign that will see your characters fight from level 1 to 50
Play as an Orc and reclaim your land and future
Unlock another -secret- race
Play as a Sawbutcher, a melee battle-engineer that uses both his cunning for technology and his trusty steamsaws to bring hot steamy metal mayhem to his foes
Play as a Gunslinger, a steamgun dual wielding master-sharpshooter capable of amazing feats of pure steamy badassness
Unlock other -secret- classes
Unlock the possibility to play the new classes in the vanilla campaign, because why not!
Use the tinker system to craft some technological wonders to attach to your objects to become more versatile. Need more mobility? use Rocket Boots. Want to fire ammo without a launcher? attach a Hand Cannon to your gloves!
Save yourself with versatile medical salves; inflexible runes and infusions are so old-school!
Choose from six new prodigies, available even in the vanilla game
Unearth long lost mysteries of the past and discover sinister plots in some thrilling new lore to discover
And obviously discover a huge number of new zones, artifacts, creatures, achievements, talents, ... It is after all a full campaign!
All while listening to custom made musics for each zones

Now my minions, you simply need to wait patiently in line while your local God of Darkness prepares to unleash the Embers of Rage upon you!

Oh, I do love ToME. I did my first RL win not too long ago.
Been looking forward to the Orc campaign for ages!

I love ToME and have put hundreds of hours into it, pre-Steam and post. I agree that it is likely the best roguelike out there overall. I will admit to binging recently on Dungeonmans, though. The persistent world mechanics in Dungeonmans add a lot to the replayability. I love the fact that you can avenge your previous character's death and get rewarded for it. I also enjoy building up the home castle which then provides bonuses to future playthroughs.

It is a good time to be a gamer. I am so glad roguelikes (and metroidvanias) exist!

good job with that OP, you succeeded in making me buy the game (+ it was on sale) and I'm enjoying it, it's quite good.

I knew it existed but it didn't strike me as something I'd have liked, clearly I was wrong. only playing on normal right now and it's much easier than I initially thought, my first 4 hours or so run is still going, although runs in general seem to require a lot more time to complete than pretty much any other roguelike I've played on steam (FTL, BoI etc.), considering how much you can do and explore. I'm enjoying arena mode too, almost reached wave 30.
the community seems still active judging from the in-game chats (probably due to the fact that a new expansion just released), which is great.

Thanks, easily one of the most time intensive OPs I ever wrote, though I just noticed I need to update the achievement picture from 1300 to 1600, haha.

Hmm... I should play this. I have it, but I haven't installed it. I'm just afraid if I do I'll fall back into old habits.

Man, I have spent so much time on ToME 2. Like thousands of hours. I played it for many years pretty full on. My username is in dedication to ToME 2 (Orfax was *always* a character I would possess). I created a mod for ToME (new class), and I learned LUA because of it. I see I'm still the highest ranked Human on Oook after nearly 12 years. lol. I still play ToME 2 occasionally now (along with Angband).

BTW fun fact 2 is slightly wrong. It was called Troubles of Middle Earth when it changed from Pernband.

This is what I found on the wiki:
Tales of Maj'Eyal, more commonly known as ToME or ToME4, is an open-source fantasy roguelike. Development first began in 1998 as PernAngband, a Pern-inspired Angband variant, then later became known as Tales of Middle Earth
